SEMINAR BRIEF

Title of the Seminar: Slipping Beauty

Topic: Biomolecular Catalysts: The Future of Enzymes in Cosmetics
Date and Time: April 23, 2019 10:30 AM – 12:00 NOON
Venue: Science Laboratory/ Classroom
Intended Participants: 42 Public School Teachers
Seminar Description:

We live in a world where there is danger from many sources- from sunlight, natural and
man-made pollutants, and from oxygen, the very element that keep us alive. We are beginning
to understand the mechanisms by which these dangers attack our skin. The skin, our largest
organ, is the first line of defense separating us from the outside world. Enzymes have recently
been of great interest to the cosmetic scientists, as they have a consumer appeal, mainly to
satisfy the ageing global population’s quest for a youthful appearance. At the heart of this
seminar is to educate the participants about the use of enzymes, specifically in the world’s
fastest growing industry, the cosmetics.

Objectives:

To inform participants about enzymes.

To engage participants on activities how enzyme works.
To apply the knowledge learned about enzymes from the classroom.

Curriculum Alignment:

Biomolecular Catalysts is aligned with the Senior High School Curriculum specifically in
Chemistry for Grade 11 which is a core subject.
