Description
Can a failure of the yellow pressure switch FIN 3151GN lead to a loss of Nose Wheel Steering
System?

Solution
On A319/A320/A321 aircraft post-mod 31152 & A318, failure of the yellow pressure switch FIN
3151GN (fails to indicate "high" pressure) causes the signal "NOSE WHEEL STEERING INOP" to be
output by the BSCU. This signal is received by the SDACs which in turn output it to the FWCs (see
extract from ESLD).

1/ As far as the E/W 'WHEEL N/W STRG FAULT' is concerned, normally inhibited in case
of permanent switch failure (loss of NWS displayed on INOP SYS page only), it could be displayed on
the upper ECAM DU, hence be shown to exist in the PFR, if the information given by the pressure
switch is fluctuating between LO and HIGH pressure (intermittent switch failure).

2/ Regarding the NWS function, even if the yellow hydraulic pressure is available a failure of the
pressure switch 3151GN causes the loss of the NWS function. This is a reversible failure meaning
that:
- pressure switch failure = loss of NWS function
- disappearance of failure = NWS function restored without action

The issue could come from the switch itself or somewhere on the wiring between the switch and the
BSCU.

Note1: The opposite failure mode could also be at the origin of a steering system issue, meaning that
if the BSCU receive the YP=1 information whereas yellow hydraulic pressure is not yet established (at
engine start, for example) and if a steering angle is commanded at that time, a failure may be triggered
by the BSCU leading to steering function loss.

Note2: For your information, the same issue could occur on A319/A320/A321 aircraft pre-Mod 31152 if
the signal coming from the Green Pressure switch 1151GN is erroneous (instead of Yellow Pressure
switch on post-Mod 31152 aircraft).
This is simply due to the fact that:
- on pre-Mod 31152 aircraft, the steering system is supplied by the Green Hydraulic System.
- on post-Mod 31152 aircraft, the steering system is supplied by the Yellow Hydraulic System.
