About the Peoples College of Law

The Peoples College of Law is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit law school which exists to bring
legal resources to under-represented communities and to train legal advocates
dedicated to securing progressive social change and social justice. PCL was founded in
1974 under the name The Guild Law School by the National Lawyers Guild, La Raza
National Students Association, the Asian Law Collective, and the National Conference
of Black Lawyers.
The school is governed by a Board of Directors and operated largely by committees.
The Board and the committees are made up of students, faculty, alumni and other
members of the PCL Community. The Board of directors manages the school’s affairs,
makes the major decisions regarding operations, and delegates tasks to the
administrator and committees. The committees are the heart and soul of the school’s
operations. There are currently seven committees: Admissions and Recruitment;
Building, Accountability, and Library; Communications and Outreach; Development and
Fundraising; Executive; Faculty and Curriculum; and Finance. There are yearly
elections of members of the Board.

Certain critical issues are discussed and acted upon in Membership Meetings open to
all members of the PCL Community. Members are students, faculty, alumni, members of
the Board of Directors, and others who have been elected by the Board as community
members. Through participation of Community Members on the Board, in committees,
and in the Membership Meetings, PCL practices the principles of democracy.
