A. COURSE DESCRIPTION

The course serves as a foundation (A1 level of the Common European Framework) for you to acquire
listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in French. It also introduces you to certain aspects of
French culture integrated in the use of the language thereby enabling you to become intercultural
agents with an awareness of the other and a deeper sense of self.

B. LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of the course, you should be able to:

1. Pronounce correctly French words, phrases and sentences.


2. Introduce and talk about yourself and others in French.
3. Recognize basic French words and phrases both in the written and oral forms.
4. Greet and use the polite form.
5. Handle a simple restaurant situation.
6. Describe a place.
7. Talk about the weather.
8. Tell the time, ask someone out and organize a meeting.

GRADE EQUIVALENT IN LETTERS:

94 - 100 = A 70 - 75 = C
88 - 93 = B+ 65 - 69 = D
82 - 87 = B 64 below = F
76 - 81 = C+

ORAL EXAM GRADE EQUIVALENT IN LETTERS:

15 = A
14 = B+
13 = B
12 = C+
11 = C
10 = D

H. CLASSROOM POLICIES:

 “Section E. Offenses Involving Dishonesty” under the Code of Discipline for Students in the
Student Handbook for undergraduate and graduate students
 Class begins on time.
 Students are marked absent when not in the proper seat when attendance is checked.
 No wearing of slippers and caps inside the classroom.
 Mobile phones should be turned off or put on silent mode in class. Each offense will merit
corresponding consequences.
 Laptops, iPads, iPods and any other electronic gadget may not be used in class.
 No eating and drinking.
 Leaving the classroom without permission during class hours is not tolerated.
 Twice tardy is a cut.
 Students receive a W after six (6) absences.
 It is the responsibility of the students to know the number of absences they have incurred
during the semester.
 Assignments are to be handed in on time. Late submission merits a deduction.
 Students are responsible for all subject matter taken in class when absent, whether excused or
unexcused.
 No make-up evaluation is given for missed scheduled or unscheduled written and/or oral
evaluations.
 Students, upon presentation of relevant documents, have the right to do make-up work in the
event that they cannot accomplish major requirements because of some grave reason or
because they are representing the school in an official capacity (such as in student seminars,
cultural performances, debates, athletic competitions, etc.) (cf. the Magna Carta of
Undergraduate Students’ Rights).

FINAL ORAL EXAM RULES:

 Be at designated venue10 minutes before your scheduled time.


 Please observe SILENCE while waiting.
 Enter designated venue only when called.
 Present your valid Ateneo I.D.
 Leave behind books, dictionaries, notebooks, review materials and all electronic gadgets.
 Loitering in and/or outside designated venue after your oral exam is strictly prohibited.
 Make a note of your oral exam schedule. You may not verify it at the Department.
 No make-up exam will be given.
 Non-compliance with these rules means an oral exam grade of F.
 Exam results will be distributed in class. Refrain from asking the Examiner / Department
Secretary.
 Oral exam grades are final and unappealable.
