Factors Affecting the Decrease of Civil Engineering Student’s Population in Technological Institute of the

Philippines Quezon City

CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

INTRODUCTION

RATIONALE IMPORTANCE

The Technological Institute of the Philippines (TIP) was established in February

8, 1962, and Quezon City campus was opened in 1983. It offers different courses which

include Bachelor of Science in Engineering, among others. With this, the Department of

Civil Engineering was founded to educate and support the students who wish to focus in

the said field of study.

TIP Civil Engineering students perform well and demonstrate improvements in

their studies. In this regard, TIP is considered as one of the institutes or colleges that

produce competitive students. This achievement is due perhaps of the trained and

knowledgeable instructors and professors of the said institution.

However, the Department of Civil Engineering is currently undergoing decrease

in number of population of students and causes a threat to the institute in general.

The study wants to give the real picture of the whole situation of the civil

engineering student’s population. This then would be a great help to those aspiring civil

engineering students, to school and to the community as well.

To the community, this study will provide the necessary information about the

factors affecting the decrease of civil engineering students. Giving them an idea on how

hard it is to study civil engineering and it will also help them to set themselves on the

incoming problems that they will meet, once they study civil engineering.

The study will also help the school in providing better educational services

for civil engineering students. With the information that this study will provide, this

school can contribute to their studying civil engineering students.

This study will give the researchers and the other civil engineering students an

overview on the factors affecting the decrease of their population in TIP. This will serve
as a sneak peak to the problems that a student undergoes in studying the said profession,

and will give them warnings on the things that they should have to avoid so that they can

graduate peacefully and joyfully on their chosen profession.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Civil engineering is one of the earliest branches of engineering. It deals with the

structural design and construction of commercial, industrial, public buildings, bridges,

dams, etc. Civil engineering plays an important role in or daily lives.

There are so many opportunities in civil engineering profession. This is the reason

why many high school graduates dreams to study, and wishes to become an engineer

someday.

In TIP, there were many civil engineering freshmen students who wish to learn

and educate much with the lessons they have to pass. Unfortunately, there are

many factors affecting the study of these civil engineering students which causes

the decrease on their number.

As students of civil engineering, the researchers made this study to create an

assessment of the decrease of civil engineering student’s population every semester. The

study was made by the researchers with the belief that students and other people

concerned needs to have an awareness with the situations of civil engineering students

was undergoing.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The study aims to find the factors affecting the decrease of population of civil

engineering students in Technological Institute of the Philippines, Quezon City.

This are the following questions that this study wants to answer:

1. What is the profile of the students respondents with regards to their:

2.1 Gender

2.2 Age

2.3 Scholarship

2.4 Occupation

2.5 With failing grades

2. What are the fundamental factors affecting the decrease of population of civil

engineering students in Technological Institute of the Philippines, Quezon City?

3. What are the reasons why students have failing grades?

SCOPES AND LIMITATIONS

This study covers only the freshman civil engineering students from

Technological Institute of the Philippines, Quezon City. Both male and female students

are included in this study. The questioners will be given out to respondents from

February, 2012 to March, 2012. Fifty (50) respondents were included in this

research. The questions in the questionnaires that we would give to the respondents are

only those questions that can be seen in the statement of the problem. The study would

just focus on the factors affecting the decrease of civil engineering students in TIP and

would not cover any other topics. The study would be held inside the school and would

not cover other universities.

“Behavior at School”

http://nichcy.org/schoolage/behavior/atschool

November 2009

The Author states that Schools presents a unique challenge for children with behavior issues. The
Teachers supports and guide the student, the Administrators creates a positive learning atmosphere
within the entire school and lastly Parents must know the information on how to work with school staff
to address their child’s behavior challenges in the school setting.

“Many mid-Michigan MEAP test results show decrease in students deemed proficient”

By: Kristen Wilkerson

The Author states that Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) released the results of the
fall, 2011, test for grades three through eight. According to a statement released online by the Michigan
Department of Education, the state average improved one percent in mathematics and over three
percent in reading. But the state enhanced the cut scores to identify the grade level progress and
readiness for college or after-school employment thus many students cannot catch the required
standards’ cut scores.

“Hanging the Perception of the Norm: A Strategy to Decrease Binge Drinking among College Students”
Michael Haines MSa & Sherilynn F. Spear PhDa

The author states that Drinking is one of the factors that affect the decrease of the College Students. In
order to decrease binge drinking among college student is to change college Students’ perception of
drinking may lower the proportion of the students who engage in binge drinking.

Local Literature and Studies

“Laying the Foundation for Positive Classroom Behavior”

By Pearson Education Development Group

The Author states that Classroom behavior is one of the trickiest issues teachers face today. One thing
the teacher can do is to promote positive behavior before the problems arise. The teachers were polled
on this issue; they ranked classroom control/discipline as the number one challenge. But if you begin
with a good foundation, it is possible to build or to promote positive behavior

“Interventional Strategies to Decrease Nursing Student Anxiety in the Clinical Learning Environment”

Linda M. Moscaritolo, MS, MSN, RN, BC

The Author wants to enhance clinical nursing faculty with peer instructors and mentors and mindfulness
training as strategies to decrease undergraduate nurse anxiety in a clinic. Because anxiety can affect the
students’ clinical performance.

“The Effects of Online Gaming to the Studies of Students”

The author states that an online game is a game played over some form of computer network. The
expansion of online gaming has reflected the over all expansion of computer network from small local
networks to the internet and the growth on the Internet access itself. Online games can range from
simple text based games to games incorporating complex graphics and virtual worlds populated by
many players simultaneously. This Online gaming can cause the students to cut their classes and not go
to school.

Definition of Terms

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Research Method Used

Survey method of conducting research was employed in this study wherein the researcher

distributed survey questionnaires to the student respondents to be answered independently.

Survey methods is the most appropriate approach to be used in this study aside from theoretical

and conceptual research because the targeted results are actual and personal opinion and ideas of

the student respondent. Given that the subject of the study is an actual situation that concerns the

students.

Population Frame

The survey was conducted inside the Quezon City campus of Technological Institute of

the Philippines. The randomly selected 50 respondents are students in first year and were all

currently enrolled students to the institution.

Sampling Technique

The study employed simple random sampling wherein the student respondents are

randomly selected from the total population.

Description of the Respondents

The respondents are first year civil engineering students regardless of their gender. The

classes of the first year students were selected to be the source of respondents in the survey.

Instrumentation

The study used survey instruments in the form of questionnaires. This includes open and

close ended questions. The instrument was distributed to the respondents and answered without

the assistance of survey enumerator.

Data Gathering Procedures

The survey was conducted through the distribution of questionnaires to the classes of the

targeted respondents. This was appropriate to use in order to maximize the time allotted to finish

the research study.

Statistical Treatment of Data

The data was analyzed by using the percentage of the student’s response to the total

number of respondents on specific questions or predicaments.

Formula:

P = (f / n) X 100%

Where P – percentage of the student

f – number of students

n – total number of respondents
