CONCEPTS TO STUDY:
 NOUNS
-Proper: capital letter
-Abstract: something you can only think about, a concept
-Concrete: something you can see or touch
-Compound: 2 or more words put together as 1
-Collective: 1 word that means a bunch (or a collection) of
things

 PRONOUNS
-Relative : introduces a dependent clause
-Intensive : repeats subject, doesn’t have to be there
-Interrogative : asks a question
-Demonstrative : points something out: this, that, these, those

 THE ARTICLES
-What are they?
-What part of speech are they?

 IDENTIFYING THE PARTS OF SPEECH IN A SENTENCE


-Adjectives: describe a noun
-Nouns: person, place, thing, idea
-Pronouns: takes the place of a noun
-Interjections: express emotion
-Adverbs: describe verbs, adjectives, adverbs

 IDENTIFYING VERBS & VERB PHRASES


-Recognize helping verbs too !
 TRANSITIVE & INTRANSITIVE VERBS
-“The verb what?” If answer = Transitive, If no answer =
Intransitive
 ACTION & LINKING VERBS
-“Is the subject doing the verb?” If yes = Action, If no =
Linking

 RECOGNIZING ADVERBS IN A SENTENCE AND THE WORDS


THEY MODIFY
-Adverbs: usually end in “ly”, but not always
-Words they modify/describe: verbs, adjectives, other adverbs

 RECOGNIZING THE TYPES OF PHRASES


-Prepositional: starts with a preposition, has an object
be able to recognize the object of the preposition:
this will be a Noun
-Appositive: Noun beside a Noun
-Infinitive: starts with “to”
-Gerund: ing, noun
-Participial: acts as an Adjective

 CONJUNCTIONS
-Coordinating: FANBOYS- for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so
-Subordinating: start a dependent clause; since, if, when,
because, although, etc.
-Correlating: 2 (or more) conjunctions working together in a
sentence; either/or, neither/nor, not only/but also

 IDEPENDENT & DEPENDENT CLAUSES


-Independent: subject, verb, complete thought, CAN stand
alone
-Dependent: subject, verb, CANNOT stand alone

 SENTENCE STRUCTURES
-Simple: 1 independent clause
-Compound: 2 independent clauses, joined by a FANBOY
-Complex: 1 independent clause, 1 dependent clause (at
least)
-Compound-Complex: 2 (or more) independent clauses, 1 (or
more) dependent clause
