3rd Grade Mississippi Academic Assessment Program (MAAP)
English Language Arts (ELA) Assessment Results Overview Explanation

Standard Setting Validation and Cut Score Explanation

The 3rd Grade MAAP ELA Assessment sub-score will consist exclusively of the operational
reading and language items from the 3rd Grade MAAP ELA Assessment (reading literature,
reading for information, and language). The maximum possible raw score is 48 points, which is
fewer points than the 3rd Grade MAAP ELA Assessment because the ELA test also includes
writing tasks.

The standards validation was necessary because a new assessment was administered for the first
time in 2015–2016. Reading and language items from the 3rd Grade MAAP ELA Assessment is
being used to meet the requirements of the Mississippi Literacy-Based Promotion Act (LBPA)
(Miss. Code Ann. § 37-177-1 et seq.) creating the need for a review of the Performance Level 2
and Performance Level 3 cut scores.

A cut score determines which category students’ results apply:

• Not Met (i.e., does not meet the readiness requirement)
• Met (i.e., meets the readiness requirement)

Two (2) passing standards were determined:

• Performance Level 2 was established as the initial required score for the 3rd Grade MAAP
ELA assessment in school years 2016-2017 and 2017-2018.
• Performance Level 3 was established for use when the law required a more rigorous score
in school year 2018-2019.

Performance Level Descriptors

minimal understanding of the following skills:

• apply phonetic analysis to decode unknown words;
