Teaching Practice Task 1: Weekly Reflections

Program link: This task is associated to the guidelines of the content courses EPC 3403 – Practicum 3a,
EPR 3003 – Mathematics for the Primary School Teacher and EPR 3203 – Mathematics Teaching
Methods for the Primary School Teacher. It is a reflection of how you have applied the theories learned
in the college courses.

Objective: Write your weekly reflection in paragraph form (in a blog on your wix website). You should
complete a reflection of a min. of 150 words for each week. Remember, it is your personal account of
your thoughts, feelings and reactions during your time in the school.

You can use this table to make notes / jot down ideas during TP. It would also be helpful to consistently
reflect on your professional development. When completed you will upload your work to your blog and
add pictures to support the ideas written about.

This is a combination of 4 weeks reflections

How is Math delivered in the classroom? What were the learning outcomes taught? Were all levels (E,
D, and M) taught? How (or why not if they weren’t)?

My MST was always using real life examples to teach grade 1 math, because it’s connected to their
cognitive thinking ability, when teacher said for example if you go to the lulu and car four students
will recognise the concept more.

Teacher were working in one outcome for 2 days, so for example (Sunday, Monday they will be
working in outcome) in (Tuesday, Wednesday they will be working in other outcome) finally in
Thursday it will be revision for both outcomes.

The teacher designs the classroom into 4 group 1 high group, 1 medium group and 2 low group, in
math terms the high group will be abstract, the medium will be pictorial and low group will be
concrete. And teacher put the students in this category based on their math level and the pre-test in
the beginning of the year.

How was your Math Talk during the lessons that you were teaching Math or working with small groups?

Teacher in the beginning of the lesson teach the students the vocabulary of the week with
explanation, they must repeat it 3 times to memorize it. Also, in the activities time students will be
saying the explanation of the word to the teacher because the teacher will be going around the
centres to check the work and the understanding of vocabulary.
What did you do to create and maintain a positive environment in the classroom?

I used some creative ideas to teach the students numbers for example the foot in the group were the
students must step into the foot and say the number, this idea will help grade 1 student to count and
memorize the number.

Also, another idea that I mention to put a number line in a corner of a classroom to let the students
play after they finish their activity they will have a matt where they can set on it and play in math
game from the games corner.

This will help the students to finish their work fast put also in accurate way because one of the MOE
objectives is teach the students (speed and accuracy)

How was your timing for your transitions? Did it go smoothly? Did you get caught up in what you were
doing and forget the time? Were the students noisy/calm?

In the first lesson it was very hard to divide the time wisely because I was worried about the
understanding of the lesson, so there was lacking the time management students took 25 minutes in
the hook and the teaching 15 minutes in the centres and 5 minutes in the closing and assessment
which it not a good timing. Also, the students were very noisy, but I used some classroom
management to stop the noise.

How did you introduce the math centre this week? 1 day/over a few days/during other lessons/whole
class/guided groups?

The teacher introduces it in the beginning of the week and I continue it. The learning strategy worked
into the whole class all of them get the same learning type but different activities. I give each group
their activity and show them on example on it and then I let them work on it.

How did you monitor the learning when the children were working on their activities? Did you use
rubrics? How did it go?

I walk around when the students were working on their activity I also has a check list to check each
students understanding. So, as I write in the check list I have a bigger vision on the students
understating and I know which students need more help. So, in the next lesson I will bring some more
materials and examples to teach the students much more.

Did you observe any math strategies this week? Or did you teach any math strategies? Or did the
teacher teach/use any math strategies when teaching?

I observe the ten-block material, where the teacher could use it into different ways to let the students
learn a concept. Also, think pair share where the teacher asks a question an then she give the
students one minute to think and then they most share it their partner. It was very effective ways to
teach math and I will use it to the different grades in the future.
