NERVOUS SYSTEM
Nervous system – The system that receives information from your environment
and controls how you react. It is the communication network and control center of
the body.
Brain stem
Cerebellum
- Is the unconscious motor coordinator center of the brain responding to
reflexes.
- It helps in balancing the body whether it is standing, walking or lying down.
Cerebrum
- The largest part of the brain.
- Each hemisphere has four parts or lobes (frontal, parietal, temporal, occipital
lobes)
Gray matter – is a major component of the central nervous system consisting of
nerve cells, dendrites, axons and supporting cells which are known as neuroglia.
It is known as the cerebral cortex.
2. Spinal Cord
- Is a long, cylindrical mass of nerve tissues that passes through the spinal
canal.
Funiculi – distinct bundles of nerve fibers that form columns
Anterior – the nerve fibers in front
Lateral – nerves at the side
Posterior – nerves at the back.
Meninges – Provide a framework that supports and protects the brain and spinal cord.
Pia mater – serves as a supporting cover for the brain and spinal cord and also
carries the blood vessels that supply the outer surfaces of these two areas.
Arachnoid membrane – acts as a cushion that protects the brain and spinal cord
from injury.
Durameter – its inner layer forms a partition that dips between the larger
subdivision of the brain.
3. Nerves
- The basic unit of nervous system.
Myelin – fatty substance that cover some neurons, this helps make the signal
travel faster.
Synapse – tiny saps between neurons
