What was the invasion of Normandy?

The Western Allies of World War II launched the largest amphibious invasion in history
when they assaulted Normandy, located on the northern coast of France, on 6 June 1944.
The invaders were able to establish a beachhead as part of Operation Overlord after a
successful "D-Day," the first day of the invasion.

How many Allied troops invaded Normandy?

The Normandy Invasion consisted of 5,333 Allied ships and landing craft embarking
nearly 175,000 men. The British and Canadians put 75,215 troops ashore, and the
Americans 57,500, for a total of 132,715, of who about 3,400 were killed or missing, in
contrast to some estimates of ten thousand.

How many Americans died on Normandy Beach?

The landings took place along a 50-mile (80 km) stretch of the Normandy coast divided
into five sectors: Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword. Approximately 10,000 allies were
injured or killed - 6,603 American, of which 2,499 were fatal, 2,700 UK soldiers and
1,074 Canadians, of which 359 fatal.
My great grandmother

Ellen Barry, at the U.S. war cemetery in France about 1920. Her son was my uncle

Joseph Barry who was killed there in WWI. He is on the war memorial at Hicksville
middle school and the
Knights of Columbus is named after him. She sailed there with other Gold Star mothers
after the war. I remember reading the entry in her diary when she learned of his death.
This is what Memorial Day really signifies. Appreciation, honor and often irreplaceable
loss. God bless America

September, 2, 1945…Japanese Surrender, World War II

This film is believed to have never been seen before, only shots of the surrender were
known. General McArthur's voice is a rarity in these old film clips. This is a 'must see' for
the WWII history buff or anyone interested in history. This is an actual film made of the
surrender ceremony of the Japanese to McArthur in Tokyo Bay in September 1945.

Some from the graduating class of 1961, from St. Ignatius 8th grade, had a mini-reunion
held May 6, 2019 at Broadway Diner, Hicksville while I was up from Florida.

In attendance were Mary Alice Sullivan, Maureen Farley, Cele Larkin, Pat Clancy, Joyce
Montalbano and Brenda Berkman. We'd love to plan a 60th reunion and would appreciate
help finding former classmates, some shown below in our 2nd grade class picture

as well as those in the other classes of our graduating group. If you are one of them, or
know of someone from the 1961 graduating class, please contact me with their name and

I was given a private tour of the
USS New York recently.

The Captain of the ship found out I was a first responder at the world trade center attack
and he came to the bridge to say hello. During the tour we came into an area that had a
giant poster with all the names of the victims on it, as I walked towards it the first name I

saw was George Howard; I grew up around the block from the Howard family in
Hicksville and went to school with his sister Gerri Anne. It is nice to know that these
victims are being remembered in this special way.

We’re very proud of our son

Clinton Brown III, AKA CB3, (shown above with Sofia) in receiving this award from
CableFax magazine. Clinton has always brought awareness to disability and diversity
throughout his entire life. He teaches us every day about how much one can accomplish
when they’re focused on what’s important in life. Kudos CB3!!!

Cheryl Gries Brown & Clinton Brown

2019 The Work Culture List 2019 Winner for Employee Spirit Hero
Wall Street’s loss is cable’s gain. Altice USA revenue planning & analysis manager
Clinton Brown went to school for finance and banking and wanted to work in the
financial district. “Cable wasn’t even on my radar,” he says.
But after two summers commuting for internships from Long Island into Manhattan and
dealing with mass transit and accessibility problems, Brown, who has dwarfism and uses
a mobility device, started looking for work closer to home. He applied for a job 14 years
ago at what was then Cablevision, and though he could have had an inside connection, he
chose not to use it.
“My dad was a longtime Cablevision employee. I tried my best not to tell him until my
second interview. He was pretty surprised I had not said anything to him,” recalls Brown.
That’s indicative of the type of employee Brown embodies. He’s independent and always
up for a challenge, taking on risk management roles through the years in various
departments—from customer service to marketing to network management. For the last
four years, he’s been in revenue planning. And pretty much anyone who has met Brown
or worked with him will tell you he’s enthusiastic and a true ambassador for the
company.

That employee spirit led him to take on the role last year of leading employee resource
group Altice Access, which represents people with disabilities. It’s a role he takes
seriously, noting that recruitment of people within the company who identify with
disabilities can sometimes be hard. “The stigma in America for so long has been, ‘don’t
try to stand out. Don’t look like you could be a liability,’” he says. “I think we are trying
to rip the cover off that at Altice USA.” Of course, an Employee Spirit Hero can handle
the job. With Brown as Access’ leader, it has grown from about 10 people at its
formation to more than 50 today.

