CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the Journal

Title : THE USE OF QUESTIONING THE

AUTHOR (QtA) STRATEGY IN

IMPROVING STUDENTS’ ABILITY IN

READING DESCRIPTIVE TEXT AT THE

SEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMP

ISLAM PLUS JANNATUL FIRDAUS

PEKANBARU.

Reading is one of crucial skill that should be mastered by the students in

learning English after listening, speaking and writing. Based on English Syllabus

of the Curriculum (KTSP 2006) of the seventh grade of junior high school, the

students were required to comprehend text types in form of Procedure and

Descriptive text. So, the teacher applies the right strategies to help students

understand the text. Therefore, researchers want to apply a reading strategy called

the Questioning the Author (QtA) strategy.

B. Purpose of the Critic Journal

The purpose of criticizing this journal is to find out how to systematically

make the right journal, and improve students' ability to read descriptive text using

Questioning the Author (QtA) strategy. Because there are still many students who

cannot understand the contents of descriptive text. And also to fulfill the

assignment requirements for Intermediate Reading courses.

CHAPTER II

DISCUSSION

A. Title of the Journal

According the guidelines for writing standardization journal papers, the

journal titles that I criticize are appropriate, because they contain specific,

informative, and clear titles. The title also typed in capital letters and bold.

B. Writer’s name/Author name

The name of the author of this journal is it clear, uses a real name and does

not use a title. The main author is also at the front. The author's name should not

be abbreviated. But the name of author the journal that I criticized was an

abbreviation, namely M. Fadhly.

C. Author’s address

The journal author's address used is author's own email address. In

accordance with journal writing guidelines.

D. Abstract

About journal abstract that I criticize using English and no more than 200

words. In the abstract explains the problem, the purpose of researching, and the

method used.

E. Keywords

The journal keywords that I criticize use English which consists of 3 single

words or compound words. Keywords are placed under the abstract.

F. Contents of the research Journal

The contents of the research journal as follows:

1. Introduction

The journal introduction that I criticized consisted of background. The

author explains the notion of reading (the author's research topic) and gave

purpose for research.

2. Literature Review

Regarding the literature review, the author gives an explanation of

reading, teaching reading, descriptive text, and questioning the author

strategy, and provides understanding from experts.

3. Research Methods

In this journal the author lists the methods used.

4. Result and Discussion

In this journal, the author explains the results and discussion he gets. In

his research in SMP Islam Plus Jannatul Firdaus Pekanbaru, the author

uses diagrams for data analysis of students reading descriptive texts.

5. Conclusion

After the author conducted the study, the author gave the conclusion

that Questioning the Author (QtA) Strategy can improve students' ability

to read descriptive texts and can affect student grades to increase.

6. Say Thank-you/Thank-you note

The author does not give a thank you in this journal.

7. Bibliography/References

In this journal the author provides a bibliography of more than 10

bibliography. How to write a bibliography in accordance with standard

journal writing guidelines.

CONCLUSION

A. Conclusion

After I read and criticized this journal, I can conclude and suggest that this

journal is good and can be used for students, educators, and etc. The format of

writing this journal is in accordance with the guidelines for writing

standardization journals. I find a little mistake in writing this journal is shortening

the name of the author and not giving thank-you note.

From criticizing this journal, I learned that if I become an educator, I can

apply Questioning the Author (QtA) Strategy for the students. And that’s all my

critical journal review, Thank You.
