1. Engineering Problems/ Opportunity being addressed:

PROJECT 1:

Problems:

The normal day to day operations in a carriage workshop of Indian Railways includes
assessment and quality check of different materials used in a passenger
coach/engine,maintenance of the coaches ,management of the material ,safety check
up of different equipments like cross V-belt,alternators,batteries,lights,fans,and other
electrical equipments.General problems incurred during such operations include
unbalance of operating voltage of cocah,non-usage of proper rating devices, loose
insulation in cables/junction boxes, overheating in case of overload, worn out PVC
brushes, faults in V-belts,improper gauge readings, extremities like breakage of fire in
the workshop/coach,faulty condensor or compressor in the Refrigeration and cooling
section, supply of unbalanced phase voltage in AC panels, fused battery
system, unavailability of emergency backup, power failure etc.Other problems include
discontinuity of field windings at alternator terminals for open/short circuit
fault ,faulty MCCB(circuit breakers),blown out HRC fuses etc.

Opportunity:

Understanding and Learning about the folowwing :

1) Working of different electrical equipments like:

 RRU

 ERRU

 OVP

 V-belt

 Fans/lightning system

 Refrigeration and Cooling(RAC) system

 Alternator/panel system

2) Specifications of mentioned equipments.

3) Maintenance strategies and safety drills followed.

4) Specific working operations of LHB coaches.

5) Working of power substation housed in the workshop.

PROJECT 2:

Problems:

The efficiency and working of AC cooling ducts in coaches is affected by infiltration

of air and accumulating impurities inside the duct.As such, these ducts are complex to
monitor and clean because present systems are unable to clean the sticky dust
particles. Also, the ducts are only partially accessible by workers for cleaning
purposes.Present system of jet air pressure blowing is less efficient than robtic
cleaning workshop system.

Opportunity:

As part of the project , following opportunities are covered:

1) Inspection of AC duct units through live feed.

2) Understanding of basic working pf Arduino system, bluetooth module.

3) Efficient inspection and cleaning of ducts, which specifically aids in tropical

weather conditions like in India.

2.Project Objectives and Goals :

PROJECT 1:

 Understanding working operations of railway workshop, ranging from electrical

equipments, devices to maintenance of power-station and coaches.

 Suitable testing of devices.

 Observing fault removal in any region in the workshop like power

stations,equipments etc.

PROJECT 2:

 Understanding concept of AC duct cleaning through contemporary existing

sources.

 Understanding fundamentals of bluetooth control module,WIFI module,Arduino.

 Advantages of developed system over existing one.

3.Proposed Methodologies:

PROJECT 1:

 Field visit

 Proper understanding of each component theoretically and their practical

applications

 Need and procedure of maintenance of components, power station.

 Monitoring of AC,passenger and LHB coaches.

 Monitoring of RAC,TL,battery and other sections .

 Factualating of different faults occuring and their removal.

 Understanding the principles and working of RMPU(Roof Mounted Package

Unit).

In the field visit, which basically involves monitoring of different types of available

coaches, difference on the basis of working, components present, loading capacity etc.
like in passenger coache,AC coach,LHB coaches. It also involves inspection of under
and over mounted components like alternators, their inter connection with the battery
system and control toolbox,.In the V belt section ,analysyis of strength of V
belts,speed,accuracy is examined.

The refriferation and cooling cycle in the RAC section will alsobe monitored under
the process, whichinvolves working of compressor, condensor etc

PROJECT 2:

 Understanding the procedure of duct cleaning.

 Analysis of traditional topology followed for the process.

 Fundamentals of Arduino programming and its implementation in the inspection

cart

 Understanding working of different components used in the cart comprising of

bluetooth,wifi module,didital camera etc.

 Analysyis of vaccuum section installed in the system.

It is a robotic car with Bluetooth connectivity, zero degree turning radius & Adriuno
based programmable microcontroller along with mounted digital camera with live
streaming digital view for precise inspection of inaccessible AC duct. This digital
video can be viewed and recorded at any place through Internet Protocol.

4. Plan for the completion of the project semester:

 Around 2 months dedicated for Train-Lightning(TL) section.
 1.5-2 months dedicated to Refrigeration and cooling (RAC) section.
 1 month dedicated to Carriage Motors (CM) section of workshop
 1 month dedicated to Loco Motors (LM) shop/section.
 Simultaneously, the Inspection cart project is also developed.
