 Esophagus
 Stomach
 Small and large intestines
 Digestion process
 Healthful habits that promote the proper functioning of Digestive system

D. Concepts:

DIGESTIVE SYSTEM

 Digestive System – The process by which large molecules of food are charged
into simpler molecules to be absorbed by the body. It Is responsible for
simplifying macromolecules of fats, proteins and carbohydrates.
TWO PHASES OF DIGESTIVE SYSTEM

MECHANICAL PHASE CHEMICAL PHASE

 The food is broken down into  Involves the change from

small pieces, mixed with complex molecules of proteins,
enzymes and goes down to the carbohydrates and fats into the
digestive tube. simpler form of molecules.
 Teeth, tongue, Saliva.  Amino acids – Products of
 Peristalsis – it pushes the food protein digestion
down to digestive tube.  Fatty Acids/glycerol – Products
of fat digestion
 Simple sugars- products of
carbohydrates digestion

Alimentary Canal – The food passes through a long tube like canal.

PARTS OF THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM

1. Mouth – Digestion starts here.

 Teeth – food is broken down in pieces
 Tongue – Helps in chewing and churning the food, pushes the food to the back of
the mouth. Tells you the taste of the food
 Saliva – makes swallowing easier

2. Esophagus – Carries the food from the mouth to the stomach.

3. Stomach – Is a large pear shaped organ at the end of the esophagus or less on the left
side of the body. It can store about 3 ½ to 4 pints of food for about hours.
4. Small intestine - Is the absorption of nutrients and minerals from food, using small finger-
like protrusions called villi.
5. Large intestine – The undigested food goes down here. This is the final stage of
digestion.
6. Pancreas – Produce hormones that regulate the homeostasis of blood glucose. It also
produce pancreatic juice which helps neutralize acid in stomach.
7. Liver – Produces fluid called bile which acids in digestion of fats and lipids.
Healthful habits that promotes proper functioning of the Digestive system:

1. Make sure that your hands and the utensils you use are clean.
2. You should always wash fruits/vegetables first under running water before eating them.
3. Always drink clean water.
