For example, if speakers are talking to the people they work with about
their work, their language is likely to be rather different from that they will
use, say, at home with their families in discussing other topics. Linguistic
varieties that are linked in this way to particular occupations or topics can
be termed registers. The register of law, for example, is different from the
register of medicine, which in turn is different from the language of
engineering - and so on. Registers are usually characterised entirely, or
almost so, by vocabulary differences: either by the use of particular words,
or by the use of words in a particular sense...7
[R]egister gives a clue about what we are doing. The concept of register is
typically concerned with variation in language conditioned by uses rather
than users and involves consideration of the situation or context of use, the
purpose, subject matter and content of the message, and the relationship
between participants. For example, two lawyers discussing a legal matter
use the register of law; the language of police detectives reviewing a case
reflects a register particular to their profession and the topic under
discussion. If we hear words such as "Our merciful Father in heaven, grant

The key fact about a given genre is that it has some readily identifiable
distinguishing features that set it off markedly from other genres, and that
those features remain stable over a substantial period of time. In most
cases, a particular genre also occupies a well-defined place in the culture
of the people who make use of the genre. Among the genres familiar to
most of us are lyric poetry, religious liturgy, legal documents, proverbs,
fairytales, scholarly monographs and news stories. ... Very often, mastery
of a particular genre is seen as a requirement for a certain profession; this
is so for lawyers, bards, academics, shamans, scientists and physicians,
among others. 11

CHAPTER TWO
LEGAL TEXTS
BAHAA-EDDIN A. HASSAN
1. Technical Terminology
Technical vocabulary is noticed in legal documents. Words such as ‘said’
or ‘such’ are often used. Many clichés can be recognized in legal
documents. Examples are:
Among these are adverbs such as ‘thereof’, ‘thereto’, ‘therein’ which mean
“ΔϘϴΛϮϟ ϩάϫ ΐΟϮϤΑ”. The most frequent discourse expression in the contracts,
‘hereto’, is used in the phrase ‘parties hereto’, and is mentioned implicitly
in Arabic. Notice the following:
4. Use of Shall
The modal ‘shall’ is used to indicate obligation to the subject of the
sentence. It should not be confused with future ‘shall’. In some cases the
expression ‘is to’ is used as an alternative. The modal verb ‘must’ can not
be used in this sense. Look at the following example:
Legal Texts 9
The first party shall have the right to assign the second party any other
work
ήΧ ϞϤϋ ϯ΄Α ϰϧΎΜϟ ϑήτϟ ϰϟ ΪϬόϳ ϥ ϰϓ ϖΤϟ ϝϭϷ ϑήτϠϟ ϥϮϜϳ ϥ ϰϠϋ
As used in the lease, the following terms shall have the meanings set forth
below
1. Modulation
It deals with the variation through a change of viewpoint, of perspective
and introducing a clarification with respect to the original formulation.
Modulation consists of using a phrase that is different in the source and
target languages to convey the same idea. Let us take the example of the
word ‘ϰѧѧόΟέ’ which is translated as ‘revocable’ to match the the different
legal system. Another example is ‘˯ήΑ·’ which is rendered as ‘non-
liability’.
10 Chapter Two
2. Shift
It is a change in the grammar from source text to target text (singular to
plural; position of the adjective, changing the world class or part of
speech. This is the process where parts of speech change their sequence
when they are translated.
3. Over-translation (Addition)
The translator depends on pragmatic inference to supplement the text with
information that does not exist in the original text. This strategy is used
because of the lack of functional equivalence in the target language.
4. Under-translation (Omission)
If the meaning conveyed by a particular item or expression is not
necessary to mention in the understanding of the translation or has no
functional equivalence in the target language, translators use this strategy
to avoid lengthy explanations or unexplained meaning in the target
language. Let us take the phrase ‘ௌ ϪϠΣ Νϭί’. The underlined modification
of the noun ‘marriage’ is deleted.
5. Substitution
It is a process appears when a word or sentence in the source text is
substituted with the target text item in order to adapt or create similar
message with the source text (ST) with rules of language which is
acceptable in the target language. An example of substitution is the
translation of the word ‘ϰϋήη’ as ‘’legal’.
6. Expansion
It aims to make explicit information that is implicit in the original, either
in the main body or in footnotes or a glossary. Let us take for example the
translation of ‘ϞΠόϤϟ ήϬϤϟ’ and ‘ϞΟΆϤϟ ήϬϤϟ’. These are explicitly rendered
as ‘down-payment dowry’ and ‘deferred payment dowry’. Another
example is the word ‘ΓΎϛί’. It is wrongly translated as ‘alms’ which is
equivalent to ‘ΔϗΪλ’. Therefore, the word ‘ΓΎϛί’ should be explicated in the
text or in the notes.
Legal Texts 11
7. Exoticism
The substitution of dialect, or nonsense words, in the original text by
rough equivalents in the target language (sometimes marked by italics or
underlining). An example is the word ‘ΓΎϛί’ as ‘zakat’.
8. Creation
It is a replacement of the original text with a text that preserves only the
essential message, ideas, and functions of the original. This strategy
includes neologism which means coining new words and regionalism
which means using a peculiar feature in a particular region or country.

