The Highball Family


A highball is a mixture of a spirit and a carbonated mixer or water, served with
ice in a highball glass. It is said to have gotten its name from the railroad signal
for ‘‘full speed ahead’’ used in the late 1800s: a ball raised high on a pole. Legend
has it that a St. Louis saloonkeeper invented the drink when his regular customers,
mostly railroad engineers, asked him to ‘‘lighten up’’ their drinks so they wouldn’t
get in trouble on the job. The resulting whiskey-and-water combination, served in
a tall glass, was probably speedy and satisfying enough, and has since become a
