Greetings fellow Modelers,
The holidays are upon us and this meeting will be the
last of 2012 so please remember to re-up your club dues.
Also please be sure to sign up for the club Christmas
Party so we can forward a headcount to the Deer Valley Airport
restaurant. See Chuck’s Christmas Party info article for details.
To be awarded at the Christmas Party will be the
Modeler of the Year and Member of the Year.
Modeler of the Year is determined by our monthly club contests.
Member of the Year is chosen from the members who
have gone above and beyond in service and volunteerism to
promoting our club and our hobby. Nominations will be
accepted at this meeting see any of the club officers with your
choices.

"Christmas Mouse says ,"Sign up, if you already have not done so, at the Dec. 4
meeting for the Craig Hewitt IPMS Phoenix Christmas party. The party is Saturday
December 15 at the Deer Valley Airport Restaurant 702 W. Deer Valley Rd (NW corner
of Deer Valley Rd. and 7th Ave.) The location is off I-17. The restaurant has a web site
(www.DeerValleyAirportRestaurant.com)with map. The party begins at 6:00 PM. The
menu consists of 5 choices of entree including roast chicken, roast turkey, hot beef
sandwich, ham steak or spaghetti. Side dishes are potato, vegetable, soup or salad,
mini loaf, soft drinks and cake. The entire meal including tax and tip will be $18 payable
at the restaurant. We ask you to please sign up in advance so the restaurant can be
prepared. The program will consist of a raffle (what else?) and presentation of awards
to the Modeler of the Year and the Member of the Year. This is a low key affair so no

Book Review
Naked In Da Nang
A Forward Air Controller In Viet Nam

I appreciate well-written books about aviation, especially when the author can put the reader in the cockpit during the action. This is one
of those books.
The book begins with the author waiting to except an award, seated in the Veterans Hall in Columbus, Ohio. The story unfolds as a flash-
back, starting with his arrival in Viet Nam, as he steps off an airliner at Cam Ranh Bay into a world unlike anything he had ever known.
Two weeks later that same green kid started the first of his 210 combat missions, climbing into his twin-engine O-2A, pushing up the
throttles, and coolly initiated a takeoff roll that would place him directly over some of the most heavily defended turf in the history of
warfare.
The job description for a FAC Pilot as described by the author,…. “FACing was not a job for the faint of heart or the slow of wit or, in
my case, the sound of mind. FACs hugged the Earth, plodding along at ridiculously low levels to direct air strikes, observe troop move-
ments, gather intelligence, and/or choreograph search-and-rescue missions. The FAC had to be a master of multitasking long before
computers popularized the term. We were the traffic cops of Southeast Asia, telling everyone where to go, when to go, how to get there,
and what to do once they were there. We were everybody’s eyes and ears, everybody’s link to one another”
The author shares many of his experiences, in the air and on the ground, good and bad, serious and funny, and a lot about himself in the
process, as he weaves his personal history throughout the story. He gets into some of the politics of the time, hard not to do when talking
about that war, while keeping the dialog with the reader upbeat and fast paced, but always giving the reader as much as he can about liv-
ing and fighting the war in Viet Nam.
The story chronicles the author’s experiences of the 366 days he spent in combat 1971-72, which included the massive NVA Easter Of-
fensive. He was also part of the team of FACs who managed the rescue of BAT-21, immortalized in the movie of the same name.

PJ Productions for providing the seat, and to Steve Collins and IPMS/USA for letting me do the review.
I have built several PJ Productions kits, done at least one of their conversions, and a number of their detail parts. I have real respect
for Phillipe’s ability to produce a really good resin product.
You get one resin pour with 2 seats and 2 ejection handles. Both of the seats were free of flaws or bubbles, and those fine little han-
dle assemblies were also flawless.
Rather than start from scratch with this project, I thought I would take a Mirage I had built previously and add the PJP seat. I could
have used a Jaguar, but decided that it would be nicer to improve one of my several Mirages. Then I ran into the problem. Three of
the four Mirage kits I’ve built have been PJ Production kits or conversions, and they already had good resin seats. OK, I was going
to use a Dagger I built 20 years ago with Argentine markings from the Malvinas/Falklands war. And to tell the truth, I can’t remem-
ber whose kit it is.
I popped the canopy off the aircraft and removed the seat. Unfortunately it didn’t come out cleanly, as can be seen in the photo.
Also note that the kit seat is remarkably free of any detail.
I painted the seat, using the tiny photo on the package as my guide. I left the seat and handle on the pour sprue for ease of handling.
I used Floquil blue for the cushion and Floquil Old Silver for the belt buckles. The rest of the colors were Tamiya acrylics. Every-
thing was brush painted.

The handle was painted with Floquil Reefer Yellow. The black marks were done with a fine-point Sharpie pen.
When the paint was dry, I removed the seat from the sprue with a razor saw. The only way I could cut the seat was from the outer
edge inward, as the saw blade would hit that fairly fragile handle, and I was afraid of damaging the handle.. This is where the trage-
dy occurred. As the saw blade cut through the last of the seat, it then proceeded to demolish both sets of handles.
Fortunately I still remember the advice of my friend and mentor, George Reny, who said, “There’s nothing you can screw up that
you can’t fix. Sometimes it requires a whole new kit, but you CAN fix it..” I found some tag wire, which was the same diameter as
the damaged handles. I bent it to shape, using a pair of needle-nosed pliers, and painted it yellow with black stripes. I then attached
the replacement handle.
Nevertheless, next time I tackle one of these sets, I will make the first cut through the sprue to separate the seat and handles, thereby
avoiding the problem I’ve had.
A bit of gel-type super glue on the bottom of the seat holds it in the cockpit,. I glued the canopy back on, and it looks really great in
there. A huge improvement.
OVERALL EVALUATION: Highly recommended. I have a number of older kits which could use this type of upgrade for the inte-
rior.
