CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background and Purpose

In this globalization era, English Study Program students can afford as many knowledge as
possible from virtual world depends on their needs to support their study. But, it is not enough.
Considering the rapid development of science, technology, and art in the era of globalization,
English Study Program / English Teaching Learning provides the students with real activities
and experiences. Not only for applying, testing or exercising their knowledge, but also exploring
the real workplace and situation. Also to find out where or how to use their knowledge acquired
in the classroom to support the future by communicate with the native speakers or non-native
speakers who use English. Entrepreneurship is one of the programs that is already set up in
curriculum of English Education Study Program which has two credits.

This year’s Entrepreneurship was held in Bali from February 21 to February 25 2019. Bali is
the chosen destination for this year’s Entrepreneurship. It is not without reasonings. On the other
hand, there is a lot of consideration before finally we chose to go to Bali. Bali is well-known as
one of the most beautiful place in Indonesia and even in this world. This beautifulness obviously
related with its tourism mostly. The countless ethereal beaches,

In the end, this all comes in a form as tourism. When we talk about tourism, we also would
absolutely talk about tourist. Whether domestic or international tourist. Based on this
explanation, the writer try to point out the reasons why Bali is the chosen one. First Bali provides
us with real example of one of the most promising business or job field we could ever know, and
that is tourism. Ecotourism is a new trend nowadays, and as a soon to be an English graduate, we
need to open our eyes and see how this tourism works in real life as an addition to our English
knowledge and skill. Even though the trip was just for five days, but this trip gave us a really
good knowledge and experiences of ecotourism because we went to the right place. Bali has all
those tourist that we need to practice our English skill in real life with. Bali provides us with tour
guides that we need to interview, because yes they make money from their job, and their job
needs them to use English often. The last one, Bali is full with local sellers that run their business
with English as one of the biggest support. In summary, Bali is the perfect place for this course.
Through this program, the students are expected to improve and integrate English language
skills, also realize how English can be useful not only as an information but also as business
tools.

CONTENT
2.1 Observation Results
2.1.1 Workshop at IALF
On the first day in Bali, the participants visited IALF. IALF (Indonesia Australia
Language Foundation) is Indonesia’s premier institution for English and Indonesian language
training, IELTS testing and preparation, and teacher training for teachers of English. It is a
non-profit organization, committed to providing high quality language training services
throughout Indonesia and the Asia Pacific region. IALF has three training centres, in Jakarta,
Surabaya and Bali, all with excellent resources and facilities to support language learning.
IALF offers a wide range of English language programs to meet the needs of Indonesians:
English for Academic Purposes for those who wish to study overseas; specialised language
training for business and the workplace; and, at IALF Bali, General English for all ages.
IALF Bali is a teacher training centre, conducting the internationally accredited Trinity
College London Certificate in TESOL, as well as a range of IALF certificated training
courses for teachers of English and teachers of other subjects using the medium of English.
The participants got a great opportunity to join a Teacher Training Workshop at IALF. The
workshop was really fun and interactive based on the writer personal opinion. The topic of
the workshop is Teaching Communicative Grammar. The trainer is the manager of Teacher
Training Services, Mr. David Bradbury. He informed the participants from the very
beginning such as what is grammar and how familiar the participants with it before he taught
the participants about how to teach grammar in communicative ways. From the workshop,
the participants got to know many activities to teach grammar in communicative ways such
as playing chain of sentences and running dictation. It was a really great workshop because in
the future, as teachers, the participants need to help their students to learn to communicate.
They need to learn more than just the names of tenses and the rules for forming them.
2.2 Interview Results

