Overview
Oil and Gas Upstream industry is facing challenges on multiple fronts. Continuous growth in demand for oil and
gas and end of “the easy oil” era has pushed the organizations to go for previously unexplored and remote areas.
Remote operations coupled with extreme climates and harsh working conditions have made the high margins
and major oil discoveries elusive despite advancements in Exploration and Production (E&P) technologies.
Aging workforce and resultant skills shortage, strict environmental protection regulations and political
uncertainties in regions with ample hydrocarbons are other key issues the industry is grappling with.
These challenges have compelled the industry to find ways to significantly improve the performance of the
existing fields in terms of hydrocarbon recovery using innovative ideas, information technology and Geological
and Geophysical (G&G) technologies.
We have proven track record of delivering IT projects to leading E&P as well as Oil Field Services (OFS)
organizations for their operational excellence. E&P being highly data intensive sector, we give special emphasis
on E&P organizations' data and information management challenges.
Accurate, consistent and complete data is a crucial component of E&P organizations’ operational
efficiency. This data goes through several manipulations and processing before it could be analyzed by
domain experts. Maintaining data quality at each stage of the process requires a systematic approach to
data quality.
We have extensive experience in E&P organizations data quality management. We have in-house Center
of Excellence (CoE) for Data Quality Management (DQM) capability and foster Research and Development
(R&D) initiatives to provide industry best solutions for E&P organizations’ data quality problems.
Through the years of DQM practice, we have developed delivery accelerators – DQM reusable
components such as templates, tools, catalogues etc. that help us provide quick turnaround to E&P
organizations’ data quality needs.
The oil and gas industry is usually divided into three major sectors: upstream (or exploration
and production- E&P), midstream and downstream.[1][2] The upstream sector includes searching
for potential underground or underwater crude oil and natural gas fields, drilling exploratory wells,
and subsequently drilling and operating the wells that recover and bring the crude oil or raw
natural gas to the surface.[3]
Background Oil and natural gas exploration includes costs for geologists, surveys and certain drilling
activities. These costs are referred to in the oil and gas industry as G&G (geological and geophysical)
expenses. The function of G&G activities is to locate and identify properties with the potential to
produce commercial quantities of oil and natural gas. Before Congress simplified the law in 2005,
G&G costs associated with producing wells were allowed as tax deductions only after production
began and over a longer period of time. In 2005, Congress allowed all G&G costs to be deducted
over two years. Congress has twice extended the period, most recently in 2007 to seven years for
the largest integrated oil and natural gas producers.
At its core, data remediation is an activity that’s focused on cleansing, organizing and
migrating data so it’s fit for purpose or use. The process typically involves detecting and
correcting (or removing) corrupt or inaccurate records by replacing, modifying or deleting the
“dirty” data. It can be performed manually, with cleansing tools, as a batch process (script),
through data migration or a combination of these methods.
DRILLING AND WELL DATA MANAGEMENT
The ProSource E&P data management and delivery system provides a powerful and broad solution for
acquisition, management, and delivery of corporate data required by all disciplines across an E&P organization.
Petrel is a software platform used in the exploration and production sector of the petroleum
industry. It allows the user to interpret seismic data, perform well correlation, build reservoir
models, visualize reservoir simulation results, calculate volumes, produce maps and design
development strategies to maximize reservoir exploitation. Risk and uncertainty can be assessed
throughout the life of the reservoir. Petrel is developed and built by Schlumberger.
