PROGRESS TEST OF DISCUSSION TEXT & REVIEW TEXT

Death penalty is one of the most controversial subjects to be discussed today. This controversy is
caused by so many things all over the world having so many different views about it. Death penalty
happens when someone is put to death for a crime, for example murder or drug trafficking. Many
people think death penalty should be reinstated in Britain, but there are just as many people who
think that the criminal system is better the way it is.
One important argument against the death penalty is that sometimes an innocent person is put
to death. (6) … death penalty is used, the authorities must therefore have evidence beyond the
shadow of any doubt that they have accused the correct person. Therefore, it removes all possibilities
for a person who has done something seriously wrong to be able to change and to be rehabilitated.
Another strong point against death penalty is that two wrongs do not make a right. (7) …,
killing a victim and then being sentenced to death do not suddenly make everything all right or make
things better. A poor and helpless victim’s life has been stolen from him, but killing the murder will
not bring the victim back.
(8) …, those who are in favor of the death penalty have many points to justify their stance. Most
importantly, it punishes the criminal by doing to him what he did to others. It acts as a form of
revenge for the victim’s family by letting them know that the criminal has felt some of the pain he
inflicted on another.
Furthermore, death penalty could act as a deterrent to anyone who ever thought about
committing certain crimes (9) … he would know that when he was found guilty, the death penalty
awaited him. It can also save money because, instead of the criminal being kept in person for the rest
of his life, he is killed.
(10) … weighing up the arguments for and against death penalty, I have come to the conclusion
that I am for it, and that it is a pity that it has been abolished in Britain thirty years ago.

Everywhere you go nowadays, you see people use mobile phones. From children at school age to
adult people hand them in almost everywhere. It is a quite interesting phenomenon, isn’t it?
So what are the advantages of mobile phones? First of all, they are very convenient because we
can phone from nearly anywhere. We need no rigid old wired telephone to communicate with people.
The size of mobile phones makes us easy to carry them anywhere. They can be used really
conveniently.
Another advantage is that they are really useful in urgent situations. For example, if we are
alone in our car and it breaks down, we can get help quickly. In addition, when we are away from our
computer or laptop, we can also use our mobile phones to help us doing our work digitally or finding
any information we need by connecting them to the internet. It is faster than waiting until we can use
our computer or laptop.
On the other hand, there is always negative side for every the positive side. Mobile phones
charge us several amounts of cost. When we use them unwisely, we will make enormous expenses
weekly or monthly only for the mobile phones usage balance or to buy the internet data package.
Furthermore, misuse of mobile phone in society will lead to bothersome situation. Imagine if we
are on a train or a bus or at any other public places and we have to listen to someone else’s boring
conversation. It happens because people can communicate anywhere, at any time, unless we switch
them off.
In conclusion, there are both advantages and disadvantages. I personally feel mobile phones are
good because they give us efficiency and make our communication easier. Of course we need to use
them prudently.
