Title of Lesson:
Curriculum Outcome:
N5- Demonstrate an understanding of adding and subtracting positive fractions and mixed
numbers, with like and unlike denominators, concretely, pictorially and symbolically (limited
to positive sums and differences) (Grade 7)
Overall Purpose: Students will become The teacher will circulate the class while
familiarized again with how to add fractions. students work through their sheet. Students
In previous classes, students were given will be allowed two class days to work on
problems that involved the addition of two these assignments. Assignments will then be
positive fractions with unlike denominators. marked to check for student understanding.
Many students struggled with this concept, so
in this lesson, students will have a visual aid
(egg carton) to help them understand what
happens when we add fractions.
Materials/Resources:
At least 3 egg cartons for the teacher to model the example addition problems.
Ping Pong balls to represent eggs
Egg-Carton problem worksheet
Exit slip
Methods/Structure:
Students will be seated in their assigned seats. Students can work with the person next to them.
The teacher should spend 10 minutes doing the example problems on the smart board.
Students should be given 25 minutes to work through their problems. Near the end of class
students will be given 10 minutes to complete their exit slip.
1. The class will begin with the teacher introducing the Egg-Carton Addition activity.
You should mention that in today’s lesson we are going to use an egg carton, that is
divided into 12 parts as our whole (denominator). We are then going to model the
addition of fractions using egg-cartons. Model the activity for the class before you have
them do it on their own.
2. Open the Grade 8 Addition smart lesson. Go through the four examples with the class.
Answer any student questions.
3. Hand out the egg carton addition problem sheets. Students can work though the
problems with a partner.
4. Before you give out the exit slip, summarize what happened in today’s class. You can
ask the students what did they find hard? What did they find easy? What would they
want to try next class?
5. With about 10 minutes left of class, hand out the exit slips. Collect these at the end of
class. Make sure every student does one.
