4. PROCEDURES

4.1 PREPARATION

1) Install a dog collar on the kelly scabbard approximately 6 feet from the top end.

2) Fix the correct jaws to the rig tongs.

3) Remove the mousehole and cover the gap.

4) A toolbox talk is held. Take off any elevators.

5) Lower the blocks to their lowest extent. Remove the bailes and lock the block
so as the hook faces the 'V' door.
(Note: Care required when removing the bails, refer to the lifting plan.).

6) Open the hook.

(R)

4.2 PERFORMANCE

PICK UP AND MAKING UP THE SWIVEL ASSEMBLY

THE FULL DRILL CREW IS REQUIRED

1) Swing the swivel onto the rig floor using the crane.

2) Ensure that the block baile support is facing downwards.

3) Sling the swivel using the tuggers so that it will pick up flat. (Remember that
due to the use of two winches on one load, a separate lifting plan is required.)

4) Now raise the swivel to the height of the open hook and guide the swivel baile
into the hook recess. (Note: This will require careful planning and rigging to
ensure the stability of the swivel)

5) Raise the blocks slowly and gradually allow the swivel to be supported by the
blocks. (The hook should close.)

6) Take the tuggers off.

7) Place the double pin sub on the table and make up into the swivel.

8) Tighten up with chain tongs.

9) Raise the block clear of the table.

10) Remove the table cover.

11) Place the kelly spinner in the table (it may be necessary to level it up with some
dunnage). (Refer to the lifting plan. Ensure the stability of the kelly spinner)

12) Lower the blocks.

13) Make up the spinner chain tong tight.

14) Raise the blocks and replace the hole cover.

15) Place the upper kelly cock on the table and make up onto spinner chain tong
tight.

16) Ensure there are no obvious gaps between joints.

17) Scroll mark each joint that is only chain tight, use a distinct mark. (Paint or
crayon a high profile colour.)

PICKING UP THE KELLY

PREPARATION

Sling the scabbard so that it picks up level with the crane. Install tag lines.
Install a dog collar on the scabbard ± 6 from the front.

1) With the crane swing the kelly and scabbard into the 'V' door. Level it off ± 3
feet above the floor. (Refer to the lifting plan)

2) Attach one tugger below the dog collar and take up the slack.

3) Install lifting cap into box connection of kelly. Pull the kelly from the scabbard
by approx. 1' to 2' to further expose box connection. (Utilise the Drawworks
Cathead make up chain to slowly ease out the kelly from the scabbard.)

4) Loop a sling round the lower section of the kelly spinner and attach a tugger.

PERFORMING

1) Slowly pick up with the tugger in conjunction with lowering the blocks.
This will bring the swivel assembly into approximate line with the kelly.
(NOTE: It may be necessary to manoeuvre either or both to guide the line up.

2) Once lined up insert the pin into the box and make up chain tong tight. remove
the tugger from the

CONTINUING

3) Inspect all other joints for integrity. (If sound - OK, if not - tighten.)

4) Start to raise the blocks slowly and at the same time lower the scabbard
with the crane until scabbard comes to rest on the catwalk. Stop the
blocks (keep the tension on the tugger). (Note: Refer to the lifting plan).

5) Remove the crane slings.

6) Install a rope across the 'V' door to tail the kelly and remove the mousehole
cover.

7) Pick up with the blocks and the tugger moving at the same rate so that the
scabbard keeps its position relative to the kelly.

(Place men at vantage points to observe for any obstructions to movement

and any movement at the scroll marks.)

8) Once the scabbard clears the top of the 'V' door stop the lifting.

9) Tail the kelly and scabbard until they are over the mousehole.

10) Lower the blocks and the tugger in conjunction until the scabbard is ± 1 foot
above the decking or the dog collar lands out.

11) Raise the blocks and pull the kelly from the scabbard then stand it to one side.

12) Lay out the scabbard and replace the mousehole cover.

PICKING UP THE BUSHINGS

1) Pick up the bushing assembly and place in the table. (Ensure the pins are
located.)

2) Undo the hold down nuts and shackle a sling across the top plate.

3) Raise the blocks until the kelly is above the bushings. (Check all scroll marks
prior to next step.)

4) Use a tugger to lift the housing plate off the bushing and guide in onto the
kelly.

CORMORANT ALPHA DRILLING OPERATIONS GUIDE

Raise it ± 10 feet and apply the tugger brake. (A man must remain on this
tugger monitoring it at all times.)

5) Remove the rollers and check the wiper rubber. (Change out if necessary.)

6) Lower the kelly into the bushings until the hexagonal faces are opposite the
roller's positions.

7) Replace the rollers.

8) Lower the top plate, secure and remove the sling. (Ensure correct make up
torque is applied to retaining nuts.)

MAKING UP THE JOINTS

1) It is necessary to lower the kelly until it virtually bottoms out in order to gain
access to the joints. Permitry may be required to allow this.

2) If it is unavailable, rack the kelly back until this is available. Place notices to
the effect that the joints are not fully made up.

3) With the kelly down, use the rig tongs to apply torque. (These joints are left
hand thread.) Because of the lack of weight below the bushings use a tugger
run through a snatch block anchored at the 'V' door to counteract any bending
caused when torque is being applied.

(R) If the bending and the movement of the bottom of the kelly is excessive only
snub up the joints with the tongs, i.e. 3 - 4000 ft/lbs. Full torque is to be
applied when the BHA can be suspended below the kelly.

SIGNS TO BE TIED TO SWIVEL ASSY. INDICATING 'LOOSE

CONNECTIONS' AND RECORDED IN HANDOVER LOGS.

5. ON COMPLETION

GREASE ALL ROLLERS ON COMPLETION

1) Hook up the spinner's turnbuckles and hoses. Check the direction, hook up the
kelly hose and install safety chains.

2) Pull the kelly and install the lower kelly cock and saver sub.

3) Pressure test to standard.

4) Slowly lower the kelly assembly until bottom of kelly is 1' above skid
deck.

Remove rig tongs.

THOROUGHLY CLEAN OFF ALL OLD SCRIBE MARKS, AND

'RE-SCRIBE' ACROSS ALL CONNECTIONS IN PAINT OR
CRAYON IN A HIGH PROFILE COLOUR.

5) Pick up kelly assembly clear of rotary table and install rotary table hatch
cover.

6) Rack back kelly assembly as per D.O.G.'s instructions.

FOOTNOTE

The 4 1/2" IF right hand connection lower kellycock and saver sub will be installed in
conjunction with the making up of the first bottom hole assembly utilising the rig
tongs.

When the lower kellycock and saver sub have been installed into the top of the BHA,
the kelly assy. will be picked up out of the rathole and made up to the kellycock
connection.

'THE KELLY ASSY. WILL THEN BE LOWERED DOWN TO THE ROTARY

TABLE AND THE LEFT HAND THREADS ON THE ASSY. WILL BE MADE
UP TO FULL TORQUE.'

The benefit of installing the subs at this point is that the additional weight required to
hold the kelly in tension while applying the full make up torque is provided. In
addition while making up the right hand thread connection of the kelly into the
connection situated in the rotary table, this in effect will tighten the left hand threaded
connections situated at the swivel.
