McDonald’s goes belly up in Bolivia

December 11, 2012 | Filed under: Health,News,Rights | Posted by: True Activist

McDonald’s leaves Bolivia healthier forever!

After 14 years of presence in the country, and

despite all the existing campaigns and having a
network, the chain was forced to close the eight
restaurants that remained open in the three main
cities: La Paz, Cochabamba and Santa Cruz de la
Sierra.

It is a question of the first Latin-American

country that will remain without any McDonald’s,
and the first country in the world where the Subscribe by Email
company has to close because it persists in having

The impact for the creative and marketing managers has been so strong that a documentary was
filmed under the title “Why McDonald’s went broke in Bolivia,” where they try to somehow explain True Activist
the reasons that led Bolivians to still prefer pies to hamburgers.

Cultural rejection

The documentary includes interviews with cooks, sociologists, nutritionists, educators, historians Follow us on Google+
and more, where there is a general agreement: the rejection is neither to the hamburgers nor to their
taste. The rejection is in the minds and mentality of Bolivians. Everything indicates that “fast food”
is literally the opposite of a Bolivian’s conception of how to prepare a meal.

In Bolivia, the food to be good requires, in addition to taste, care, and hygiene, a lot of preparation
time. This is how a consumer values the quality of what goes into the stomach, also by the amount of +3,937
time it took to make the meal. Fast food is not for these people, the Americans concluded.

Sad to say, after spending 6 weeks in Bolivia, that there is a fried chicken shop every corner,
especially in La Paz and Cochabamba. They may don't eat Mc Yaqui but they do eat lot of local
versions of KFC.

The true reason they hate fast food is because they hate anything from America. Bolivia is one of the leaders
in cancer death rate. I still have not heard of a Bolivian Native that didn't die of cancer. They barely eat any
vegetables. These articles are making it sound like Bolivians are sooo healthy. They hate fast food for the
wrong reasons: racism. Everyone should hate fast food because it's unhealthy. If you visit Bolivia do Not tell
them you're an American. I know how they react.

According to the UN World Health rate of deaths by any type of cancer, Bolivians die at a rate of
86.1:100,000. Compare this to the UK at 137:100,000, the US at 123.8:100,000, Iceland at
119.4:100,000, and Australia at 118.4:100,000. Seems to me that Bolivians are considerably
healthier, Pearl. Not sure where you get your facts, except from a cognitive bias.

Im bolivian and this is not true, it was all because we have lots of fast local foods with lower price, i mean
HALF PRICE, we are a poor country, thats all. We dont have people to control this.. we cant even cure

Sharon, tell me about one country in Latin America where Mc Donalds doesn't have a strong
competition. In Colombia we have better fast food chain restaurants (El Corral for example,
similar prices, way better food) and a lot of cheaper places where you can eat hamburguers. In
spite of not having the best food, nor the best prices, Mc Donalds is opening more and more
restaurants. There are a lot of poor countries with a Mc Donalds in every corner, for the same
reason there are a lot of people without education but an iPhone in their pocket. The reason is
consumism. It is true that your country is probably the poorest in the region, but I rather believe
that the reason for this decision is dignity and traditions, not poverty.

John H Melo ok i may have use the word, but that doesnt mean the activists can promote their
causes with lies. That is not right, you cant teach or wait to have credibility in a cause if u give
wrong information just to capture more followers, not with this topic or other.

Jamaica kicked them out first long ago…they just wouldn’t eat that rubbish when they have plenty of wholesome
good local food chains so McD’s just gave up and got out of there.

McDonald’s goes belly up in Bolivia | True Activist

McDonalds left nearly 15 years ago… in 2002

But they still have Burger King, Subway, fried chicken chains and hot dog joints, not to mention Bolivian specific fast
food providers such as salteñerias, on every block of most Bolivian cities

The speciality I noticed on a very brief trip to Bolivia was sprinkling chopped up hotdog on top of fast food as a kind
of garnish… I wouldn’t have said that modern Bolivia is extremely health conscious. I have the feeling it is more to do
with finances than health that Bolivian’s don’t eat McDonalds.
