ABSTRACT

Namoco, Vanessa Joyce S., “THE INFLUENCE OF LANGUAGE OF INSTRUCTION
TO THE MATHEMATICS PERFORMANCE OF THE GRADE VIII QUEZON
STUDENTS” Undergraduate Thesis. Mindanao State University-Buug Campus. April

Language play an important role in human lives especially in education, for this
“Language of Instruction’’ would greatly affect the student’s performance. In this study,
the participants were the Grade VIII Quezon students. To determine the influence of
language of instruction to the Mathematics performance of the participants, one of the
researchers conducted two separate classes, one of which usedbilingualism (mother
tongues and English) as a language of instruction and the other one is a class which used
English only as a language of instruction. After a thorough investigation, using t-test the
researchers came out with the following conclusions:

(1) the Mathematics performance of the students under the class using
bilingualism (mother tongue and English) as a language of instruction and the class using
English only as a language of instruction, based in pre-test result showed “high
performance” and also showed “high performance” based on the post test result.

(2) there is highly significant increase in the Mathematics performance of the

students both under the class using bilingualism (mother tongue and English) as a
language of instruction and the class using English only as a language of instruction
based on the pre-test and post test result,

(3) there is no significant difference on the Mathematics performance of the

students under the class using bilingualism (mother tongue and English) as a language of
instruction and the class using English only as a language of instruction.

Keywords: language of instruction English, mother tongue, mathematics