defray the damage, the loss and the legal costs. I have therefore convened
a Notary Council, personally drawn up this debenture, read it aloud to the
above-mentioned debtor and thoroughly acquainted him with its

contents, entirely confirms the correctness of what is herein entered and
has signed it in my presence and that of the two witnesses who are
signatories below. It has been recorded and endorsed by us all for him in
due form.
Notice how legal English is different from general English. There is great
tendency to use formulaic expressions. In the previous example the
formulaic expression ‘had before me Mr. …’ is complex and archaic
language. Notice also the deictic formulaic expressions ‘hereby’,
‘aforementioned’ and ‘said’. The next text is a sample of deposition in trust.

Application for Release
To….. On….. Presented by the detainee…..
I have been detained in the prison of ….. since / / for the crime with
which I am charged and whereas in the event of the charge being proven I
may be released, and insofar as the investigative procedures concerning
me have been concluded and I have a known place of residence and a
family for which I am responsible, the prolongation of my detention
causes me considerable harm.
I therefore appeal to your sense of justice:
1. For my rightful release, in the event that all the conditions of this
are met;
2. In the event of this being impossible, for my release on bail or
without bail.
I undertake to be present at all proceedings and sessions of court whenever
I am instructed to do so. I similarly undertake to submit myself to the
verdict when this is made.
The technical term ‘on bail’ is the functional equivalent of ‘ΔϟΎϔϜΑ’. In the
next few text samples, we will deal with documents from the family court.

Preamble
Whereas recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and
inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of
freedom, justice and peace in the world,
Whereas disregard and contempt for human rights have resulted in
barbarous acts which have outraged the conscience of mankind, and the
advent of a world in which human beings shall enjoy freedom of speech
and belief and freedom from fear and want has been proclaimed as the
highest aspiration of the common people,
Whereas it is essential, if man is not to be compelled to have recourse, as a
last resort, to rebellion against tyranny and oppression, that human rights
should be protected by the rule of law,
Whereas it is essential to promote the development of friendly relations
between nations,
Whereas the peoples of the United Nations have in the Charter reaffirmed
their faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the
human person and in the equal rights of men and women and have
determined to promote social progress and better standards of life in larger
freedom,

The following text contains scientific terms such as ‘DNA’ and ‘mtDNA’.
Gloss translation is used as a strategy in the next text.
Source Text 2
In the mid- 1980s, a study compared mtDNA from people around the world.
It found that people of African descent had twice as many genetic
differences from each other than as did others. Because mutations seem to
occur at a steady rate over time, scientists were able to conclude that modern
humans must have lived in Africa at least twice as long as anywhere else.
They now calculate that all living humans maternally descend from a single
woman who lived roughly 150,000 years ago in Africa, a "mitochondrial
Eve". If geneticists are right, all of humanity is linked to Eve through an
36 Chapter Three
unbroken chain of mothers. This Eve was soon joined by "Y- chromosome
Adam," the putative genetic father of us all, also from Africa. DNA studies
have confirmed that all the people on Earth, with all their shapes and colors,
can trace their ancestry to ancient Africans.

