CHAPTER 8: Intercultural Relationships (pg.165)

KEY TERMS:

 Antimiscegenation laws. This is basically a law made to prohibit two

people from different races to be involved in an intimate or non-intimate
relationship and engagement. This made them criminals and law breakers.
The people from different races were segregated from each other.

 Ascribed identities. These are the identities attributed, assigned and

labeled by others. This means the majority do give their own labels and
designation based on their races, gender, sex and other cultural identities
aspect. Their cultural identities will be based from what the environment and
the society labeled them to be.

 Avowed identities. These pertains to the cultural identities that a person

or an individual intuitively ratifies using a certain perspective. It means that
their identities are based from what they perceived to be their cultural
relationship and identities. It can be based from their environment it can
also be based from what they are taught or based from what they have
observed.

 Body politics. This term pertains to the races of people who are going to
be involved in a political organization or event. This is associated with the
citizenship as well as the political views and ideas of the people. In a country
where “whites” are majority, other races or gender will not be given the
same treatment and advancement in politics unlike others who are different
from them.

 Color-blind ideology. This is believed to be the blindness of people

regarding the race or color of their partners and also the people whom they
socialize. It is an ideology that pertains to the understanding and
appreciating of each other regardless of their race or skin color.

 Democratization. This pertains to the independence that everyone can feel

and experience. This is where people do understand each other and each
other’s differences but still, they respect each other. They have their free
will in this kind of society. Everyone can freely move and do whatever they
wanted to do given the fact that they do not forbid any law.

 Differential racialization. As stated by Bonilla-Silva (1996), races are

named, marked and stigmatized. This means that some of the races present
in a certain society is named and sometimes given a bad look or bad
impression. This can be in both black and white races. It will be more visible
in a relationship that differs in races. People in a relationship that has
different races can be shamed and publicly criticized especially now that
people are very reliant to the mobile society. It is also considered as
dangerous because of the danger that many people can give bad
interpretation to it.

 Intercultural alliance. People with different cultures are encouraged to be

allied with each other and work as one. This alliance is committed to inspire,
encourage, expand and enhance peace building society for women and
children while working with each other for a peaceful society for everyone.
This only means that there is an alliance or a group that encourages people
to give each other the benefit of peacefully living in our society.

 Intercultural praxis. It is a relationship practice that leads to social justice.

This is a practice wherein both people that belongs to a different culture but
tied through their relationship is able to critically understand each other’s
opinion and point view. They both reflect on their culture as well as their
partner’s culture for them to be able to understand each other’s identity as
well as their opinions and point of view.

 Reflexivity. It is a circular relationship wherein people can sometimes have

different and contradicting culture and identifications. It can either impact
them or affect each other as well as their relationship with the people on the
society. Their differences in opinions and positionalities can bring them
together or make them apart. It is a challenging relationship because it can
lead to peace or war, not literary, but emotionally and mentally.

 Whiteness. As termed and defined by Frankenburg (1993), it is a socially

constructed location of racial privilege. As seen socially, most of the
privilege is given to the people who are considered as whites. They are
given the privilege in so many things in the society and they are not
experiencing discrimination racially because people are looking at them
highly.
