EVALUATE THE BOOK USING THE FOLLOWING ELEMENTS
1. Explain how the ​cover and first pages​ of the book attract and hold the reader’s interest. Give 3
examples from the book

1. ​The cover of the book is aqzs real life picture of Martin, this allows for real life connections
for young children.
2.​The text is large which allows for easy text focus and reading for young children.
3. ​All text is followed by a picture which allows for text connection to illustration.
STYLE AND LANGUAGE – Explain how the book shares information with children. Examples: “little-known
facts;” new vocab sprinkled in the text; and selection of information to create/maintain reader’s interest.
Give 3 examples from the book
1. ​The text is simple which is great for beginning readers.
2.​The text provide some vocabulary extension through words not commonly used.
3.​The style the book is written in is a form of conversation as if the author is speaking to the
audience directly which I really liked.
ACCURACY – up-to-date research, references given, no mixing of fact and fiction.
Explain: ​The data used for the biography is accurate . There are no direct references given in the text. The text is
simple and appropriate for young children.

INFORMATION – Child’s interest, unusual subjects or viewpoints - personalized content – new perspectives,
first-person accounts, and fascinating comparisons. Give 3 examples from the book.
1.​One thing I found interesting was that the book wasn’t sugar-coated and real terms such as
racism, hate, kill, and shot are used in direct text.
2.​The book would be interesting to a child who enjoys history but it is still hard to have young
children understand a life prior to what they are now living.
3.​The unusual subject found in the book is the portion of King’s murder, it’s not depicted in
detail but it is mentioned in an age appropriate format
EVALUATE THE BOOK FOR ILLUSTRATION WITH THE FOLLOWING:

photographs for the book.
Visual elements​ ​(line, shapes, colors, textures):​ The visual elements are the photographs provided which
are mostly in grey and black and three in color.

photographs are used to connect the text. For example, when the book is talking about the
marches King will lead the photo that follows the text is of a march in Washington.
Describe the ​Page design: ​ use of borders, text placement and font size, information boxes, charts, vocab identified, use of white and
dark space, illustrations placement and types of illustrations:​ The page design is simple, it uses both left and
right page. The text and photographs correlate to one another. The photographs are for the
most part on the left page and leave no dark or white space. The text is on the right on a
white page leaving white space around and between the text.

1. ​Inthe stage of concrete operational children begin to understand two way thinkings. The
example from the book is how people from that time believed black people and whites
couldn’t go to school together or even play together.
2.​Martin Luther King Jr is a person who lived a long time along in the concrete stage children
begin to understand the concept of time therefore the timeline given in the book can be used
as a guide to read the book and understand the order of events.
3.​Since the book provides facts on the life of King it allows for concrete examples which
would help a children understand that a whole world existed prior to their existence.

Explain the rating: ​I really enjoyed this book as a biography for young children. The book text is
simple yet still provides a bit of a challenge using not so common vocabulary. The book is also
great for independent readers because the text is large making it easier to read.
