The Western Allies of World War II launched the largest amphibious invasion in history
when they assaulted Normandy, located on the northern coast of France, on 6 June 1944.
The invaders were able to establish a beachhead as part of Operation Overlord after a
successful "D-Day," the first day of the invasion.
Ellen Barry, at the U.S. war cemetery in France about 1920. Her son was my uncle
Joseph Barry who was killed there in WWI. He is on the war memorial at Hicksville
middle school and the
Knights of Columbus is named after him. She sailed there with other Gold Star mothers
after the war. I remember reading the entry in her diary when she learned of his death.
This is what Memorial Day really signifies. Appreciation, honor and often irreplaceable
loss. God bless America

Around Hicksville
Shari Hinden, Class of 1975, is enjoying a meal with classmate Arlene Giese on Friday,
April 26. It’s nice to share time with a good friend.
Congratulations Hicksville!
For the fourth consecutive year, the Hicksville School District has been honored with the
Best Communities for Music Education designation from The NAMM Foundation for its
outstanding commitment to music education.
Alexa Sheryll for recently being crowned Miss Empire State 2019 at the Miss New
York/New Jersey Pageant. A very bright and talented woman, Alexa will next represent
New York at the USA National Miss Scholarship in Disney World this summer. As part
of the recent competition, Alexa demonstrated her musical talent and commitment to
community service, including the advancement of important causes such as anti-bullying.
Some from the graduating class of 1961, from St. Ignatius 8th grade, had a mini-reunion
held May 6, 2019 at Broadway Diner, Hicksville while I was up from Florida.
In attendance were Mary Alice Sullivan, Maureen Farley, Cele Larkin, Pat Clancy, Joyce
Montalbano and Brenda Berkman. We'd love to plan a 60th reunion and would appreciate
help finding former classmates, some shown below in our 2nd grade class picture
as well as those in the other classes of our graduating group. If you are one of them, or
know of someone from the 1961 graduating class, please contact me with their name and
contact info THANKS!!!

I was given a private tour of the
USS New York recently.
The Captain of the ship found out I was a first responder at the world trade center attack
and he came to the bridge to say hello. During the tour we came into an area that had a
giant poster with all the names of the victims on it, as I walked towards it the first name I
saw was George Howard; I grew up around the block from the Howard family in
Hicksville and went to school with his sister Gerri Anne. It is nice to know that these
victims are being remembered in this special way.
NEVER FORGET!!!

