Abstract

Reinforced cement concrete (RCC) frame structures are one of the most common type of
structural system used for construction of buildings in regions prone to high seismic risk due
to inherent earthquake resistance property. However, there is still a lack in understanding of
modeling techniques, input parameters & results interpretation using available conventional
software. In the present study series of regular three-dimensional (3D) RCC frame structures
are studied numerically using finite element (FE) technique. The influence on structural
parameters (like natural time-period, base shear, lateral displacement, etc.) considering the
effect of stiffness of slab, in-plane stiffness of masonry infill walls & the reduction of
moment of inertia of beams & columns are reported. The seismic analysis is carried out using
Linear Static Analysis, Linear Dynamic Analysis & Modal Time History Analysis. It is
observed that, these parameters affect the response of RC frame significantly. The outcome
of the study are as follows:

a) In calculation of the response of structure with reduction in moment of inertia of

beams & columns as recommended by the latest building design code, the stiffness of
walls should always be considered in analysis.

b) The building design code should incorporate the clause for mandatory consideration
of the stiffness of the slab in analysis.

c) The empirical equations to calculate the approximate time-period of the building

given in latest building design code should be updated. The code should also
recommend the use of time-period of the structure calculated using the modal analysis
rather than using empirical equations.
