Deepa Malik in Auckland

D
r Deepa Malik is undoubtedly
one of the most inspirational
personalities today.
Paralysed below the chest since
her thirties, the 48-year-old is one of
India’s most celebrated para-athletes
and is a very visible and eloquently
vocal champion of not just physically
challenged sportspeople but also of
all differently abled persons in India
and beyond.
Her sports record is incredible:
the first Indian woman to win a medal in the
Paralympic Games, she has gone on to win
over 80 medals and awards in different forms
of sport in India and across the world, including
the prestigious Indian Arjuna Award. As well as
athletics, she has participated and won accolades
and awards in motorsport, participating in some
of the longest and toughest car rallies.
She was in New Zealand earlier this month
to receive the prestigious Sir Edmund Hillary
Fellowship. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern
bestowed the Fellowship on Dr Malik in
Wellington.
The India New Zealand Business Council
along with the Auckland Indian Association
and other Indian community organisations
organised Dr Malik’s talk at Auckland’s
Mahatma Gandhi Centre on May 10.
Dr Malik’s aim at pursuing and achieving
success at different sport in spite of her physical
circumstances is to spread awareness that
physically challenged individuals can attain
independence and self-reliance by applying
their minds at pushing themselves to achieve
more. She undertakes several programmes
across platforms to spread such awareness.
She is one of the most eloquent and engaging
speakers one could come across and held
her audience spellbound for the duration of
her address. She related her life story, the
seemingly insurmountable challenges her
illnesses heaped on her and how through sheer
grit, determination and unalloyed positivity, she
came up trumps over all of them.
She spoke in flawless English but threw in
Hindi phrases for good measure, connecting
extremely well with her audience, raising
a laugh here and lusty applause there. She
is clearly as good a communicator as she is
an athlete, advocate and an incredibly high-
achieving personality.
Dr Malik peppered her address with a series
of videos of her various activities in sporting,
her growing advocacy initiatives for which she
is being increasingly recognised and feted and
her social-entrepreneurial nous, with which
she is taking empowerment of physically
challenged people to the far corners of India
and even the world.
A brief question and answer session followed
her address and that of her young daughter
Devika, also physically challenged, who is
treading her mother’s path of advocacy armed
with academic qualifications appropriate to
her calling and a similar gift for excellent
communication.
Asked by a member of the audience if
Indian attitudes to disability had changed over
the years, Dr Malik said she was vary much a
product of that milieu and that system and her
achievements were proof that anything could
be achieved in India with the right attitude and
application.
Throughout her talk, she stood up for her
beloved motherland in the true patriotic spirit
of her family’s armed forces background (both
father and husband have been Indian Army
colonels) and underscored her pride in the all
round progress that India was making especially
in providing access, funding and facilities to the
cause of the physically challenged.
Dr Malik works tirelessly for the physically
challenged through a plethora of organisations
focusing on tourism, sport, education and other
fields of human endeavour.

community leaders addressed the gathering
before her address. Rizwan Mohammad was
the MC and the evening concluded with the
audience spending time chatting with Ms Malik
and Devika over tea and snacks hosted by the
Auckland Indian Association.

“Indians are dirty tenants”: I am calling

out mainstream media on reporting it
as a racist retort

spurning out this insulting-mud on

ecently, a story
appearing in the
mainstream media,
where three prospective Indian
tenants who were denied
tenancy of a property, were
reported to allege racism on
the part of the property owner
and their agent, has attracted
huge attention on social media.
The experience of the
three Kiwi-Indians in house-
hunting and the accompanying
disappointment, and in this
particular case against a
property owner and property
agent who were Asians, has
not only been reported but also amplified
by mainstream media, as a case of “alleged
racism.”
Immediately after reading this story on several
mainstream media outlets, a few questions
popped in my mind, and not necessarily in any
particular order – Why my editorial team did
not get this story or such stories? Obviously
– we as a leading media house for the Kiwi-
Indian community in New Zealand should be
able to reach or dig into such stories happening
in our communities before others do.
Then, soon after, another question popped in
my mind: what would we have done if we got
this particular story?