We’re very proud of our son
Clinton Brown III, AKA CB3, (shown above with Sofia) in receiving this award from
CableFax magazine. Clinton has always brought awareness to disability and diversity
throughout his entire life. He teaches us every day about how much one can accomplish
when they’re focused on what’s important in life. Kudos CB3!!!
2019 The Work Culture List 2019 Winner for Employee Spirit Hero
Wall Street’s loss is cable’s gain. Altice USA revenue planning & analysis manager
Clinton Brown went to school for finance and banking and wanted to work in the
financial district. “Cable wasn’t even on my radar,” he says.
But after two summers commuting for internships from Long Island into Manhattan and
dealing with mass transit and accessibility problems, Brown, who has dwarfism and uses
a mobility device, started looking for work closer to home. He applied for a job 14 years
ago at what was then Cablevision, and though he could have had an inside connection, he
chose not to use it.
“My dad was a longtime Cablevision employee. I tried my best not to tell him until my
second interview. He was pretty surprised I had not said anything to him,” recalls Brown.
That’s indicative of the type of employee Brown embodies. He’s independent and always
up for a challenge, taking on risk management roles through the years in various
departments—from customer service to marketing to network management. For the last
four years, he’s been in revenue planning. And pretty much anyone who has met Brown
or worked with him will tell you he’s enthusiastic and a true ambassador for the
company.
That employee spirit led him to take on the role last year of leading employee resource
group Altice Access, which represents people with disabilities. It’s a role he takes
seriously, noting that recruitment of people within the company who identify with
disabilities can sometimes be hard. “The stigma in America for so long has been, ‘don’t
try to stand out. Don’t look like you could be a liability,’” he says. “I think we are trying
to rip the cover off that at Altice USA.” Of course, an Employee Spirit Hero can handle
the job. With Brown as Access’ leader, it has grown from about 10 people at its
formation to more than 50 today.
Altice’s emphasis on diversity and inclusion (it just received a perfect score on this year’s
Corporate Equality Index released by the HRC Foundation) gets Brown fired up. “It’s not
just on paper. It’s in meetings. It’s in the way our CEO and COO pay attention to you
when you’re across the boardroom table and you’re speaking about D&I efforts. When
people really care, you can tell,” he says.
Brown’s influence is being felt outside the walls of Altice as he serves as an advocate for
customers with disabilities. “We have 30 new walk-in centers… being built across the
country. Those 30 centers will be the interactions our customers have with us,” he says.
“I’m working with the architecture group and construction management group to ensure
complete accessibility. It’s amazing to get your foot in the door before projects are even
finished.”
Gleyber Torres, who plays with the N.Y. Yankees (shown above with CB3). What a
really nice guy, a good ballplayer and he’s 22.
Bob Sofia appearing on the 7000th show of Wheel of Fortune. Hicksville is proud of you.
GO COMETS!
Cheryl gries Brown
That’s fantastic. I always wondered if Bob was our “Comet”. We’re Dutch Lane alums.
Our Lady of Mercy (OLM) started in an old white barn on the corner of South Oyster
Bay Road and Old Country Road. My dad was an usher and worked hard as a member of
the Holy Name Society to raise money to build that church. I lived 50 yards from the
school that was a field I played in as a child…42 Andover Lane. I had a great time being
raised in Hicksville.
I was baptized in the barn. I also received First Communion and Confirmation. Then to
top off everything, I was married in 1971 at OLM and my two sons were baptized there,
too.
Joe…my dad was in the organ business back in the day and donated the first pipe-organ
that was played in the new church. It’s funny that we both live in Smithtown now.
Wow. Totally humbled by your experience and equally fascinated that you were able to
physically overcome that day in the manner you did. I’m thankful that you’ve been
around for the 50 years that followed.
I remember that day well. We lived a block over and my dad, a fireman, ran through
yards and jumped fences to get there. So glad you’re here because of Janetta, her family
and her neighbor. Heaven just wasn’t ready for you. We all were so worried and amazed
at your sheer strength to get through it all.
I remember I was coming home from getting bread at the A&P and I thought it would be
cool to follow a fire engine to see where it was going? Little did I know it was heading to
my house. I almost had a heart attack when it pulled into my driveway. There in the
backyard was Lori lying on the ground and Jan and the firemen. I remember, too, that
Lori was very upset that the firemen had to cut her Peddle Pusher pants because they
were brand new and her mom was gonna be mad. Thank God for all involved. Needless
to say, I have never followed a fire truck again!!!
Claudia Laundis
Wow I had no idea that happened to you. Murphy’s Law was on your side.
I have a bit of confession to make. I remember one time during a Junior High School gym
class, we were sitting in a line on the floor and you were right next to me. You stood up
and I noticed the scar on the back of your leg. I remember thinking, “Oh, WoW, what
happened to her”? Followed quickly by thinking whatever it was that happened, she must
be strong to have made it through and to be here. I guess it was the first time I realized
that the saying “Everyone has a story” is so, so true. Thank God for your friend, the
adults that were there that day, the doctors, and, of course, you, Lorin, for your strength.
I remember this and I remember you returning to Saturday morning choir rehearsal with
your hands still bandaged. God, for sure, was watching over you!!!

ever offered at AUC. Did I tell you he's amazing? John was part of a three day program,
May 15, 16, and 17 that featured three composers, Leonard Bernstein, Martin Sedek and
John.

Watching The PGA Championship at Bethpage Black brings back memories from when I
started working in 1944, at 13, as a caddie. I played Bethpage Black only once and that
was enough; tough course. My favorite to play was Bethpage Green. Hard to believe that
was 75 years ago. Retired 50 years later in from the U.S. Coast Guard Shipyard in
Baltimore. Where did all those years go?

Michele Sardi Borger 1974 & Annette Sardi Whidden 1979 were there, too!
Congratulations to Kristen Coakley!
I am so proud of all that you have accomplished. It’s not easy changing career paths, but
you persevered through courage, commitment and hard work. A career is what you do…
but a calling is who you are, and beyond a shadow of a doubt, you are called to be a
nurse. You make the world shine bright because of the beautiful light that you have
inside. Because of the love and care you show to others, lives are touched and changed.
Because of the generosity of your spirit, others feel hope! You have made my life and the
lives of everyone around you better. I am so excited to see what the future holds!

