TESTS PERFORMED ON BOWTHORPE SURGE ARRESTERS

ROUTINE TESTS
The following routine tests are carried out on all Bowthorpe surge arresters.

1) Leakage current at MCOV (Uc)

This test is not an IEC requirement. It is a Bowthorpe EMP internal test .On the rare occasion
that either a reference voltage and /or partial discharge test failure occurs, the result of this
test will give an indication of the cause of the failure.

2) Reference Voltage Test (I.E.C. 99-4, 1998 Clause 8.1.a)

The reference current for all Bowthorpe EMP arresters is 5.0 mA peak resistive. The voltage
measurement system is peak sensing and scaled in kV pk/ 2 units.

3) Partial Discharge (PD) I.E.C Clause 8.2c I.E.C Publ. 270

The test voltage is 1.05 x Uc. The voltage is raised to the rated voltage of the arrestor held for
4 to 10 seconds the lowered to 1.05 x Uc and partial discharge is measured
The applied test voltage is continuously monitored as results are obtained. The results are
displayed and stored to enable them to be printed on completion of the batch testing, or at
some later date.
Performing the test in the above order complies with the I.E.C. 60270 requirement, that the
voltage applied to the sample is raised to rated voltage and then lowered to 1.05 x Uc, before
partial discharge measurements are taken.
Failure of one or more of the above tests is displayed as a failure on the PC screen at the end
of the particular set of tests where failure occurred.
N.B. Occasionally, partial discharge test “failures” occur due to inadequate contacts between
the test object and the test equipment. In order to avoid rejecting “good” test material,
repeated tests are allowed on partial discharge failures.

(4) RESIDUAL VOLTAGE TEST

All resistors used to manufacture Bowthorpe EMP surge arresters are individually tested for
residual voltage by the manufacturer. The values obtained are then marked on each resistor.
Each batch of resistors delivered is then sampled and tested for reference voltage and
residual voltage.
In order to manufacture Bowthorpe EMP Surge Arresters it is necessary to have a tighter
residual voltage distribution than that supplied. Thus currently the resistors are sorted into
several, equal range, tighter groups.
Thus a measurement of power frequency reference voltage of each surge arrester unit
effectively controls the residual voltage of completed surge arresters.
This system is verified by regular measurements on completed surge arresters using the Marx
Generator facility of the High Voltage Laboratory. This system is also verified during the
frequent customer, consultant and end-user witnessed inspections that occur as a result of
being an export-orientated manufacturer.

(5) MECHANICAL INSPECTION

All Surge Arresters units and their component parts have been inspected to ensure
dimensional accuracy, correct labelling, workmanship and finish to the quality standards laid
down in the relevant internal quality standards as required by ISO 9001: 2001