Rushed to our desks – made a few phone
calls – got few comments and write out a few
hurriedly collected facts in such a manner
that we create an impression that some grave
injustice has happened because some property
owner thinks “Indians are dirty”.
Absolutely rubbish!
We would not have done that at any cost, and
that is not our normal preference!
There are a number of reasons for that –
firstly, we absolutely reject the humiliating
suggestion even if smartly put into someone
else’s mouth that Indians are dirty.

In this case, more than the property owner

contempt that Indians are dirty.
The mainstream media in New Zealand
needs to be reminded that with great power
comes great responsibility, and it has to be used
judiciously and wisely.
You cannot play out one ethnic-minority
migrant community against the other, which is
Indians against Asians in this instance, and sit
back and see the drama and anxiety that unfolds
henceforth.
If mainstream media’s newsrooms are
thinking that they are doing any service to the
nation as the fourth pillar then they are being
delusional and guilty of misusing the immense
power bestowed on them for manning the
institution called as ‘media’ in any open liberal
society.
The mainstream media is guilty of spurning
out this insulting-mud on the Kiwi-Indian
community that they are dirty by any standard,
by amplifying a seemingly innocuous
conversation in the market.
Reading that story the other question that
intrigued me was – would a property owner
or their agent be so dumb, or naive, to be
so outrageous and offensive, in telling on
someone’s face that their entire race is filthy.
I personally doubt that, and for the simple
reason, that property investors are supposed to
be smart people who generally know how to
do business without attracting any unnecessary
disruption.
More so, in such instances where any
property agent or owner can easily deflect the
situation with a polite and courteous response
that the application of other prospective tenant
was stronger than yours and the owner has
selected someone else.
Having said this, I do not suggest being
in denial or being inattentive, of the severe
struggles that some prospective renters,
including in the Kiwi-Indian community, can
have in the course of their house hunting.

worked two years on a book dedicated
to the city calling it ‘Rotovegas of New
Zealand’.
Vishal Sharma, a former accountant at
Rotorua Daily Post and Radio Presenter at
Southland Radio, says his love for the city
swayed him to write this coffee table book
which has a propensity to draw tourism to
Rotorua.

Zealand was launched in a small ceremony
earlier this month in Rotorua.
Vishal started writing the book in 2016, but
his work got delayed due to his several trips to
India in 2017 but was finally completed earlier
this year.
The book is divided into several chapters
each focusing on different aspects of Rotorua
city such as lifestyle, Maori culture, story of
Hinemoa, hospitality, tourism, Tutanekia and
tips and hacks to go around the city.
Vishal considers Rotorua his home away
from his other home, hailing as he does from
Chandigarh in India.
Vishal has a background in media and
tourism and aimed to promote Rotorua globally
through his book.
Although the book has been designed and
printed in India, the writing style and the

of costs they cannot afford,” Mr Suchdev said
in an exclusive interview with The Indian
Weekender about his new idea that is quickly
beginning to take shape.
Some time ago he came across a woman in
unbearable pain because of a bad tooth, and
who had no money to pay for the recommended
extraction. Mr Suchdev called a dentist friend,
explained the situation and was able to arrange
for the extraction without cost, thanks to the
generosity of the dental practitioner.
He also has come across several instances
where people simply cannot afford to fix
defective plumbing or undertake simple repairs
in their homes that if not done could compromise
safety, all because of unaffordability.
“There are people in genuine need and there
are good people who want to genuinely help
with no expectation of monetary return. But
there is no platform to bring them together –
and that’s what we are working on.
“We want to create a platform that plays
matchmaker to the needy and the generous,”
Mr Suchdev said. “It’s a platform to pay it
forward.”
The ‘skill bank’ is in the process of enlisting
people and professionals who would like to
donate their skill, experience, talent and time
to anyone who is in dire need of services but
cannot genuinely afford them. Mr Suchdev
said, to the best of his knowledge, there is
no initiative that works in this space for the
community.
Mr Suchdev and Bhartiya Samaj haven’t
made a formal announcement of plans to
launch such a service. However, he has been
talking to people from all walks of life in his
wide network about the idea and is surprised at
the support that is forthcoming.
“We already have legal and medical
professionals, transport operators and
tradespeople who have expressed willingness
to donate part of their time to help the needy
and the list is growing,” he said.
How will the proposed service determine the
‘genuinely needy’ that approach it? The Indian
Weekender asked.
“There will be parameters drawn by a
competent panel of experts. There will also be
a process of assessment comparable with other
similar organisations engaged in delivering
social services. It’s at an early stage but we
are mindful of it and are working on it,” Mr
Suchdev said.
He is also mindful of other issues that may
arise in terms of legality and the quality of
service delivered. “Of course there are many
hurdles to tackle before a system and process is
put in place – but this is true of any new service
that is planned. You need to factor in as many
scenarios as possible.”
Mr Suchdev is hopeful of launching the
service by the end of this year. He first made
an announcement aboutthe proposed service
at a farewell dinner for outgoing Indian
High Commissioner Sanjiv Kohli. Mr Kohli
wholeheartedly endorsed the idea and it was
well received by those present.

