𝑘

𝑤−𝑣+𝑏

35) D: [-2,2] R: [-2,2] Not a function
36) D: (−∞, ∞) R: [−1, ∞) Yes it is a function
37) D: (−∞, ∞) R: [2, ∞) Yes it is a function
38) D: [-8,2] R: [-5, 8] Yes it is a function
39) Yes, this is a function because it passes the Vertical Line test. There is only one output (height above
ground) for every one input (distance along track).

The function is continuous because all points along the curve are connected, and the domain is an
interval of x values instead of discrete, single x values (like counting numbers). The function is also
continuous because distance along a track and height above ground can take on decimal values, not
just counting numbers of distance or height.

Y-intercept point: (0, 10) Relative Maximum: (800, 90)

Absolute Maximum: (250, 110) Relative Minimum: (550,30)

Absolute Min: (1250,10) or (0,10) Domain: [0, 1250] Range: [10,110]

Interpret in context what happens at the point (250, 110). “When the rollercoaster is 250 feet
along the track, it Is 110 feet high in the air (the highest point that the rollercoaster reaches!).

40) Formula for slope: 𝑚 = !! !!!
! !

51) a) 𝑓 𝑥 = 4𝑥 b) c)

d) The slope is 4. This means that for every one piece of wood purchased, Joe’s total cost to build the treehouse
increases by $4.

e) The y-intercept is (0,0). The means that 0 pieces of wood cost $0.

f) $200

52) 𝑓 𝑥 = 15.75𝑥 + 25

53) 𝑦 − 32 = 4.95 𝑥 − 5 → 𝑦 = 4.95𝑥 + 7.25

! !
54) points: (800,975) & (1100,1125) à slope: 1/7 à 𝑦 − 975 = ! 𝑥 − 800 → 𝑦 = ! 𝑥 + 860.714

𝑥 + 𝑦 = 300
55)
2𝑥 + 3𝑦 = 190

𝑥 + 𝑦 = 10
56) à (3,7)
2𝑥 + 𝑦 = 13

𝑥 + 𝑦 > 10
57) 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒 𝑥 = #𝑜𝑓 𝑝𝑎𝑖𝑟𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑏𝑜𝑜𝑡𝑠 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑦 = # 𝑝𝑎𝑖𝑟𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑔𝑙𝑜𝑣𝑒𝑠
80𝑥 + 20𝑦 ≤ 160

𝑥 ≥ 10
58) 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒 𝑥 = #𝑜𝑓 𝑏𝑎𝑔𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑐ℎ𝑖𝑝𝑠 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑦 = # 𝑜𝑓 𝑡𝑢𝑏𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑔𝑢𝑎𝑐𝑎𝑚𝑜𝑙𝑒
3.5𝑥 + 5𝑦 ≤ 45

59) 𝑓 𝑥 = 30,000(0.85)! → 𝑓 10 = $5906.23’

60) ) 𝑓 𝑥 = 10,000(1.048)! → 𝑓 4 = $12,062.72

61) a) x-intercepts: (-1,0) and (4,0)

b) vertex: (1.5, -6.25)

c) y-intercept: (0, -4) Concavity: Concave Up

Write the standard form for a general quadratic function, f(x):

𝑓 𝑥 = 1(𝑥 − 1.5)! − 6.25 First write the equation in Vertex Form
𝑓 𝑥 = 1(𝑥 − 1.5)(𝑥 − 1.5) − 6.25 Expand squared binomial
!
𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑥 − 3𝑥 + 2.25 − 6.25 Simplify
!
𝑓 𝑥 = 𝑥 − 3𝑥 − 4 Standard Form (Answer)

62) A fountain at a city park shoots a stream of water vertically from the ground. The function ℎ 𝑡 = −16𝑡 ! +
16𝑥 models the height of the stream of water after x seconds.

a) At what time does the stream of water reach its maximum height?

!! !(!") !
𝑡 = !! = !(!!") = ! The water reaches its maximum height after 0.5 seconds.

b) What is the maximum height of the water?

ℎ 1.5 = −16 0.5 ! + 16 0.5 = 4 The water’s maximum height is 4 feet.

c) For how many seconds does the stream of water appear above the ground?

The water appears above the ground for 1 second. You can get this by graphing the function and looking at
the graph to estimate the x-intercept, or by quadratic formula, or easier/faster by factoring, but logically by
doubling 0.5 seconds to get 1 second (you can only do this if the other root is (0,0).

d) Identify a reasonable domain and range: Domain: [0,1] and Range: [0,4]