Altice’s emphasis on diversity and inclusion (it just received a perfect score on this year’s
Corporate Equality Index released by the HRC Foundation) gets Brown fired up. “It’s not
just on paper. It’s in meetings. It’s in the way our CEO and COO pay attention to you
when you’re across the boardroom table and you’re speaking about D&I efforts. When
people really care, you can tell,” he says.

Brown’s influence is being felt outside the walls of Altice as he serves as an advocate for
customers with disabilities. “We have 30 new walk-in centers… being built across the
country. Those 30 centers will be the interactions our customers have with us,” he says.
“I’m working with the architecture group and construction management group to ensure
complete accessibility. It’s amazing to get your foot in the door before projects are even
finished.”

“Clint’s relentless positivity in everything he does at Altice USA is contagious and it

deserves to be celebrated," says Colleen Schmidt, Altice's EVP, and HR. He is someone
that makes a true difference in the lives of everyone he works closely with here at the
company, and he is a standout advocate on our behalf with many aspects of our local and
regional community. He is a great example of what Altice USA strives for, and we are a
better company because Clint is a part of our team.” -Amy Maclean

Congratulations to those who were confirmed at

Our Lady of Mercy church in Hicksville on May 16, 2019.

Our Lady of Mercy (OLM) started in an old white barn on the corner of South Oyster
Bay Road and Old Country Road. My dad was an usher and worked hard as a member of
the Holy Name Society to raise money to build that church. I lived 50 yards from the
school that was a field I played in as a child…42 Andover Lane. I had a great time being
raised in Hicksville.

Joe DiMora 1970

That little barn was where I went to church. Things were so great n Hicksville back
then!!!

Connie Casella Shein 1964

I was baptized in the barn. I also received First Communion and Confirmation. Then to
top off everything, I was married in 1971 at OLM and my two sons were baptized there,
too.

Kathleen Quinn Gorlitz 1972

Joe…my dad was in the organ business back in the day and donated the first pipe-organ
that was played in the new church. It’s funny that we both live in Smithtown now.

Hi Friends…I have just finished uploading all my original compositions to

SheetMusicPlus for worldwide distribution. This is a great platform as for each piece you
can view the first few pages of the sheet music, listen to an audio sample, and in most
cases, view a live performance of the piece via a YouTube link. All pieces are available
for instant download in PDF format for the sheet music and MP3 format for audio
recordings. I have a “Publisher Page” where all my compositions are shown. You can
even search within my page, for specific titles or categories of music. My compositions
include guitar solos, duets, trios and larger ensembles; guitar duets with flute, oboe,
violin, recorder and voice; guitar with string quartet and choir; a concerto for guitar with
string orchestra; piano solos, a suite for string quartet and several pieces for recorder
ensemble. As many of my compositions have several different versions/instrumentations,
I have over 150 titles available.

Jim Bosse 1967 (shown above with Nancy)

50 years ago today, May 10th, 1969, while playing at a friend's house, I climbed a tree,
high enough to grab hold of a high tension wire. The electricity entered my hand, traveled
through my body, and exited several places on my legs and feet. I fell 20 feet out of the
tree, landed on the ground, unconscious and not breathing. I am only here today because
of the quick thinking of my friend, her father, and the next door neighbor.
Today, I reflect back over the past 50 years of my life and that which is most important. I
love my husband, my kids, and my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. I have been blessed
with a wonderful family and amazing friends. I love my church and my church family, I
love my dogs... the ones I've had, the ones I now have, and the ones I will have... (Did I
mention how much I love my husband?) 50 years has been a lifetime that has gone by in
the blink of an eye. It seems like only yesterday…that Saturday morning, after choir
practice, I went to my friend's house

Janetta Astone Twerell…forever be my hero!!

Lorin O’Neill Coakley 1977

I remember the near tragedy and I’m so glad you’re here for your family and friends.

Tony Pisano 1975

Wow. Totally humbled by your experience and equally fascinated that you were able to
physically overcome that day in the manner you did. I’m thankful that you’ve been
around for the 50 years that followed.

Vin Fallacara 1977

I remember that day well. We lived a block over and my dad, a fireman, ran through
yards and jumped fences to get there. So glad you’re here because of Janetta, her family
and her neighbor. Heaven just wasn’t ready for you. We all were so worried and amazed
at your sheer strength to get through it all.

Donna Carter Lafferty 1977

I’m glad you survived and it was because God had a plan for you and I’m so thankful that
one of the lives “He” meant for you to touch was mine. Your sense of humor is your gift
to me and laughing with you remains the predominant memory of our high school years.
Love you, Lori.

