Introduction to GPRS
• Packet based networked over existing circuit
switched GSM network.

• GPRS radio resources are used only when users

are actually sending or receiving data.

• Rather than dedicating a radio channel to a

mobile data user for a fixed period of time,

• the available radio resource can be concurrently

shared between several users.

• Brings desktop experience to wireless such as

web browsing and chat. 3/23/2018 GPRS 7
Services on GPRS
• E-mail
• File Transfer
• Shopping and ticket sales
• Banking and finance management
• News
• Web
• Traffic Information
• Stock prices

Services on GPRS
• Communications -Email, fax, intranet/ internet
access.

• Value added services -Information services,

games, ecommerce.

• Location-based applications - Navigation, traffic

conditions, airline/rail schedule, location finder.

Services on GPRS
• Vertical applications - Freight delivery, fleet
management, sales force automation.

• Location sensitive Advertising - A user nearing a

cinema hall or a restaurant receives flashes of
advertisement

Packet Control Unit (PCU)
• The PCU separates the circuit switched and packet
switched traffic.

• Performs radio resource management functions

of the GPRS.

• The PCU can be located at any point between the

MS and the MSC.

3/23/2018 GPRS 14
Channel Codec Unit (CCU)
• Realized in the BTS

• Performs channel coding,

• Including coding scheme algorithms,

• Power control and timing advance procedures.

3/23/2018 GPRS 15
Serving GPRS Support Node (SGSN)
• It is equivalent to MSC of the GSM network.

• Functions are Authentication, Authorization,

• Ciphering and compression

• Mobility management

• Session management

• Interaction with HLR, MSC/VLR

• Charging and Statistics 3/23/2018 GPRS 16

Gateway GPRS Support Node (GGSN)
• Interface to external data networks.

• Routes mobile originated packets to right

destination.

• Filters end user traffic.

• Collect charging and statistics information for data

network usage.

3/23/2018 GPRS 17
Domain Name Servers (DNS)
• These devices convert IP host names into IP
addresses.

• Firewalls: Protects an IP network against external

attack.

• The firewall can also include Network Address

Translation. (NAT)

• Border Gateway (BG): It is a router that can

provide a direct GPRS tunnel between different
operators of GPRS network.
