ENGLISH FOR NURSING STUDENTS USING ANDROID APPLICATION

Nowadays, English has become not merely Foreign language, but also internal
language. It means that it becomes the language that widely use around the world. The
development of English is in accordance with the growth of technology as well. Technology
used in education has been widely use in school. It is amazing when technology can meet the
learning process in class, moreover it will be one of the teaching –learning instructionals that
mostly use either in the class or outside the class.
During the researcher’s eight years of teaching the nursing students, it has increased
the researcher’s interest in making more interesting media for the English learning activities.
So far, video, cassette and power point presentation are used in teaching-learning processes.
However, the researcher would like to make a game which based on the android application
as the media to enhance the students’ English vocabulary and expressions. The researcher
would like to propose a thesis entitled “English fo Nursing Students Using Android
Application”. The purpose of this thesis is to design a game based on android application
where the students or those who need to improve their English especially in nursing will be
able use this application. I hope it will be beneficial for:
 The nursing students
As the lecturer of nursing students I become aware the need of English is not only for
their learning but also for their vocational goals. There are a lot of opportunities for the
nursing students to work abroad, and many of them are also eager to work abroad, but their
lack of English becomes their obstacle. I do hope that my game application will help them to
improve their English where they can learn it independently outside the classroom and to
motivate them in learning English as well.
 The nurse
Eventhough it aimed for the nursing students, hopefully it also will give advantages
for the nurses who have already worked in medical institutions to improve their capability
specially in English.
 The teacher
I hope the application will also be useful for the teachers of English in nursing
academy whose background is not from nursing department to improve and innovate their
teaching learning process.

Android

Android is an operating system based on the Linux kernel and designed primarily
for touchscreen mobile devices such as smartphones andtablet computers. Initially developed
by Android, Inc., which Google backed financially and later bought in 2005. Android was
unveiled in 2007 along with the founding of the Open Handset Alliance: a consortium
of hardware, software, and telecommunication companies devoted to advancing open
standards for mobile devices1. Android application is used in creating the games since most
of the students have gadgets that based on android operating system.

Research and Development Procedure

The research and development procedure that will be used for this thesis is based on
Borg and Gell (1989) theories.

“Educational research and development (R & D) is a process used to develop and


validate educational products. The steps of this process are usually referred to as the R & D
cycle , which consists of studying research findings pertinent to the product to be developed,
developing the product based on the finding, field testing it in the setting where it will be used
eventually, and revising it to correct the deficiencies found in the field testing stage. In
indicate that product meets its behaviorally defined objectives”. (Borg & Gall, 1983:772)
The procedure can be described as follows:

1.Research and information collecting; literature study related to problem formulation, and
preparation for formulate the research framework are included in this step;
2. Planning; including formulate the skill related to the problem, determine the goals that will
be achieved in each step, and if it is needed, to do the limited fit and proper test;
3. Develop preliminary form of product, in developing preliminary form of product, it is
important to prepare the supporting components, guidelines and manual book, and
evaluate the appropriateness of supporting tools;
4. Preliminary field testing, the preliminary field testing is implemented in limited scale,
which involving 6-12 subjects. In this step, data collection and data analisis are gained
through interview, observation or questionnaire;
5. Main product revision, in this step, the revision of the preliminary product is based on the
result of preliminary testing. This revision can be implemented more than once, based
on the result shown in the limited testing, so it obtained the main product draft that are
ready to be tested in the broader area;
6. Main field testing, the main field testing involve all students;
7. Operational product revision, in this step, revising the result of boader result test, so that
the developed product is operational model design which is ready to be validated;
8. Operational field testing, is the validation test on operational model product.
9. Final product revision, final revision toward developed model to establish final product;

10. Dissemination and implementation, distributing the developed product/ model.

These processes are used to develop and validate the educational product in this case
the educational product of English for nursing students using android. The research and
information collecting will be including literature study related to problem formulation, and
preparation for formulate the research framework. The second step will be included formulate
the skill related to the problem, determine the goals that will be achieved in each step, and if
it is needed, to do the limited fit and proper test. The third step, the researcher will prepare
the supporting components, guidelines and manual book, and evaluate the appropriateness of

In the preliminary field testing which is in the fourth step, will be implemented in

main field testing, will involve all students.
After main field testing, in the seventh step, the result of boader result test will be
revised, so that the developed product is operational model design which is ready to be
validated. The eight step, the operational model product will be validated. The ninth will be
the final revision toward developed model to establish final product. The last step will be
distributing the developed product/ model.
