ADJECTIVE CLAUSE CONNECTORS

Adjective clause is a clause used to explain nouns. Adjective clause is used as an explanation of
the noun, then the adjective clause is placed after the number described.

Please look at the following sentence

The woman is filling the glass that is on the table. (ADJECTIVE CLAUSE)

There are two clauses in the example:

· woman is the subject of the verb is filling,

· that is the subject of the verb is.

These two clauses are joined with the connector that.

You should notice that in the sentence above, the word that serves two functions at the same
time:

· As the subject of the verb is,

· As the connector that joins the two clauses.

The adjective clause “that is on the table” describes the noun glass.

_______ is on the table has five chapters

A. in the book

B. because the book

C. the book

D. the book which

Opsi jawaban yang paling tepat untuk mengisi baris yang kosong pada contoh soal diatas adalah opsi
jawaban "the book which". Hal tersebut berdasar mengingat contoh soal diatas membutuhkan subject yang
harus diikuti dengan connector. The book merupakan subject dari has dan which merupakan connector yang
pada saat yang sama juga berfungsi sebagai subjectdari verb "is".
The job _____ started yesterday was rather difficult.
(A) when
(B) was
(C) after
(D) that he
Analisa:

The gift ____________ selected for the bride was rather expensive.
(A) because
(B) was
(C) since
(D) which we

Kalimat di atas mempunyai 2 klausa: gift merupakan subjek dan kata kerja was, dan kata
kerja ‘selected’ membutuhkan sebuah subjek. Karena ada dua 2 k!ausa maka dibutuhkan sebuah
connector. Jawaban (A) dan (C) terdapat connector, tapi tidak ada subjek. Jadi, bukan jawaban
tepat. Adapun jawaban (B) mengubah selected menjadi passsive. Jika memilih jawaban mi maka
subjek gift’ akan mempunyai dua subjek: was selected dan was. Jawaban mi tidak benar karena
terdapat dua verb, tapi tidak ada connector untuk menyambunçj keduanya. Dan segi makna sangat
jelas salahnya. Maka, jawaban yang benar adalah (D), which we. Which (konektor), we
(subjek). The gift which we selected for the bride was rather expensive. (Hadiah yang kita pilih
untuk pengantin perempuan agak mahal.)

______ just dropped off a package for you is my sister.

(A) The woman

(B) The woman who
(C) Because the woman
(D) With the woman

Analisa:

 Kalimat di atas memiliki dua Verb; dropped dan is, tapi belum memiliki subject.
 Jawaban yang paling tepat adalah (B) The woman who. Woman merupakan subject untuk verb is
dan who merupakan subject untuk verb dropped. Who also function as connector yang
menghubungkan kedua klause/kalimat tsb.

Example

The job _____ started yesterday was rather difficult.

(A) when
(B) was
(C) after
(D) that he

In this example, you should notice quickly that there are two clauses: job is the subject of the verb was, and the verb
started needs a subject. Because there are two clauses, a connector is also needed. Answers (A) and (C) have
connectors, but there are no subjects, so these answers are not correct. Answer (B) changes started into a passive
verb; in this case the sentence would have one subject and two verbs, so answer (B) is not correct. The best answer
to this question is answer (D). The correct sentence should say: The job that he started yesterday was rather difficult.
In this sentence job is the subject of the verb was, he is the subject of the verb started, and the connector that joins
these two clauses.
