End of Year
Newsletter

May 17, 2019

Dear Parents,
I can’t believe that this is the last newsletter of the year! It doesn’t seem possible. As
I write this last newsletter, I have mixed emotions because your children have found a
special place in my heart and I will miss them; but I am also very happy to think about
the restful summer that is ahead! They are an exceptional group of children, and I have
been very blessed by having had each one of them in my class this year. Thank you for
sharing them with me! One of the most amazing and distinguishable qualities of this
class has been the kindness that they have shown for each other throughout the year.
This class attribute has made this a very special year for all of us.
Your child is bringing home today a folder full of summer practice and review
material to help keep the first-grade skills that we have learned this year sharp. (The
work in this folder is all optional except for the Dinosaurs Before Dark assignment.)
Please continue to provide your child with educational activities over the summer. This
could give your child a definite advantage going into the second grade. Please make
sure that your child has the opportunity to READ, READ, READ over the summer.
Also, use summer vacation to review addition and subtraction math facts.
Please keep in mind that your child has required reading for the summer. All
students going into second grade need to read Dinosaurs Before Dark by Mary Pope
Osborne. There is also an assignment for this book that your child will need to
complete and turn in on the first day of school. The form for this assignment is being
sent home today with the summer practice material.
I would like to thank Tosca Jones and Trista Dobkins for being our room mothers this
year. They have given so unselfishly of their time and talents, and they have kept us all
informed and connected.
Please keep in mind that Wednesday is Field Day and the last day of school for
students. After Field Day ends on Wednesday, parents are welcome to sign out their
children.  There will be no attendance penalty for taking your child home early that day.
We will follow regular lunch procedures for those who remain. The school day will
end at 3:15 and no after-school care will be provided.
I would like to thank you, as parents, for helping to make this such a great year! You
have been so thoughtful, encouraging, generous, and helpful! Thank you for all the
many ways that you have helped this year! This year would not have been possible
without you!
Thank you again for a wonderful year! I hope that all of you have a safe, restful, and
enjoyable summer!

Love,
Susan Douglas
