Project 1: Personal Prescription Paper Final

I. Self-Assessment
According to my self-assessment I am healthy in some aspects however there are a few
things I need to improve on. Before taking the assessment I thought I was healthy and I was
surprised to see that I needed to improve on my environmental health since I do buy most of my
products organic. But I wasn’t surprise that I needed to improve my emotional and social health
because I been working on this for some time now. One that I want to work on the most and first
is my emotional health since it is really important. I believe that in order to be healthy in other
aspects of your focus on improving your emotional and mental health first because it a big part
of yourself that contributes to what you want to do and how it makes you feel.

II. Ways to Improve or Maintain My Current Health

Physical Health: 18/20
The book defines this dimension as the person's overall physical and physiological health.
Medically I am overweight and the books definition for this dimension also includes “features
like the shape and size of” (Donatelle, n.d.) one’s body. In my opinion losing weight is
something that I need to change but one of the reasons why I scored low on physical health is
because sometimes I tend to over criticize my size and not be happy with my body and weight.
However I am healthy physiologically because I hardly get sick and when I do I recover very
quickly. I am very active which helps me “perform activities of daily living” (Donatelle, n.d.)
and one thing that I am maintaining is my constancy of exercise. Therefore, I would need to
improve the way that I look at myself and build my self-esteem.
Social Health: 18/20
Social wellness is the ability to develop and maintain positive, respectful, and meaningful
relationships with others (“The six dimensions of wellness”, n.d). In my self-assessment the
reason why I scored low was because I sometimes I participate in “meaningful relationships with
others” and I find it difficult to control or manage my negative emotions. In order to “develop
and maintain” my social health I will need to improve in having a more positive outlook in
gatherings. One way to do so is talking more when I am with a group of friends and expanding
my circle of friends. Another way to improve is by being a “better person” as the book says and
by decreasing “behaviors that have caused problems in my interactions with others” (Donatelle,
n.d.).
Emotional Health: 17/20
I knew that when taking the assessment for emotional health I was going to score low
however, I’ve been working really hard in improving my emotional state that I was a bit thrown
back to see that the things that I scored low are the ones I thought I was improving. One of the
websites states that emotional wellness is about feeling good about one’s self, being able to
recognize, accept, understand and constructively share feelings (including love, hope, sadness,
fear, and anger) and having the skills to cope with the challenges that life brings (“The six
dimensions of wellness”, n.d.). Some ways that I can improve my emotional wellness is sharing
my emotions with someone that I am close and expressing what I feel instead of bottling up all
the negativity and sometimes positive emotions.
Environmental Health: 16/20
According to the article Dimensions of wellness: Change your habits, change your life by
Debbie explains that the environmental dimension is “understanding how your social, natural,
and built environments affect your health and well-being”. The reasons why I scored lower on
environmental from all the dimensions, despite having and buying organic products is because I
am not well-informed of what other changes I can do and understand why it is important to make
those changes. One way to improve my environmental health is doing research in how doing
these changes will not only benefit my health but also the health of others and the planet.

III. Importance in Sustaining a Healthy Lifestyle

In order to fully understand why it is important to sustain a healthy lifestyle is by defining three
important words here. What does sustain mean? Sustain is something that you do continuously,
it’s not something you do for a short period of time. Now, what is health? The book defines it
this way, “health is a process, not something we just ‘get’”. What about lifestyle?
Dictionary.com explains, “the habits, attitudes, tastes, moral standards, economic level, etc., that
together constitute the mode of living of an individual”. These three simple words have a greater
meaning that defines our way us as individuals. Therefore, it is important for me to sustain a
healthy lifestyle because it is a continuous process that will change and improve my health
everyday because I am constantly learning more about myself. Not only will I strengthen my
emotional and physical health but also my immune system in which I will decrease the amount
of times I get sick. I will become more active physically and better informed for healthier eating
habits. I will become more aware of the changes that needs to be done on myself and accept the
fact that changes need to be done. It becomes easier for me to sustain a healthier lifestyle when I
am informed and create a continuous process that is easy yet challenging for me to do.

IV. 3 Goals to Improve a Healthy Lifestyle

1. Emotional Goals:
One of my goals for emotional wellness is to not let negativity ruin my perspective and day by
learning a calming technique. Since I have anger issues I tend to let my emotions take control
over what I saw, choose, or do. This will help me have more control over my anger and/or other
emotions. Another goal is to accept my emotions, sometimes I don’t want to accept that I am
feeling sad or mad. Doing so will help me express myself freely and build my self-esteem.
2. Physical Goals:
My goals for physical wellness is to build strength and endurance. One way to do this is by
exercising four times a week, three days is focusing on weights and one day on cardio. Along
with eating healthier to gain muscle and increase my energy along with losing body fat. It will be
a long journey for I am overweight however, making small goals to accomplish a big one will
help stay focus and not get discouraged easily.
3. Social Goals:
One way for my to be more social is by engaging in conversations with people in big groups. I
tend to isolate myself when there is a lot of people, in contrast to when I am in a small group. I
am also going to start expanding my circle of friends. By finding common grounds or by taking
interest in different things I don’t normally listen to, do, or eat.

V. Overall Conclusion
In conclusion, health is a process that we need to continue improve, change, and learn about
every day. Chapter one has helped me understand why it is important to know and understand
my behavior and how this not only affects me but others as well. I now know more about the
importance of the six dimensions and they interconnect with each other and contribute to my
health. Chapter two helped me identify any other changes I will be doing psychologically and
helped me understand why it is important to assess my mental health. Studying these two
chapters made me realize that there is more I need to work on and that this is a process that is
done everyday not weekly or monthly.
