Argumentative

The title of this assignment was single sex schools. This assignment was completed in
Huntington Park Institute of Applied Medicine in Ms. Vanhills contemporary composition class.
I was asked to make an argument whether or not schools should allow same sex genders or just
single genders. This was an argumentative piece because I had to make an argument with
evidence to support my point of view which was single gender.
The SLO(s) I met was critical thinker. I thought deeply about the issue and read different
articles made about the issue. An articles example was, “Should boys and girls be taught
separately in our schools” by Ellie Mulcahy, she states, “Affo, leaders in Washington want to
separate boys and girls so they can get a better education.” This quote helped me decide and
defend my opinion by expressing why schools should separate boys and girls to help them stay
focused on learning. I also asked different people their opinion to why they agreed or disagreed
about the issue. This helped me to understand why people felt the way they did, for example,
when I asked the girls if they rather feel safe or have communication with boys they chose their
safety. I also saw the data that single sex schools have higher graduation rates.
I was a critical thinker because in my essay I had to examine and analyze the quotes that I
took from books, articles, and credible sources to support my claim. A second example is I had
to analyze and restate information from other sources into my own words. My last example is I
was able to prove my opinion on why single gender schools are better than an all gender school.
This assignment helped me work on the SLO(s) because it helped me be able to analyze
what I was reading. Something I still need to improve on is explaining in depth the quotes I got.
Also, I need to work on being an effective communicator because I get shy around people. This
skill can be used in the future in order for me to write argumentative essays once I get to college.
I will be able to gather information to support my claim.
