Developing & Directing Online Learning

1. What was the context (the course, purpose, situation, etc.) in which this artifact was
created?

For this course, we were tasked with creating an online learning module. I chose to
create a blended learning course for the K-5 classroom teachers at my building. We
have received some training on blended learning, but I wanted to create a course where
teachers were able to go at their own pace at their own comfort levels. Our district LMS
is Canvas so I chose to use a platform our teachers were already familiar with.

2. What outcome(s) (ISTE standards) were you demonstrating in creating it? For each
outcome, describe how the artifact addresses the indicators within the standard.

Standard 1 Learner: Educators continually improve their practice by learning from and
with others and exploring proven and promising practices that leverage technology to
improve student learning.
1a Set professional learning goals to explore and apply pedagogical approaches
made possible by technology and reflect on their effectiveness.
1b Pursue professional interests by creating and actively participating in local
and global learning networks.

My artifact for this course met these benchmarks because setting up an online course
with multiple modules allows me to use technology to apply pedagogical approaches.
Teachers are able to learn about blended learning asynchronously which allows them to
choose their path and go at their own pace. This artifact also clearly demonstrates the
second benchmark because teachers will be expected to use the discussion boards to
discuss with other professionals working their way through the course.
.
Standard 2 Leader: Educators seek out opportunities for leadership to support student
empowerment and success and to improve teaching and learning.
2a Shape, advance and accelerate a shared vision for empowered learning with
technology by engaging with education stakeholders.
2c Model for colleagues the identification, exploration, evaluation, curation, and
adoption of new digital resources and tools for learning.

These indicators were met because the purpose of the online module was to teach staff
how to incorporate blended learning into their content and classrooms. Doing this
demonstrates modeling how to use technology, but also requires collaboration with
colleagues to enhance their teaching through blended learning and the technology that
can be incorporated along with it. As teachers progress through these modules, leaders
will emerge who are able to model and extend how to use the Canvas LMS and blended
learning.

Standard 3 Citizen: Educators inspire students to positively contribute to and

responsibly participate in the digital world.
3a Create experiences for learners to make positive, socially responsible
contributions and exhibit empathetic behavior online that build relationships and
community.
3d Model and promote management of personal data and digital identity and
protect student data privacy.

This artifact demonstrates that teachers who use online learning tools are modeling and
using best practices when they are online. They must demonstrate how to make positive
comments and contributions to discussions, manage their personal information such as
passwords, and represent themselves online in a professional manner.

Standard 4 Collaborator: Educators dedicate time to collaborate with both colleagues

and students to improve practice, discover and share resources and ideas, and solve
problems.
4a Dedicate planning time to collaborate with colleagues to create authentic
learning experiences that leverage technology.
This benchmark was met because teachers were using an online platform to learn about
blended learning, allowing them to work with other educators to incorporate real-world
applications and authentic tasks to enhance student learning.

Standard 5 Designer: Educators design authentic, learner-driven activities and

environments that recognize and accommodate learner variability.
5a Use technology to create, adapt and personalize learning experiences that
foster independent learning and accommodate learner differences and needs.
5c Explore and apply instructional design principles to create innovative digital
learning environments that engage and support learning.

This artifact demonstrates this standard and benchmarks because the goal of blended
learning is to personalize learning for students. It allows students voice and choice
where they can choose their pace and which path to follow. As teachers complete the
modules, they will be able to design learning to adapt to the needs of their students. It
also allows teachers to use a digital learning environment of the learning management
system of canvas to complete tasks and demonstrate understanding. When teachers
are able to experience unique digital learning environments, they are then able to create
them for their students.

Standard 6 Facilitator: Educators facilitate learning with technology to support student

achievement of the ISTE Standards for Students.
6b Manage the use of technology and student learning strategies in digital
platforms, virtual environments, hands-on makerspaces or in the field.

These benchmarks were met because an online learning platform incorporates variety in
strategies of how students are able to learn. Teachers who complete the module will be
able to incorporate both blended learning and the Canvas LMS to vary learning
environments for students.

Standard 7 Analyst: Educators understand and use data to drive their instruction and
support students in achieving their learning goals.
7b Use technology to design and implement a variety of formative and
summative assessments that accommodate learner needs, provide timely
feedback to students and inform instruction.

This artifact represents this benchmark because teachers will complete assignments
throughout each module. As students submit their work, there is a rubric that allows for
timely and clear feedback. As students complete assignments in the modules, it will
allow the facilitator to modify, review, or reteach any concepts.

3. What challenge(s) did you encounter in creating this artifact? What did you learn from
encountering this/these challenge(s), and how can you turn these challenges into
opportunities in your current or future professional life?

One of the challenges in creating this artifact was that I was designing an online learning
course for my colleagues rather than my students. I am very comfortable and have a lot
of experience planning for students, but planning for educated adults can be challenging.
I learned that I need to keep in mind that my “students” would be at multiple levels of
understanding so the module was designed so that they could go at their own pace
rather than meeting face to face regularly. I will definitely use this in my future
professional life in designing PD. I know that teachers don’t always have a lot of time, so
giving them flexibility in how and when they complete modules would be most beneficial
for my staff.

4. What does this work show about you and your capabilities?

This work shows that I am capable of creating meaningful content for my colleagues to
help them learn and use teaching concepts they may be unfamiliar with. It also
demonstrates that I am able to use tools supported by our district. The Canvas LMS
was not my favorite tool, but it is the expectation of our district that we use it as a tool for
learning.

5. What did completing this work teach you about yourself as a 21st Century educator?
This work taught me that I think I could be successful in a mixed learning environment.
As a student in an online class and now having designed one, I think I could use that
experience to be successful at teaching an online course or incorporating some of the
online features in my own classroom.