2.2.1 Interview with Tour Guide

On the last day in Bali, the participants visited Pura Tanah Lot as the last destination.
There, the participants had few hours as personal time to take pictures, do shopping, or even
just simply enjoy the moment. The writer used this opportunity to do an interview with a tour
guide right there after enjoying the personal time. Bli Made Mertayasa is a kind-hearted and
funny tour guide. The writer asked him for how long he had been worked as a tour guide, and
he joked that it is just for one year. That is all that he remembers, but in fact there are many
years before. He explained that to be a tour guide is not easy.
First of all, tour guide is a profession that legal and included in government. All the tour
guides in Bali work under a organization called HPI. HPI is Himpunan Pramuwisata
Indonesia (The Association of Indonesian Guides) is a single forum for individuals who have
a profession as guides. HPI is a professional organization that is non-political and
independent, at the National, Provincial and Regency / City levels. He also said that a tour
guide would be considered legal if they have a license which proved by a special pin that
they need to wear every time they do their job. In that mean time, Bli Made also kind-
heartedly explained how to be a tour guide. Before they are stated deserved to be a tour
guide, they have to pass several tests that deal with language, history, geography, tourism,
and Balinese culture. After they passed the tests, they still have to join three months of
training before they can start doing their job as a tour guide.
The writer also asked him about how this tour guide system is and he answered that in
HPI there are divisions. Those divisions are domestic and international divisions that divided
again into some other divisions based on the country for the international division. So, it
would be so much easier to decide who is going to serve the tourist because they have the
divisions already. He told the writer that domestic division is a new division because back
then they just had the foreign division. Bli Made said that he used to have a foreign license,
specifically Italy, but after the bombing incident in 2002 he moved to domestic division. The
writer guesses he is being reasonable. As we know, the Bali bombing incident is a dark past
for our country because there is a lot of victims. This event is considered as the worst
terrorism event in Indonesian history. Recorded 202 fatalities and 209 people injured with
most of the victims were foreign tourists. But, the past is the past. Let’s just hope this kind of
incident is not going to happen anymore. In the end of the interview, the writer asked Bli
Made how many foreign languages that he had mastered. He said that he is fluent in English
only, a little bit more in Italian, and a master in market language for Spanish and Russian.

2.2.2 Interview with Local Sellers

It is an undeniable fact that tourism in Bali comes with a huge market place and business
field for the community. On the third day in Bali, participants went to Tanjung Benoa as the
first destination in the morning. Right there, beside of mesmerized by the ethereal view, the
writer also amazed by the countless company that provide water sports and the other facility
there. It is the prove of how tourism could give a big contribution in economy. At Tanjung
Benoa, the writer got to went to the Turtle Island. On the way there, the writer also got an
opportunity to interview the speed boat driver. Mr. Ahmad is a really friendly driver. He even
let the writer to drive the boat for a while. He made us the passenger felt comfortable even
though it was the first time that we met. He said that in Bali the tourists come from
everywhere. The most tourists come from India and China. But, surprisingly he said that it is
not that hard to communicate with them because sometimes they also understand Indonesian.
After that, in Turtle Island the writer also met Mrs. Elvin, an owner of fish therapy. She
runs the business for six years already which still considered new based on her opinion. She
stated that the tourist that usually comes there are from Europe, America, Arab, but mostly
from China and India. The writer asked how she offered the therapy and served them. She
said that they learned first from the staff that manage the place, and after that they tried to
practice by themselves. She said that it is not that hard as long as it is market language
because she is a senior high school graduate. Mrs. Elvin said that she is the most fluent in
English and Chinese, and a little bit Arabic. She even willingly to show her English which
the writer found very unique and fresh at the same time. The writer would let it to the
reader’s personal opinion about how unique and fresh it is, “Do you want try doctor fish?”.
CHAPTER III
Conclusion and Suggestion
There are a lot of things that the participants learned as the new experience and
knowledge that gained while the participants staying in Bali. The Entrepreneurship is a really
beneficial and refreshing course. It was an eye opening course because the participants
learned a lot of new things beside of their English education skill and knowledge. The
workshop at IALF gave us a lot of new knowledge about teaching English specially grammar
in a really fun and interactive way. Moreover, the interview that the participants did while
staying there is a good practice for their communication skill. As a whole, the
Entrepreneurship course is a great course to apply the participants English skill, because the
task needs the participants to use their speaking skill, listening skill, and writing skill. Other
than that, the most important new knowledge that the participants learned is about how
language could be used as a source and tools in business. This kind of knowledge is a very
precious knowledge in this era of globalization.
This year’s the participants had a really great Entrepreneurship event. The writer hopes
that in the future the Entrepreneurship would be so much more greater than before. Whether
for the destination, the committee, the preparation and so on.