The force of gravity inside black holes is stronger than anything in the
universe. Not even light can escape their gravity and this causes the
blackness. At the same time, it's impossible to see inside one. Na black
hole is a place completely cut off from the rest of the universe by a
boundary called an event horizon. Nothing inside can be observed from
the outside and vice versa. Anything entering a black hole a star, a planet,
a person is lost forever.
Although it was his own theory of relativity that first predicted their
existence, Albert Einstein never believed black holes were real. He felt
nature would not permit such objects. It seemed impossible to him that the
force of gravity could become powerful enough to cause the center of an
enormous star to disappear from the universe.

x Being told you have breast cancer can be scary and stressful. You
probably have a lot of questions and concerns. Learning about the
disease, how it’s treated, and how this information might apply to
you is a lot to do on your own. You might need some help. The
Breast Care Centre at Tawam Hospital can give you general
information about this disease and its treatment, but your doctor is
the best source of information about your situation.
x It’s important for you to be able to talk frankly and openly with
your cancer care team. They want to answer your entire question,
no matter how minor they might seem to you. But it helps if you
know what to ask. Here are some questions that you can use to help
you better understand breast cancer and your options. Don’t be
afraid to take notes and tell the doctors or nurses when you don’t
understand what they’re saying.
x The questions are grouped by where you are in the process of
cancer treatment. Not all of these questions will apply to you, but
they should help get you started.

Hepatitis C
x How is Hepatitis C Transmitted?
Hepatitis C is usually spread when the blood and blood products
from an infected person enter in the body of another person:
- Blood transfusion and organ transplantation.
- Injection given with contaminated syringes and needle-
stick injuries in health-care settings.
- Injection drug use.
- From a mother infected with Hepatitis C to her baby during
child birth.
- Hepatitis C may be transmitted through sex with an
infected person or sharing personal items contaminated
with infectious blood, but these are less common.

Stylistic aspects. Both media and political texts fall under a number of
genres (i.e., an article, pamphlet, political speech, proclamation, critical
article, review, hearing, transcript of an event, etc.). The correct
identification of the form and its established attributes, as well as
rhetorical figures and tropes, allows for an easier translation of its content
and its easier appropriation into the TL. In comparison to other types of
texts, such as literary texts, media and political texts may use fewer tropes
and rhetoric figures due to their data- and fact-oriented nature. However,
certain figures and tropes are consistently used in these texts for the
explicit purpose of directly or indirectly influencing the readers. The
correct identification and translation of such instances presents one of the
major challenges: the translator has to decide how to address a trope or a
figure and whether to preserve the form at the expense of the meaning or
vice versa.
88 Chapter Four
In this example, the author of the text partially decodes the metaphor of
the prankster’s name, anticipating that some of the readers may not be
intimately familiar with all the characters from the story of Troy.
However, at the same time, he relies on the general knowledge in the
thesaurus of the readers about the events surrounding the siege of Troy and
the cunning way it was conquered. In translating this passage, not only the
toponyms, the names of the places, like Troy, and the anthroponyms, the
names of the characters, like Sinon, Virgil and the title of his masterpiece,
Aeneid, present a challenge. It is also key to convey the metaphoric link
between the author of the prank described in the passage and the trick
played on the Trojans who accepted the wooden horse as a gift to gods,
bringing it into the city unaware of the enemy troops hidden inside.
Allusion is one of the most extensively used tropes or figures in the
media and political texts. It allows for subtle persuasion, which is often a
more successful tactic. It also allows the use of a humoristic element, or
“naming the unnamed,” i.e., referring to one’s political opponent or action
without mentioning it directly. For example, the passage below from the
same article describes the reaction of the affected party:
In this passage, the political figure in question, following the literary path
initiated by the prankster, veils his direct threat to the opponent by
alluding to the dramatic endings of many of William Shakespeare’s

incongruent with the rest of the text, and, finally, be aware of the possible
connotations to assure that both connotative and denotative meaning of the
words or sentence is conveyed8. The translation of such elements requires
the translator to be attuned to the levels of cultural sensitivity of both the
TL and the SL and to offer the interpretation that conveys the information
and the emotiveness accurately without breaching the cultural norms of the
TL.
Among other lexical peculiarities, both political and media texts
extensively use acronyms and abbreviations, frequently without
explanation. This can often result in a translation challenge when less-
known entities are cited. In media texts the translators can also come
across colloquialisms and even foul language due to a lesser degree of
formality or the desire of the author to make an impact on the audience.
These less formal words, colloquialisms, and neologisms appeal to the
present moment and aim to connect the authors of the text to their
audience. For instance, in the example below, the author uses a less formal
¨folks¨ when addressing his audience, which creates a sense of the
immediacy of the interaction and approximates direct oral communication:
But let’s also use common sense here, folks. At the end of the day, why do
special interests want to bring in more low-skilled workers?9