the minimum income threshold for people
holding Essential Skills and Religious
Worker work visas.
In a press release shared on INZ website, it
is notified people holding Essential Skills and
Religious Worker work visas must earn at least
NZ$43,322.76 a year if they have dependent
children in New Zealand their children’s visas
are dependent on their parent’s work visa.
This is an increase from the current minimum
of NZ$42,944.20.
This minimum income threshold is not the
same as the skill-band remuneration rates for
Essential Skills work visas.

commits government and tech companies to

violent extremist content; countering the roots
of violent extremism; increasing transparency

direct users to violent extremist content.

Infratil to acquire Vodafone NZ for NZ$3.4 billion

for an enterprise value of NZ$3.4 billion
Vodafone NZ generated revenue of NZ$2.0
billion and Underlying EBITDA of NZ$463
million for the 12 months to 31 March 2019. The

6.9x – 7.4x and is expected to deliver strong
cash flow to support current and future growth

Completion is conditional on Overseas
Investment Office approvals and Commerce
Commission clearance. Infratil anticipates that
these conditions will be satisfied by August, and
completion will occur by 31 August 2019. The
conditions must be satisfied within eight months
of signing. Given the competitive nature of the
fixed broadband market, Infratil believes there is
a very strong basis for Commerce Commission
clearance to be granted. If Infratil cannot
obtain Commerce Commission clearance, the

divest its interest in the Vodafone transaction,
or failing that divest its stake in Trustpower
by the eight-month deadline. The Commerce
Commission clearance condition could also
be satisfied if Trustpower had sold its retail
business in the required time. Trustpower will

retail strategy.

Acquisition funding
The NZ$3.4 billion purchase price is to
be funded via a NZ$1,029 million equity
contribution from each of Infratil and
Brookfield, with the balance funded from
Vodafone NZ level debt and a portion of equity
reserved for the Vodafone NZ executive team.
Infratil's equity contribution is expected to be
funded via a fully underwritten equity raising
of up to NZ$400 million, with the remainder
to be funded through a combination of NZ$400
million of debt from a committed acquisition
debt facility and the use of existing debt facility
headroom.
A significant proportion of any equity raising
is expected to be directed towards existing
shareholders.

he Government’s lack of action when it
comes to getting drug-impaired drivers
off our roads really does beggar belief.
It’s not as if there hasn’t been enough heart-
breaking evidence for law reform staring it in
the face these past few years.
Stats show more drug-impaired drivers were
involved in fatal road crashes than alcohol-
impaired drivers in 2017 – the first time drugs
have overtaken alcohol in this statistic.
 But forget about numbers on a sheet of
paper; one death from drugged-driving is one
too many.
 Karen Dow knows this all too well. She’s
been petitioning the Government to introduce
roadside saliva testing ever since her son
Matthew was killed by a driver high on meth
on New Year’s Eve 2017.
 This past week we also learned one of the
drivers involved in a horror crash that killed
seven people in Waverley last year – the worst
road accident in a decade – had repeatedly
smoked synthetic cannabis before getting
behind the wheel.
 All of this really brought home the need for
urgent action in this area, particularly with the
Government pushing for more liberal drug laws
through its referendum on legalising cannabis,
and passing through Parliament legislation that
effectively decriminalises the possession of all
classes of drugs.
 Which is why it was so staggering to
learn that government ministers received a

