Brain
The center of the nervous system is the brain, which is
composed of the brainstem, the cerebellum, and the
cerebrum. The brainstem controls basic functions such
as breathing rate and heartbeat and it contains nerve
centers involved in hearing and vision.
The cerebellum controls balance, equilibrium, and
locomotion. The cerebrum regulates such mental
functions as understanding, remembering, speaking,
learning, reasoning, and feeling emotions.
Spinal cord
The spinal cord extends from the brain into the spine
through a canal encased in bone. The spinal cord is a
collection of nerve fibers and cells that carry sensory
impulses from the outer parts of the body up to the
brain. The brain responds by sending impulses down
through other nerve fibers in the spinal cord to stimulate
muscles that are under voluntary control.
