Can We Survive Without It?: Technological Advancements

On March 11, 2016, an astonishing heart surgery was conducted on a nine month old, but

there was something special about this heart surgery. The nine month old baby had a 20% chance

of living past his first birthday because of a very rare and complicated heart defect. The baby was

successfully operated on because the doctors were able to 3D print a heart model and get precise

steps on how to operate on the heart. The baby is now able to live a long and healthy life

(Benedict 2016). Technology has been essential for the advancement of the human population. It

affects everyone’s life in ways that they do not even realize. From a simple text that you send on

your phone to a car that can transport you from one location to another. The rapid change of

technology is for the greater good and comes with so many benefits. Medical Technology and

research have come very far from where it was years ago. Death can now be prevented and

avoided with new technology. Technology has made life easier for people and made necessities

more accessible. People can now get more items that they want because they are so easy to

produce now with the equipment that people have made. Technology is essential to human

society because it contributes to advancements in the field of medicine, has become the

“new normal”, and allows people to live lavish and easier lives.

As time passes, medical technology advances. This is a great attribute because with the

advancement of medical technology, many lives are being saved. Genome editing is a type of

medical technology that allows people to change the sequence of their DNA. This helps

eliminate deadly conditions that one can inherit. Genome editing is not only for saving lives, it

also allows people to look however they desire to look and to be happy with themselves. This is

why some people call it the “discovery of the century” (MacRae 2016). Body parts are being 3D

printed by creating tissue that can replace the natural organ. Some are 3D printed and do not

function but are used as models to prepare for operations that can be very difficult and require

precise cuts. Someday, “3D printing may in the future enable whole body parts to be artificially

created” (Heong Tung 2015). There is a robot that is a social companion, its called “Jibo” and it

has been proven that “smart technology has enabled these robots to be more human and

supplement or even substitute roles traditionally embodied by humans” (Heong Tung 2015). This

robot can read people's emotions and improve communication between family members. This

robot can help someone with a mental illness. It has many other features, like face recognition to

know who it is talking to. There are many major medical advancements that have changed how

the world is now. Some of the most drastic medical advancements are vaccines, antibiotics, birth

control, and many more. Vaccines and antibiotics play a huge role in population. It has lowered

the number of people that die from viruses or bacterial infections. As the graph shows, as

medical advancements are progressing, life expectancy in the United States is increasing. These

medical advancements are very important and “many people take for granted the technologies

and practices that, at one point or another, almost certainly saved their lives or the lives of people

they love.” (Childs, Dans, et al. 2007) Birth control has been a good way to reduce the

population because it reduces the chances of an unwanted baby. All of this technology are saving

many people’s lives on a daily basis.

Technology has shaped a new normal for everyone because of how accessible technology

has become over time and it has made so many task easier for people to do now rather than

before, like transportation, communication, and education. The internet has endless possibilities

because there is information on almost everything and people are allowed to learn with with very

little limits. Humans have become very attracted to technology because, “our lives will

inevitably be intertwined with smart technology, which will revolutionize the way that people

learn, eat and live.” (Heong Tung 2015). Transportation has been a very useful technology

advancement for people because it allows people to travel long distances in a short amount of

time and is convenient for every person. Navigation has been a very big accomplishment because

it allows people to know where they are going even when it is a completely brand new place to

them. Communication is an extremely important advancement in human life today because it

allows people to talk or

send messages instantly

without having to wait for

a long period of time for

someone to receive it and

then for them to respond.

instant and can be used for so many activities, even to talk to family. The internet is used in so

many ways to communicate, like social media and online messaging chats. Education has

improved for the better. It is now easy to obtain it and learn. Large amounts of informations can

be found and given to anyone. Information is all around people, it all depends how much they

want to explore it. A luxurious lifestyle can come from all the technology that is so common to

this day.

A lavish lifestyle is accomplishable for humans because technology allows us to make

items that everyone want and need faster and in a more efficient matter. The agricultural

technology has “resulted into the manufacturing of genetic crops which can grow fast and they

can be resistant to many pests and diseases” (Ramey 2013). Agriculture has advanced because

the amount of food that can be produced has increased. Before newer and more efficient

agricultural machinery, it was all done by hard manual labor. With faster production, people can

get what they need. Devices like cell phones and computers used to be very hard to attain. Now

cell phones are in almost every pocket and computers are in millions of households. “The

convergence of these developments means that robots are helping to increase overall output and

save money” (West 2016). Technology has become a source of entertainment. Examples are

television, video games and social media. People can now spend hours entertained using

technology. People are provided with these opportunities because technology is advancing and

people are getting utensils that will allow them to have some fun or entertain them. Most of these

objects are very hard to build but with the help of machinery most of these commodities are

made in assembly lines in seconds. Saving work has always been difficult because people would

have to put it on some type of memory, but that has switched because everything has now

become digital. Pictures are now digitally saved, music is now digitally streamed, and

information is saved on the internet. Now most devices use the internet and, “our Wifi (internet)

enabled gadgets have changed the way people work, play, and even raise our children” (Gebski

2017). With everything being on the internet, it provides us with a higher ability to advance

technologically.

Technology has become a necessity because humans see it as something that has been in

our lives forever, has brought out many new procedures in the medical field, and lets people live

a lifestyle they would truly enjoy. Medically, humans have reached new wonders that were not

expected to be reached. Humans are in a world of technology that is advancing rapidly and it is

our job to keep up with how fast everything is changing in front of our eyes. Technology is

important because it has caused a major impact on humans physically and mentally, and “by the

end of 19th century, the importance of technology had been firmly established and it was clear

that dependence on it would only grow” (Knowledgehut 2016). Society should care about how

the advancement of technology affects them because their lives depend on it, in the hospital,

behind the wheel, or even 39,000 feet up in the sky. Technology has not failed to impress us and

the advancements soon to come will knock everyone off of their feet.