MPs in October 2018. We tried again to get the
Bill introduced last week but it was blocked by

Nick Smith being suspended from Parliament.

before any of the Government’s law changes

with grandeur and

glory on various days with different
age-groups at different events over one
week period earlier this month.
The first event was held during the
weekly English speaking class on
Thursday, May 9, where the senior
citizens were surprised with a Mother’s
Day cake. This surprise celebration
delighted the seniors, and they recalled
their memories being their mother.

occasion of Mother’s Day,
a host of performances

years from the ‘Chottey Sikkey’ dance
group performed a scintillating dance

enthusiasm and joy.

On Sunday, May 12 saw declarations
of love from the Bal Vikas children’s
group when they welcomed to their

surprised their mothers by presenting
them with personalised e-cards also
made by them as part of the computer
class skills.

140th Girmit Remembrance Day at

are still men and women alive in
Fiji today who were born before the
Girmit ended in 1920. Less than one
lifetime separates us from this cruel

like at the time, to see through the eyes

encouraged all Fijians, regardless of
age, ethnicity or background, to take
the time to read these stories. They
have within them lessons that we all

n case of Maharashtra, the election results that will be
declared on May 23, will not be only about who wins the
Lok Sabha. The outcome will also show which way the wind
is blowing ahead of the state assembly elections that will be
held in five months. The results on Maharashtra’s 48 Lok Sabha
seats will show which side — ruling BJP-Shiv Sena alliance or
opposing Congress-NCP-led coalition — is better placed to win
power in the state.
One can expect one of three probable scenarios when the votes
are counted on May 23 and results are declared. Let’s take a look
at them:
First is the possibility of BJP-led National Democratic
Alliance (NDA) repeating the performance of 2014 Lok Sabha
elections. At the time the NDA had won 42 of 48 parliamentary
seats in Maharashtra while the Congress-NCP alliance managed
to win only six.
If people respond to BJP’s call for `Modi Sarkar Phir Ek
Bar’ and the reuniting of saffron parties helps the NDA, they
will hit a target of around 40 or above. This will be a desirable
scenario for the BJP and Sena. It will come as a big boost for
chief minister Devendra Fadnavis who is heading the NDA in
Maharashtra and could also mean his government could be on
its way to win a second tenure. On the other hand, this will turn
out to be a nightmare for the Congress-NCP as both the parties in
the alliance could be staring at losing more and more ground to
the ruling combine. Several senior leaders from both the parties
could end up making their way to greener pastures of the BJP
or Sena.The second scenario could be the Congress-NCP-led
coalition or United Progressive Alliance (UPA) winning more
seats that the NDA — something like 30 or above it. This can
happen only if there is a strong undercurrent against the Modi
government at the Centre. Theoretically speaking, such a result
will mean a turning point for the Opposition parties. It will mean
the Fadnavis government heading for ouster in the assembly
elections. As of now, even the optimistic in the Opposition camp
are hopeful of reaching 30.
The third scenario is sort of a middle ground for both sides:

Khan in Angrezi Medium.

Asked about how she is preparing for the
role, Kareena said: “Oh God, I am super excited
for this film. I have worked with all the Khans

me, it is an honour and privilege to work with
Irrfan Khan.

“I am extremely excited to play the human computer, Shakuntala Devi, on the big screen. She
was truly someone who embraced her individuality, had a strong feminist voice and braved many
a naysayer to reach the pinnacle of success,” Vidya said in a statement.
“But what truly fascinates me is that you wouldn’t normally associate a fun person with math...
and she completely turns that perception on its head.”
“I am thrilled that Vikram, who I’ve worked with on Kahaani, and his team are producing the
film. Vikram, Anu and I are proud to bring to life the story of one of the most inspiring women of
this country,” said Vidya, who has been widely lauded for her versatility.

was a small-town Indian girl, who took the world by storm,” she

Shakuntala’s genius was first discovered at the age of 5, when she
solved a math problem meant for 18-year-old students. Though she
never received any formal education, her talent for numbers also
earned her a place in the 1982 edition of the Guinness Book of
