About OACE

The Office of Adult and Continuing Education


The New York City Department of Education, Office of Adult and Continuing Education (OACE) is
the largest provider of adult literacy education services in the state. We are an integral part of
the New York City Department of Education’s Division of Equity and Access.

We offer over 900 classes for adults age 21 and over who have not earned a U.S. high school
Career and Technology Education

diploma or equivalency. We operate four Adult Learning Centers located in Brooklyn, Manhattan,
Queens, and the Bronx. We offer day and evening classes Monday through Saturday at more
than 175 sites in all five boroughs, including public schools, community centers and faith-based
organizations. Eligible students can take classes at any of our sites, regardless of which borough
they live in. All classes are taught by certified teachers and are tuition-free. Students may be
required to pay exam fees and other associated fees for specific classes.

Ongoing registration for classes in Adult Basic Education, High School Equivalency (TASC),
English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) and Career and Technical Education (CTE) is
held regularly at schools and offices around the city. A listing of intake/registration dates can be

All course offerings are Tuition-Free and for Eligible NYC residents
ONLY.

The New York City Office of Adult and Continuing Education (OACE) provides more
than 900 tuition-free* classes for eligible students (21 years and older who have not
earned a U.S. high school diploma or equivalency) in:
Adult Basic Education (ABE)
Career and Technical Education (CTE)
High School Equivalency Preparation (HSE)
English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
*Students may be required to pay associated fees for textbooks, certification exams and/or uniforms
for specific classes.
We offer morning, afternoon and evening classes, Monday through Saturday at more than 175 sites
in all five boroughs, including public schools, community centers and faith-based organizations.
Students are welcome to take classes at any of our sites, regardless of the borough in which they
live.
Important: If a CTE class you desire requires a HS diploma or equivalent, you may dually enroll in an
adult basic ed. class. Learn a skill while preparing for your HS equivalency diploma.
OACE currently offers High School Equivalency exams at ten Testing Centers across all boroughs.

TABE Testing and Registration
Applicants are required to take the “Test of Adult Basic Education” (TABE).
The math and reading test results will be evaluated to determine both academic readiness and
appropriate course placement.

If reading and math levels fall below the academic requirement of an applicant’s course choice,
literacy classes will be offered to assist in raising academic readiness. When an applicant’s retest
meets the academic requirements for placement, enrollment preference in the original course
choice will be awarded.

Contact the regional office offering the course of your choice for orientation,
testing, and registration dates and times. Course offerings and training locations
are subject to change.

Carpentry

Interior & Exterior


The Carpentry program will prepare students for
entry level employment as carpenters in both new
construction and renovation applications. Students
will receive basic carpentry theory, including
occupational math related to the trade of carpentry.
This 10-month course will provide hands-on training
in the installation of doors, windows and roofing;
instruction on operations such as drywall mechanics,
trim-joinery and molding; and an introduction

to carpentry machinery (how to set up and use


traditional shop tools such as the table saw drill
press, jointer, thickness planer, redial arm-saw, band-
saw and router).

Students will also be introduced to Green Construction


which is designed to teach students how to maximize

This 10 month course covers the fundamentals of basic electrical theory and hands-on
experience as it relates to residential and commercial wiring. Students will be prepared to
become electrician’s helpers or skilled apprentice electricans.

Construction Trades

This 1 term course will prepare students for the one year Electrical Installation program.
Participants who successfully complete the course will qualify for programs leading to
certification as a Solar PV Installer. All theory and hands on practice are aligned to the National
Electrical Code Guidelines. For this course, students will receive a Certificate of Completion for
“Solar Electric.”

This 10 month course covers the skills and competencies required in the plumbing industry.
Students are taught installation and maintenance concepts as well as the design and function of
plumbing fixtures. Participants are also introduced to aspects of running a plumbing company.

study and practice of welding. This class will cover the techniques of five welding and cutting
processes that are typically used in the industry. In addition students will be eligible for an OSHA

Building Maintenance Program

This 10 month Building Maintenance course prepares students for an entry level position in
the building maintenance industry. This course covers four core areas: carpentry maintenance,
plumbing/heating maintenance, electrical maintenance and janitorial services. Upon successful

The Medical Billing and Coding program is a 250-hour, 5-month course of study. The core areas

The CNA program is designed to prepare students to take the New York State Department of Health

This 60-hour course is a supplement to other OACE Allied-Health offerings (Medical Office Ad-
ministration and CNA) and covers phlebotomy, electrocardiography, electronic health records
and related clinical medical assisting topics. The course is designed to prepare students to take
the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) Certified EKG Technician (CET) and Certified Phle-

This 5 month A+ Computer Repair course will provide students with the skills required to install,
upgrade, repair, configure, troubleshoot, and perform basic maintenance on computer hardware
systems and peripheral devices. Students will also learn about memory systems, ports and
subsystems, operating systems, and commercial and occupational competencies. At the end of
the course, students will be required to take the CompTia A+ exams for certification.

The Cisco Network Academy introduces students to the concepts and technology of networking,
network design and wiring, programming, and equipment configuration. Students should have
prior computer maintenance and repair knowledge before taking this 10 month course. Students
who successfully complete the course will be eligible to take the Cisco Certified Network
Associate (CCNA) certification exam.

Learning how to use and understand computers in today’s modern world begins with this 5
month course. Students will learn what computers are, how they work, and be able to use a

This 10 month Digital Technology course is an intermediate certification course which prepares
students with the skills required to excel in virtually all career fields and academic pursuits re-
quiring computer and Internet applications. This course leads to an “Internet Computing Core”
(IC3) Certification, which is the computer indurstry’s global standard for computer literacy. IC3
certified individuals are professionally recognized as having the critical entry-level skills neces-
