Passage
10. Amines are basic compounds. They act as Lewis base due to the presence of lone pair of
electrons at nitrogen.

R N: B F

H F
Lewis base Lewis acid
Amines also behave as Arrhenius base as well as Bronsted base
CH3―NH2 + HOH ⇌ CH3―NH+3 + OH–
CH3―NH2 + H+Cl– ⇌ CH3―NH+3 + Cl–
Basic character of amines depends on the factor like inductive effect, steric hindrance and
resonance. Alkyl groups and electron releasing groups hence these groups increase the electron
density at nitrogen as well as the basic character of amines. Basic character of tertiary amines is
reduce due to the steric hindrance of three alkyl groups. Experimentally it is observed that
stronger bases have smaller values of pKb (greater values of Kb).
