Area

Area
The area of a figure is the amount of a surface it encloses or
covers. Regardless of a figure’s shape, it is customary to
measure its area in square units. In the United States, areas are
measured in customary square units (in2 , f t2 , yd2 or mi2 ). In
most other partes of the world, area is measured in metric
square units (mm2 , cm2 , m2 , km2 and so on)

Area

There are many ways to find the areas of figures

Count
In the figure, each square is 1 square centimeter. By counting
squares, you can see that rectangle ABCD has an area of 6 cm2 .

Area

Rearrange
You can cut and rearrange the parts of a figure to find its area.
When the figure is rearanged into the rectangle at the right, you
can see that its area is 6 cm2 .
Rules Area Activities Bibliography

Area
Use a formula
For a rectangle, multiply its dimensions. In the figure, one
dimension is 3 cm and the other is 2 cm, and 3cm·2 cm gives
and area of 6 cm2 .

Area examples

The shape is a rectangle, so, the formula that we need is

Area = b × h. Then

Area = b × h
= 6cm × 4cm
= 24cm2

Area examples

The shape is a triangle, so, the formula that we need is

Area = 12 b × h. Then
1
Area = b × h
2
1
= (4cm × 3cm)
2
1
= (12cm2 ) = 6cm2

The shape is a triangle, so, the formula that we need is

Area = 12 b × h. Then
1
Area = b × h
2
1
= (14m × 10m)
2
1
= (140m2 ) = 70m2

The shape is a rectangle, so, the formula that we need is

Area = b × h. Then
Area = b × h
= 4,5cm × 3,5cm = 15,75cm2

Area examples

The shape is a trapezium, so, the formula that we need is

Area = 12 (a + b) × h. Then
1
Area = (a + b) × h
2
1
= (7cm + 3cm) × 4cm
2
1
= (10cm) × 4cm
2
1
= (40cm2 ) = 20cm2

Washington, Kennedy and Lincoln Streets form the border of a
piece of land. Kennedy runs north and south, and Washington
runs east and west. So these two streets form a 90◦ angle. If the
legs of the right triangle formed by these three streets are 300
and 450 feet long, what is the area of the piece of land they
border?