expression “you all” as \ޖyܞl\, along with the more traditional \yü-ܞޖl, ޖyü-
ܞޙl\.
Many of the discussed tropes and rhetorical figures can be regarded as
types of semantic compression, since a part of their meaning is not
explicitly present and needs to be extrapolated from the thesaurus of the
reader, which, as in the case of structural ellipsis, can lead to potential
mistakes and misunderstanding in translation. Semantic compression can
be observed in the use of rhetoric figures and tropes, as well as references
to places, traditions, individuals, among others. For instance, the meaning
of a metaphor, metonymy, litotes (understating) or hyperbole
(exaggeration) is incomplete, as it cannot be deduced in its entirety and
complexity from the direct meaning of the words; it rather relies on the
broader knowledge of the recipient. Similarly, in the example below one
can observe several instances of semantic compression, the incorrect
interpretation of which would affect the translation.
In the example above, “in half a century” refers to the time period
between the mid-XX and the XXI century. The meaning of this
compressed element can be deduced from the broader context of the
article, as well as from the general knowledge about this particular reform
in U.S. history. At the same time, in order to correctly translate the
semantically compressed element “The Roosevelt Room” the translators
need to possess in their thesaurus an association of this room with the
White House. Since it is a specific name, they may need to investigate if
there is an accepted translation of the term when referring to this element.

The latter often presents one of the post significant challenges in the
process of translation, as the same element can be interpreted differently
by the representatives of the SL and TL cultures, depending on the
information available in their thesaurus. Anticipating these
misunderstandings allows the translator to address these challenges in a
number of ways (i.e., in a note, selecting the most appropriate synonym,
etc.). For instance, in the example below, the implication is that the
proposal in question goes against the founding principles of American
society. In order to understand the gravity of this implication, the reader
and the translator need to possess the knowledge about the significance of
the Statue of Liberty for the issue of immigration in the U.S. and the
importance and the historic role of the cited sonnet (“New Colossus” by
Emma Lazarus) written to help raise money for the pedestal of the statue
and later mounted there on a plaque.
What you’re proposing, or what the President is proposing here does not
sound like it’s in keeping with American tradition when it comes to
immigration. The Statue of Liberty says, “Give me your tired, your poor,
your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.” It doesn’t say anything
about speaking English or being able to be a computer programmer.12
4.6 Conclusions
In conclusion, the translation of media and political texts, while
following the general challenges of translation, presents its own set of
challenges, specific to these types of texts. These challenges stem from the
specific characteristics of the genres, as well as contemporary practice and
the patterns of consumption by the audience. In this light, it is critical for a
translator to have a broader knowledge and understanding of the historic
and cultural landscape and the political processes that take place in the SL

4.7 Exercises
1. Based on your readings, answer the following questions:
x What distinguishes media and political texts from other types of
texts?
x How can a mistranslation of the elements of the header in a media
or political text affect the text itself and its impact on the reader?
x Why is a deep understanding of both historic and present-day
context of both cultures important for the translation of a political
text?
x What are some of the grammatical peculiarities of these texts? Give
concrete examples.
x How can a misinterpretation of the author’s position and objective
(implication of modus and elocution) affect the correct translation
of the text and its understanding by the reader?
x What allows written media texts, such as newspapers, to compete
with the audio and video streams broadcasted on TV and over the
Internet?

2. Shift
It is a change in the grammar from SL to TL (singular to plural; position of
the adjective, changing the word class or part of speech.3 This is the
process where parts of speech change their sequence when they are
translated. This requires that the translator knows to replace a word
category in the target language without altering the meaning of the source
text.
3. Over-translation (Addition)
The translator depends on pragmatic inference to supplement the text with
information that does not exist in the original text. The author of the
original text depends on the shared cultural knowledge with his target
readers. But the translated text is prepared for a different group of readers
who do not share the same cultural background.4
4. Under-translation (Omission)
This may be a drastic kind of strategy, but in fact it may be even useful to
omit a word or expression in some contexts. If the meaning conveyed by a
particular item or expression is not necessary to mention in the
understanding of the translation, translators use this strategy to avoid
lengthy explanations or even repetition.5