Thank you for the birthday card…
Thanks for the birthday card and for thinking of me. It was much appreciated. My most
memorable birthday was my 75th. My daughter and family surprised me with a delightful
dinner in Mount Dora. My brother and his wife were there and even though it was the last
birthday my beautiful granddaughter was alive to share it with me. The photos and
memories are embedded in my heart.
You are a light in my life. Thank you for your best birthday wishes and I hope to see you
very soon!!!
Both Ed and I turned 50 in 1993 and we threw ourselves a big “100th” Birthday Bash. All
our family and friends were there. My friends still remember the friend with the “Butt”
crack. His pants were low.

Thank you for the birthday card, and for thinking of me. It was much appreciated.
Thanks so much for the birthday card. At our age, that fire extinguisher in the card
comes in handy. Thanks also for the wonderful job you that all of you do at
HixNews. Sincerely.

Thank you so much for our Anniversary Greeting. John and I are married 54 years. Can
hardly believe all this time has gone by. Lately, we have been doing a lot of cruising and
I related this to our Travel Agent friend, "On our sailings thru life, we haven't always had
a balcony, nor calm seas, but through it all, we always managed to hold on to each other,
and that brings us to the place we are now." Thanks again,
Happy Anniversary Connie and Norman Shein (1964). Love you and love your cake.
May 15, 2019…Happy anniversary to my beautiful wife, Angie. Thank you for the best
years I have ever known…love you!!!!

Flashback
I found my first grade reader
Eileen Ofenloch, class of 1974 with husband Bob and their son graduating from the
police academy and joining the Nassau County Police Department
when Mary O’Shaughnessy (1961) and husband Tom Cleary celebrated St. Patrick’s Day
with friends.
Crowning of Mary? It was done outdoors near the Convent with the statue of the Blessed
Mother. We had to kneel in that asphalt parking lot. Ugh, the pain. Well they now have
the crowning inside the church.
Cheryl Gries Brown
The Coronation of the Blessed Virgin Mary is the fifth of the Glorious Mysteries of the
Rosary (following the Assumption, the fourth Glorious Mystery) and therefore the idea
that the Virgin Mother of God was physically crowned as Queen of Heaven after her
Assumption is a traditional Catholic belief echoed in the Rosary.

I went to a frozen custard place named Lickety Split in Chicago today. I had vanilla
custard with chocolate sauce. Brought back many fond memories of that delicious

Some Thoughts for Teacher Appreciation Week, May 5 – May 11, 2019
About Teacher Appreciation Week; since 1984, National PTA has designated one week
in May as a special time to honor the men and women who lend their passion and skills to
educating our children. PTA events at the national, state and local levels celebrate the
outstanding contributions teachers make.
If I Taught You, I'd love for my former students and parents to reply to this post and tell
me how you are doing and what you are doing; school, job, career, family, etcetera???
Even if you know that I know all about it - I want to hear from you! Thank you!!!
You had Bryce in 5th grade and this year he’s graduating! That year was a great class and
we thank you.
My favorite neighbor, first grade teacher and friend. Loved you then and still do.
Shannon-Kate Kelley was your student. She is about to graduate Fredonia and she is the
disciplined responsible student today because of you. She has made the Dean’s list every
semester since she began 4 years ago. She works hard, so she deserves it. But I thank you
also...
Lucille Kelley Shannon
Lucille Kelley My pleasure. I wish her all the best. She helped me to be a better teacher/
Christine
Thank you so much for being a fantastic teacher! I will think of you while I “student

Mary always showed her presence and great intelligence. She stood a head above most
others... I enjoyed having her in my class and I continue to be impressed by her
accomplishments. Please keep me in the loop!

Deborah Letscher (Dingman), who graduated from HHS in 1974, the mother of my
children, passed away April 25th, 2019 after a bout with cancer. She was living in
Albuquerque, NM with her husband Pat. Although we were divorced for many years, we
were, and always will be, connected through our sons, Matt and Mark. She fought hard
till the end. RIP Deb…

our hearts were broken but you were failing and couldn’t hold on any longer. You lived a
good life and did everything you could for mommy, Jimmy and me. We’ll always think

are I don’t know about Jimbo. We love you & miss you very much. Please hug everyone
up there with you as we miss them too.
