Q 2. LONG QUESTIONS: (ATTEMPT ANY FIVE: 12 MARKS EACH) RELATED COs
i. (a) If the surface tension of water in contact with air is 0.075 N/m, what correction
need be applied towards capillary rise in the manometric readings in tubes of 3 mm CO1
diameter? &
(b) A rectangular plate of 2 m wide is submerged in water vertically such that its top
and bottom surfaces are 2 m and 5 m respectively below the free surface. Determine CO2
the total hydrostatic force on one side of the plate and the location of the centre of
pressure. Take g = 9.81 m/s2.
ii. Obtain the equation of the streamlines for the velocity field given as: CO3

iii. A pipe of 30 mm diameter conveying 2.5 litres/s of water has a right angled bend in CO4

the pressure at inlet and outlet of the bend are 2.35 bar and 2.25 bar respectively.

iv. (a) Find the radius in a steady, fully developed, laminar flow in a circular pipe CO5
where the local velocity is equal to the half of average velocity.
(b) An oil with density 900 kg/m3 and viscosity 0.16 Pa-s is flowing through a 20
cm diameter pipe. The maximum shear stress at the pipe wall is 205 N/m2.
Determine (i) the pressure gradient (ii) the average velocity of flow (iii) the
maximum velocity of the flow.
v. For the velocity profile given below, obtain the expression for the boundary layer CO7
thickness, skin friction coefficient and coefficient of drag :

vi. Water at 200C is flowing through a hydro-dynamically smooth pipe of diameter 40 CO5
cm and length 1000 m at the rate of 20 litres/s. Determine the (a) friction factor (b)
loss of head (c) shear stress at the pipe surface (d) shear velocity (e) maximum
velocity (f) thickness of laminar sublayer. The density and kinematic viscosity of
water at 20oC are 1000 kg/m3 and 1 × 10-6 m2/s.

i. What is Siphon effect? CO6
ii. Two reservoirs are connected by a pipeline consisting of two pipes in series; one of
15 cm diameter and 6 m long and another of 22.5 cm diameter and 15 m long. If the
difference in water levels of the reservoirs is 6.0 m, calculate the discharge by
considering all losses. Assume friction factor (f ) = 0.020 for both pipes. Also draw
HGL and EGL for the given system
