This article shows ten ways that you can
promote your child’s cognitive development.
“Cognitive development is characterized by the
way a child learns, acquires knowledge and
interacts with his surrounding environment.”
The article includes things that you can do with
your child in a matter of minutes, and they are
things that you can do throughout the entire
day as well. One thing that the article suggests
is to practice counting out loud to Harper. You
can do this while she does activities such as
putting objects such as blocks in a row. You can
also count things out loud to her that you see
in your home such as pictures, or crayons.

something that you can do every time you are
doing something with your child. Just use
descriptive talk with her about everything that
you are doing and seeing.

without spending money or without leaving
your house at all. This article includes
descriptions of the activities, and what the
benefit of each of those activities is going to
be. For example, one of the suggestions is to
schedule play dates with other children who
are the same age. This is a great way to
introduce your child to their peers and give
them an opportunity to play and socialize with
them. These suggestions will hopefully help
Harper to be more comfortable around people
who she is not familiar with.

One of the ways that is explained is to have the
parent talk to the toddler when they are having
a tantrum/crying and explain to them how they
are feeling. The parent should also explain to
the toddler that they can use their words to
describe how they are feeling. “The First Years

This resource gives 10 different activities that
toddlers are able to do right in their home.
They are ways to help toddlers gross motor
development while doing things such as
bedtime, bathtime, and clean up. One idea that
is given is to have hula hoops to help motivate
your toddler to jump through them like a
circus. Since Harper is not yet able to jump with
both feet up and leaving the ground, this would
be a great way to start motivating her. There
are also other links that can be used to learn
about other activities that will strengthen gross
motor development.

Sensory Harper may soon be interested in painting and art. Let her paint
with her hands and feet and experience the textures in a more
exploratory way. Join in with Harper and show her the different
ways you can paint and create art. A great way to let her explore is
by giving her a free way to express herself.

Creative Expression When focusing on creative expression, it is important to

remember “process over product.” This means that you should let
Harper freely draw or paint what she chooses instead of giving her
things such as coloring sheets. A great way to promote process
over product is to give Harper finger paints so that she can create
what she wants. Product art isn’t going to come until later stages
of development.