It is a process appears when a word or sentence in the source text is
substituted with the target text item in order to adapt or create similar
message with the source text (ST) with rules of language which is
acceptable in the target language.
6. Expansion
It relates to make explicit information that is implicit in the original, either
in the main body or in footnotes or a glossary.
7. Exoticism
The substitution of dialect, nonsense words, in the original text by rough
equivalents in the target language (sometimes marked by italics or
underlining).
8. Updating
It is the replacement of obscure information by modern equivalents.
9. Situational equivalence
It is the insertion of a more familiar context than the one used in the

It is a replacement of the original text with a text that preserves only the

UN’s Rima Khalaf quits over report accusing Israel of apartheid
A UN official has resigned after saying the UN had pressured her to
withdraw a report accusing Israel of apartheid over its treatment of
Palestinians.
The report was published by the Economic and Social Commission for
Western Asia (ESCWA), led by Under Secretary General Rima Khalaf.
She had said it was the first to conclude Israel was a racist state.
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres had distanced himself from the
report, saying it reflected its authors’ views.
As of Friday, it was no longer visible on the ESCWA’s website.
Speaking in the Lebanese capital Beirut, Ms Khalaf, a Jordanian, said she
had submitted her resignation to Mr Guterres after he insisted on the
report’s withdrawal.
“We expected of course that Israel and its allies would put huge pressure
on the secretary general of the UN so that he would disavow the report,
and that they would ask him to withdraw it,” she was quoted as saying by
AFP news agency.
Israel has condemned the report. “The attempt to smear and falsely label
the only true democracy in the Middle East by creating a false analogy is
despicable and constitutes a blatant lie,” Israeli UN Ambassador Danny
Danon said in a statement.
The report itself said it had established on the “basis of scholarly inquiry
and overwhelming evidence, that Israel is guilty of the crime of
apartheid”.
It was published on Wednesday by the ESCWA, which promotes
economic and social development in 18 Arab countries, and is based in
Beirut.
In 2014, the then US Secretary of State, John Kerry, warned that
Israel risked becoming “an apartheid state” if a two-state solution to
its conflict with the Palestinians was not found soon.
Relations with the Palestinians have been a major factor in Israel’s
foreign and security policy.

Trump to Merkel: We were both wiretapped under Obama
President Donald Trump has stood by claims he was wiretapped
under Barack Obama, telling visiting German Chancellor Angela
Merkel: "At least we have something in common, perhaps."
US intelligence agencies under Mr Obama reportedly monitored Mrs
Merkel's phone, sparking an angry response.
But both Republican and Democratic congressional leaders have said they
do not believe Mr Trump was wiretapped.
Mr Trump and Mrs Merkel have discussed key issues including Nato and
trade.
Her visit had been scheduled for Tuesday but was postponed due to a
snowstorm.
Mr Trump made his wire-tapping jibe in a joint press conference with Mrs
Merkel. She gave a quizzical look.
He was also asked about a comment by White House press secretary
Sean Spicer that the UK's GCHQ spy agency had carried out wiretapping
on Mr Trump during the US election campaign.
Mr Trump said Mr Spicer had been quoting a comment on Fox TV. The
president said he had not offered an opinion on it, adding: "You shouldn't
be talking to me, you should be talking to Fox."
GCHQ rejected the allegations as "nonsense" and Downing Street says it
has been assured the US will not repeat the claims.
The US president was also asked if he regretted any of his regular tweets.
He said "very seldom", adding that it was a way to "get round the media
when it doesn't tell the truth".
The body language was at times awkward. In an earlier photo opportunity
in the White House, Mrs Merkel asked him quietly: "Do you want a

words that can fit the meaning of the translated message. In addition,
creating better translation can help strengthening the whole translated

since the translator should find suitable lexical words that can fit culturaly
and linguistically the meaning.

