Cyber bullying Lesson 1

 “What is cyberbullying and how to defend against it?”
 What is bullying – ask the class.
 Write up def: Bullying is a repeated and intentional abuse of power, to cause harm.
o Around a quarter of yr. 4 to 9 students reported constant bullying. Important
topic
o 9 out of 10 youth have witnessed cyber bullying. This is why it’s important to
know what to do when you see it or experience it.
o Cyber bullying is the most rapidly increasing type of bullying.
 What is cyber bullying – ask the class.
 Write up def: Cyber bullying is using technology and the internet, to deliberately and
repeatedly harass, embarrass or threaten someone.
 What do we think some examples of this are?
 Examples: include a nasty text message or social media message, inappropriate
images sent via email, comments/rumours spread online, imitating or teasing others
online etc.
 Scenarios:
 1: A girl had her picture taken which made her feel uncomfortable. Later that week
her friends tell her that the picture has been posted on another student’s Facebook
page. What should the girl do? Should she fight back? DISCUSS
 2: A boy has written a poem for his crush and decides to send it to her in a private
message on Facebook. The girl then forwards it to all of her Facebook friends. The
next day at school all of the kids are making fun of him and his poem. What should
the boy do? DISCUSS
 3: A boy brought his cell phone to school one day and used the phone to take pictures
of other students in school. The next day the teacher sees that some of the students are
 threatening to beat up the boy. The teacher finds out that the pictures were posted on
the Web with funny captions under each. How should this situation be resolved?
 ASK THE CLASS TO TALK TO PERSON NEXT TO THEM:
 SO, what should they (we) do if they are a victim? Write it down.
o Report the problem immediately, don’t respond or retaliate to the message,
change privacy settings on social media to block the bully straight away, don’t
share private information with people you don’t know, keep a record of the
messages/inappropriate content, talk to someone you trust to gain further
assistance. (Techer/parent etc.)
 ASK THE CLASS:
 What can happen when social networking sites are used inappropriately? Write.
o Cyber bullying, identity theft, unwanted contact, exposure to illegal/unwanted
content, excessive compulsive behaviour.
 ASK THE CLASS TO TALK TO PERSON NEXT TO THEM:
 Ways to protect your privacy online: Write it down.
o Limit your friends list to the people you know, don’t share passwords unless
with a trusted adult, double check privacy settings, don’t use a webcam with
strangers, be careful when ‘checking-in’ at your location online,
 GENERAL RULES WHEN ONLINE/USING TECHNOLOGY: Write it down.
 Overall: treat others as you would like to be treated, don’t share content that may
upset/hurt someone, stand up and speak about bulling incidents, support others.
