Essay

The lesson plan I chose to do was to read The Mixed Up Chameleon by Eric Carle

and ask them questions about what is going on in the story as I read it and what they
believe the theme of the story is. They were able to use their own creativity to color

their chameleons whatever color they wanted and write positive things about

themselves without feeling as though their peers would tell them they picked the

wrong color. I chose and created this lesson because I thought it would be an easy

way for the students to understand that it is a good thing to be different from their

peers. The students were very successful at completing this lesson because they are

already aware of social and emotional learning. Not many children understand this

concept, and I believe that it is very important for them to learn this at an early age.

The students in Mrs. Pacifico’s class are very accepting of one another and are not

judgemental of their peers. We have a student with special needs in our classroom

and he has a tendency to make loud noises or jump up and run away, but our class

does not judge him for being different and acting different, they treat him as if he is

the same as all of them which very positive because normally children their age will

allow something like to be used as an excuse to make fun of. The lesson was

successful because it taught them that it is good to be different from their other

classmates. They were able to use their own creativity and write unique things about

themselves which is an amazing thing to see children do at a young is and it makes

me happy to know that I am giving these children the concept of self confidence. This

activity not only helped them celebrate themselves, but it will help them learn that it is

a good thing to be different. If I could do this lesson over again, I would not change a

thing. I believe that the students enjoyed themselves while coloring and their self-

confidence was boosted as they shared their differences with one another. Doing this

lesson made me so happy to be a teaching figure.
