DEPARTMENTOF CIVIL ENGINEERING

THIRD INTERNAL EXAMINATION, MAY 2019
Course:Applied Hydraulics Course Code:17CV43 Semester :4
Maximum marks:30 Date:14-05-2019 Time:10.45am-11.45
Instruction: 1.Answer any three question 10x3=30
MARKS CO *
1 Derive an equation of force exerted by a jet on an unsymmetrical curved vane tangenially, when the 10 04 2
vane is moving in the x direction. Draw the velocity triangles and explain. Also find the work done
and efficiency.
2 Design a pelton wheel turbine required to develop 1471.5kW power under head of 160m at 10 04 4
420rpm.The overall efficiency may be taken as 85%.Assume cv=0.98,cu=0.46 and jet ratio=12
3 With a neat sketch explain Kaplan turbine. 10 04 2
4 A jet of water with velocity 40m/s strikes a curved vane , which is moving with velocity 20m/s.The 10 04 3
jet makes an angle of 30o with the direction of motion of vane at inlet and leaves at an angle of 90o to
the direction of motion of vane at outlet.Draw the velocity triangles at inlet and outlet and determine
the vane angles at inlet and outlet so that water enters and leaves the vane without shock
