Executive Summary
A new Pew Research Center survey of Muslims around the globe finds that most adherents of the
world’s second-largest religion are deeply committed to their faith and want its teachings to
shape not only their personal lives but also their societies and politics. In all but a handful of the
39 countries surveyed, a majority of Muslims say that Islam is the one true faith leading to
eternal life in heaven and that belief in God is necessary to be a moral person.

ISLAM AND MODERN SCIENCE
Introduction
Islam

Islam is the most spreading religion in the world. The belief in Allah is the cornerstone of
the entire faith of Islam. All of the other Islamic beliefs and all Islamic practices revolve
around the proper belief in God. For this reason, perhaps more than any other religious
community in the world, the belief about God in Islam has been explained in great detagion
on the world.

Modern Science

Science is collective, public knowledge, it is universal and free of contradiction, and it

basically emerges from science and is nevertheless bathed in ignorance and subject to
change. Science is everywhere in the world as we are considered to be our self in modern
era of science.

Background Information

In Islamic history there are the events which are attached to Prophets, kings, conquerors and
eminent personalities and significant events of the ages past. Islam alone is such a religion and
Muslims alone are a nation which have their history wholly and solely preserved and intact, and
no part thereof has ever been doubtful. No nation of the world can share this peculiarity and
distinct feature of this nation. Modern Science is also having its roots from the day first. We
must consider that they both are almost going parallel. The science is an endeavor dedicated to
the accumulation and classification of observable facts in order to formulate general laws about
the natural world.

ISLAM AND MODERN SCIENCE
Purpose of studying Islam and Modern Science

It is the basic and most fundamental responsibility for our generation to understand Islam and
Science. In modern world it is very difficult for us to lead others without understanding both of
them as one. As Muslim our first priority must be to understand and learn about Islam. But in
Islam it is not binding to us to just stick with Islam, but also go for other universal findings
which are hidden.

Importance of studying Islam and Modern Science

In this modern age of world science has very much involvement in our daily life. As a Muslim it
is important for us to have full knowledge about it in order to survive in this modern era. Science
is totally related with Islam as the historians said 100% of science is correct As they have
discovered 67% of it, which is Stated in Islamic book obviously it is Quran.

It is very much important for us to take both of them positively and importantly. As Muslim we
lack behind just because of not considering science as not the part of religion. By taking the
advantage of that others leads us and leave us behind. It is just because of mindsets of our society
by few Islamic preacher of Isla

Scope of studying Islam and Modern Science

It comes as no surprise, therefore, to learn that in Islam religion and science have always been
considered as twin sisters and that today, at a time when science has taken such great strides,
they still continue to be associated. Nor is it a surprise to learn that certain scientific data are
used for the better understanding of the Qur’anic text. Science is the part of Islam.

Limitations while studying Islam and Science

In treating the limitation of science, it is worthy of note from the onset that we shall discuss
more extensively modern science to be able to treat its limitation most appropriately in the
21st century. Ever since the beginning of modern era of science 300 years ago, the scientist
has been embarrassed at times when they undertook to describe the scope and objective of
science.

It is not so easy to outline the scope, objective and limitation of science. This owes chiefly
from the difficulty of establishing some simple entity that will contain all conjugate terms as
well as the reminders that must be included and that involve the limitations of science
chiefly. Mankind has never devised a better tool for solving the mysteries of the universe
than science.

Misrepresentation of Islam and Modern science

Portraying Islam as a medieval religion today is continuation of an extensive campaign to

weaken the Muslim’s commitment and attachment to Islam. This campaign started when the
light of Islam was still being spread in Europe.

Intellectual Incursions. It was through process of introducing (under the guise of logic and
common sense) certain philosophical concepts that led to much controversy. The results were
disastrous for Muslims with emergence of sects and defeats in the wars against Christian
crusaders.

Methods of studying Islam and Science

Research Method

Muslim scholars have developed a spectrum of viewpoints on science within the context
of Islam. The Quran and Islam allows for much interpretation when it comes to science.
At the same time, concerns have been raised about the lack of scientific literacy in parts of the
modern Muslim world.

1.1 Positive

Some Muslim writers have claimed that the Quran made prescient statements about scientific
phenomena that were later confirmed by scientific research for instance as regards to the structure
of the embryo, our solar system, and the creation of the universe.

1.2 Negative

Science is often defined as the pursuit of knowledge and understanding of the natural and social
world following a systematic methodology based on evidence. It is a system of acquiring
knowledge based on empiricism, experimentation and methodological naturalism, as well as to the
organized body of knowledge human beings have gained by such research.

Experimental Method

Historical Islamic scientists like Al-Biruni and Al-Battani derived their inspiration from verses of
the Quran. Mohammad Hashim Kamali has stated that "scientific observation, experimental
knowledge and rationality" are the primary tools with which humanity can achieve the goals laid
out for it in the Quran.[Ziauddin Sardarargues that Muslims developed the foundations of modern
science, by "highlighting the repeated calls of the Quran to observe and reflect upon natural
phenomenon". "The 'scientific method,' as it is understood today, was first developed by Muslim
scientists" like Ibn al-Haytham and Al-Biruni, along with numerous other Muslim scientists.

Organization

Upon science - but guided by universal moral principles - depends the continuation of
civilized human existence on earth. The past tells us so. Without science humankind was
helpless before wind and storm, ravaged by plague and disease, and terrorized by mindless
superstitions. Wasted was the incomparable instrument it possessed: the human mind.
Then human beings created science, and science liberated them from superstition

Conclusion

Muslims need to regain their past glory through an organized and consistent methodology. Only
then the West will feel encouraged to trust the Muslims in spite of hatred and mistrust sown by
their forefathers over a long period. The onus of proving the authenticity and credibility of Islam
as a modern religion lies with the Muslims. Instead of suffering from inferiority complex and
giving in to the harsh realities of the present time, Muslims must to trust their capabilities to
master their destiny as their predecessors did under far worse conditions. Importance of
education and morals are ordained for the Muslims and the rewards are far reaching for the
coming generations. Inaction in this aspect will only strengthen the misconceptions of non-
Muslims about Islam.

Recommendations

Will to Struggle
The vibrant societies have a will to live and struggle for a better place in the world.
Choosing the right direction with appropriate methodology to direct the struggle is
important. Being a Muslim the only way to solve our problems and also to achieve
progress is to revive our true faith in Islam, to reduce our dependence on the West.

Role of Organizations
As already mentioned, most of the Muslim world organizations are regional interest
7

oriented. Organization of Islamic Conference is also doing little in the larger interest of
Page

the Ummah. Most of its declarations of intent are a mere lip service.

7
ISLAM AND MODERN SCIENCE
Role of Media
Media has played a negative role in portraying Islam as a medieval religion. It can also
be used to help create understanding between Islam and the West. The effort needs to
come from both sides. Media need to take a more balanced and more understanding
position.

Sponsorship of Students and Scientists

Promising Muslim students should be recognized and sponsored by governments to
provide them high quality education in affiliated universities round the Muslim world.
These students will also be indoctrinated to serve their nation rather than falling for a
dreamy world away from their home.
