SINGLE STUB MATCHING

AIM:
To find the length and position of a single stub
to match a given unknown load.
COMPONENTS REQUIRED:
o Gunn power supply
o Gunn oscillator
o Pin modulator
o Isolator
o Frequency meter
o Slotted section with detector and running
probe
o CRO and power supply
o Unknown load and single stub
FORMULA:
Distance between successive minima=x2-x1=⋋g/D
VSWR =Vmax/Vmin
Unknown load impedance(Z1)=Z0[1-J(vswr-tan(β∆l)]/vswr-
jtan(β∆l)
β∆l=2π(x3-x3’)/⋋g
Where,
ZL=unknown load impedance
β=phase shift
x1=first min when load is short circuited
x2=second min when the load shorted
x3=shift with respect to short circuit minima
⋋g=guided wavelength
∆l=shift in minima
THEORY:
Stub matches are widely used to match any
complex. Load to transmission line. They consist if
shorted a opened segments of the line connected in
parallel or in series with the line at a appropriate
distance from me load. A stub is short circuited section
of transmission line connected is parallel to the main
transmission line. A stub of appropriate length is
placed at some distance. Suppose that we have a load
impedance ZL connected to the transmission line with
characteristics impedance Z0. The objective here is that
no reflection should to seen by the generator. This can
be achieved by actually stub line main line such that
time reflected. Other to give no net reflected wave
from the load.
CALCULATIONS:
X1=9.25
X2=11.79
X3’=13.4
Vmax=140mv Vmin=42mv
Vswr =Vmax/Vmin = 3.33
⋋g=2*2.54=5.08cm
β∆l=2π*1.61/5.08=-2
∆l=1.61/5.08=0.316
tan(β∆l)=2.18
ZL =1-J (vswr*tan(β∆l))/vswr-j tan(β∆l)
=1- j 7.259/3.33 -j 2.18
=1.209-1.388 j
Length of stub = 0.5/5.08=0.1⋋
Position of stub =3.7 cm = 0.7667⋋
PROCEDURE:
i) Set the experimental setup so that we get
square wave initially in CRO when output is
left open.
ii) The output is then shorted by a square short
plane and the dip in voltage is noted.
iii) The position is varied and the first and second
minimum are obtained.
iv) Now, load is connected and adjusted for next
minimum
v) Now, stub is connected between load and
source and the length and position of the stub
are raised to get the minimum value. This
length and position give us the length of stub
and its position for impedance matching.
RESULT:
The single stub matching is done. The length
of stub is 0.1⋋ practically and the position of stub in
0.76⋋.