Pakistan asks Facebook to help fight blasphemy

about content on the social media site, according to the interior ministry.
Blasphemy is a highly sensitive and incendiary issue in Pakistan.
Critics say blasphemy laws, which allow the death penalty in some cases,
are often misused to oppress minorities.
Earlier this week Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif voiced his
support for a wide-ranging crackdown on blasphemous content on social
media.
In a statement on his party's official Twitter account, he described
blasphemy as an "unpardonable offence".
'Should share information'
Then on Thursday, Interior Minister ChaudhryNisar reasserted Pakistan's
determination to tackle the issue, saying he would take "any steps
necessary" to make sure Pakistan's message got across.
He said he had asked officials to liaise with the FBI in the US and with
social media platforms on a daily basis.
"Facebook and other service providers should share all information about
the people behind this blasphemous content with us," he is quoted as
saying by the Dawn newspaper.
There has been little official description of what blasphemous content has
been found online so far, but in the past blasphemy accusations have
ranged from depictions of the Prophet Muhammad to critiques and
inappropriate references to the Koran.
But some critics say that this latest move is simply a way of cracking
down on dissent.
When five liberal bloggers and activists recently went missing, they were
accused of blasphemy on social media. It is a very serious allegation in the
deeply conservative nation, which can make those accused of it a target of
public anger.

There are many strategies in translation that a translator may use based on
the context of the text. Translator has various types of strategies to be used
in the process of translation to create an acceptable message. So in the
above example, students should highlight and discuss the translational
strategies used and the most dominant strategy used in translating the
English text into Arabic. These strtagies are syntactic strategies, semantic
strategies and pragmatic strategies.

• Formulative.
The use of passive suppresses the author’s role and exclusively aims to
describe the facts and phenomena. It appears also in cases where not only
the agent but also the agency is irrelevant and the only thing that matters is
the affected subject. Knittlová gives the following examples:
Active verb forms in combination with the general pronoun “we” (used as
the subject) also frequently appear, where “we” mostly refers to the
author: “We deduced, we observe, we define, we obtain, we can express,
we see, we note, we consider, we assume, we have experimentally verified,
we placed…”5

Starchy materials
To produce ethanol from starch it is necessary to break down the chains
of this carbohydrate for obtaining glucose syrup, which can be converted
into ethanol by yeasts. This type of feedstock is the most utilized for
ethanol production in North America and Europe. Corn and wheat are
mainly employed with these purposes. In tropical countries, other starchy

During site preparation, a grader or dozer may be used to clear the site,

operators could encounter uneven ground, which may cause the
equipment to roll, buried pipes and cables, and unpredictable weather
changes, which could expose them to lightning or severe cold weather.

Uses of chlorine
The largest use is in the manufacture of poly (chloroethene), PVC. Other
major polymers produced using chlorine include the polyurethanes.
Although chlorine does not appear in the polyurethane molecule, chlorine
is used to make the intermediates, the isocyanates. The oxygenates
(Figure 1) are principally epoxypropane (propylene oxide) and propane-
1,3-diol, which are used to make polyols. These, like the isocyanates, are
used in turn to make polyurethanes.

time required for existing rigs as specific design features are responsible
for the new rig’s increased mobility:

Process safety
Regarding personal safety, in 2016, we set record lows in our Days Away
From Work Rate (0.016) and Total Recordable Incident Rate (0.14). The
largest-ever planned maintenance program at our Tengiz Chevr oil joint
venture was perhaps the greatest singular achievement in personal safety
for the year, with zero “Days Away From Work” injuries among 8,800
workers over a 40-day period. Overshadowing our otherwise strong
performance were 10 fatalities (nine contractors, one employee) that
132 Chapter Six
resulted from four incidents. One of the incidents—a helicopter crash off
the coast of Angola—accounted for six of the lives lost. Any loss of life is
unacceptable to us, and we are determined to eliminate fatalities
throughout our operations and process safety. Chevron continues to
improve performance in preventing incidents that result in a loss of
primary containment, including petroleum spills and vapor releases.
Programs like Well Safe in our Upstream business and Essential
Checklists in our Downstream and Chemicals (DS&C) operations support
our efforts to achieve zero significant incidents and fatalities. In DS&C,
Essential Checklists pinpoint key tasks that must be completed the right
way every time for potential high-consequence activities, such as vacuum
truck operations and confined-space entry. These key tasks are verified by
a co-worker who confirms in the field that we have safeguards in place
and functioning immediately before work begins. Our manufacturing
facilities and some of our complex Upstream plants use this same method
of safeguard verification. Across all of our operations, we seek to learn
from past incidents and to improve our procedures, training, maintenance
programs and designs. We share lessons learned throughout the company
and with industry organizations, such as the American Petroleum Institute
and the Center for Chemical Process Safety.15
