Although you have so many imperfections,

being born here will still lead me in the right directions
The weather can change up so quickly
Some days it will be hot, some will be chilly
Getting accustomed to this weather can be quite tricky
Despite the broken glass, all of that is irrelevant to me
The streets are so crowded,
It’s so hard getting around
There is so much traffic, causing all this havoc
People tend to rent
So finding parking can be such a discontent

Streets are filled with violence
Can I go a day with simply silence?
This just ruins our city’s reputation
I just want to get out of this place and take a vacation
Hearing the loud BOOM! of the gun,
Makes me jump out of my bed and run

You have a place in my heart that I will forever hold.
Although you are 8,211 miles away from my heart,
And loving you makes me feel very bold.

There was a time where I visited you when I was only eight years old,
And then it was nine years since we apart.

But when I was there, I would miss the weather at home that was very cold.
I wish I lived there so every event I can take part.

All of my relatives there are getting old,

But that’s what life imparts.

You Are The Sunshine On My Darkest Days (Ode)

November 17, 2014 was when my life changed for the better
On this day, I was dedicated to watch over your spiritual upbringing
But it really got me thinking,
I need to improve my ways to be the best that I can be for you

If only I can stop time from ticking,

Unfortunately that can’t be done from the very beginning
It felt like yesterday you were just a baby,
Now you’re making me feel like I’m so old lately
Moments spent with you I will forever treasure greatly

You have grown to be such a kind-hearted soul.

Whenever you see people down,
You are there to console.
You make people smile bigger than ever,
Even the ones that say they would never

There was a point when I wanted to give up,

But it felt as if you were beside me
Telling me otherwise.
You are the sunshine on my darkest days
Pushing me to constantly persevere and better myself

Everytime I see you,

You always scream my name and run up to me
With a huge grin on your face as far as the eye can see.
I have so many ways to appreciate you
I hope you feel the same way too.
Poet’s Statement
The background in which led me to write about the poems that I did were some aspects
in my life that are very important to me. First and foremost, “All Your Perfect Imperfections”
was written about Chicago, which is where I was born and raised in. I observed the many flaws
of the city, but I will accept it for what it is no matter what. The poem “8,211 Miles” is about
the Philippines, where my parents originated from, and it is a place that I keep near and dear to
my heart. Lastly, “You Are The Sunshine On My Darkest Days” is about my experience of being a
Godmother that forever changed my life and my being. The method that I took to come up with
these topics was to first think of what I can write deeply about. Then, I used some poet’s poetry
examples to inspire the structure in which I developed all three of my poems. The purpose of
these topics is to show the real me and so people can learn more about something they may
not know about me. I am not a fan of writing poetry, but this experience was pretty fun.
