After obtaining a degree in Naval Architecture, in the early 70s, Sri S C Misra had joined M/s
Hindustan Shipyard as a design engineer. In pursuit of higher education he went to UK and
obtained his Ph. D from University of New Castle upon Tyne, UK. He then joined the Indian
Institute of Technology, Kharagpur and took up teaching. He has been a Professor and Head of
the Department of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering till end February 2009, whence he
had taken over as Director of the National Ship Design and Research Centre, Visakhapatnam.

Currently he holds the post of Director of Indian Maritime University, Visakhapatnam Campus
(formerly known as the national Ship Design and Research Center), under the Ministry of
Shipping, Government of India. He had been teaching a wide variety of subjects at IIT
Kharagpur and his main areas of interest include ship design and production and experimental
hydrodynamics. He is involved in a number of sponsored research and industrial consultancy
projects. Since taking over as Director of Indian Maritime University, Visakhapatnam Campus,
he has started an undergraduate and postgraduate program in Naval Architecture and Ocean
Engineering. Under his leadership IMU Visakhapatnam Campus is moving towards becoming a
major centre for Ship design and research.