Nancy Harman Stevens 1977

I remember I was coming home from getting bread at the A&P and I thought it would be
cool to follow a fire engine to see where it was going? Little did I know it was heading to
my house. I almost had a heart attack when it pulled into my driveway. There in the
backyard was Lori lying on the ground and Jan and the firemen. I remember, too, that
Lori was very upset that the firemen had to cut her Peddle Pusher pants because they
were brand new and her mom was gonna be mad. Thank God for all involved. Needless
to say, I have never followed a fire truck again!!!

Claudia Laundis
Wow I had no idea that happened to you. Murphy’s Law was on your side.

William Bill Schwartz 1977

I have a bit of confession to make. I remember one time during a Junior High School gym
class, we were sitting in a line on the floor and you were right next to me. You stood up
and I noticed the scar on the back of your leg. I remember thinking, “Oh, WoW, what
happened to her”? Followed quickly by thinking whatever it was that happened, she must
be strong to have made it through and to be here. I guess it was the first time I realized
that the saying “Everyone has a story” is so, so true. Thank God for your friend, the
adults that were there that day, the doctors, and, of course, you, Lorin, for your strength.

Dolores Oehler Garger 1977

I remember this and I remember you returning to Saturday morning choir rehearsal with
your hands still bandaged. God, for sure, was watching over you!!!
Donna Crispell Broberg, 1979, Levittown Memorial High School

You have been a highly charged individual since then!!!

My Most Memorable Birthday

It was a very hot, muggy Sunday In July and it was my 40th Birthday. My Husband,
Claude and my Sons were taking me out to dinner that night to celebrate. However, this
birthday became bittersweet. That morning my best friend’s husband passed away from
an aneurysm and he was only 52. We were all in shock. Had been feeling fine when he
woke that day and it happened so fast.
In the afternoon, I went out to shear the privet hedges across the front of the house -
just wanted to clear my head and try and digest what happened earlier in the day.
Neighbors of mine, from down the road, stopped by and told me to get out of the heat.
This neighbor owned the funeral home in town and knew I was upset. He and his wife
were all dressed up and told me they were going out for an early dinner. They said
"Goodbye and Have a Happy Birthday if I could". Funny, I thought, how did they know
it was my birthday?
At 6:00PM my Husband came out and said my Sons were getting upset as they wanted to
take me out to dinner. So, I went in, took a shower and off we went.
When we entered the restaurant, 52 people yelled "Surprise". Here were friends and
family from Long Island, many in their 70's and 80's and they had been waiting since
4:00 for us to show up. Here it was almost 7:00 and the restaurant had continued
providing drinks and hors d'oeuvres. As a result, dinner was served later than expected,
the combo played longer than expected and the photographer my husband hired stayed
on. Oh yes, my neighbor and his wife from the down the road were there as well.
I guess I am not meant to have surprise parties. The photo below was taken that day of
Claude and me.

For those who went to St. Ignatius School. Who remembers the

Crowning of Mary? It was done outdoors near the Convent with the statue of the Blessed
Mother. We had to kneel in that asphalt parking lot. Ugh, the pain. Well they now have
the crowning inside the church.
Cheryl Gries Brown

What was the crowning all about???

Mike Hoda

The Coronation of the Blessed Virgin Mary is the fifth of the Glorious Mysteries of the
Rosary (following the Assumption, the fourth Glorious Mystery) and therefore the idea
that the Virgin Mother of God was physically crowned as Queen of Heaven after her
Assumption is a traditional Catholic belief echoed in the Rosary.

About Teacher Appreciation Week; since 1984, National PTA has designated one week
in May as a special time to honor the men and women who lend their passion and skills to
educating our children. PTA events at the national, state and local levels celebrate the
outstanding contributions teachers make.

It’s with a broken heart that I have to tell you that my husband Jimmy died this
afternoon. I am heartbroken beyond words.

It’s with great sadness that I post this.

Deborah Letscher (Dingman), who graduated from HHS in 1974, the mother of my
children, passed away April 25th, 2019 after a bout with cancer. She was living in
Albuquerque, NM with her husband Pat. Although we were divorced for many years, we
were, and always will be, connected through our sons, Matt and Mark. She fought hard
till the end. RIP Deb…

Deborah passed away during the early morning hours. She suffered greatly and fought a
long and hard battle with cancer. A sweetheart of a woman and friend always supported
everyone around her. She loved her family very much, and hung on the best she could for
them. Condolences to her family. Rest in sweet peace my beautiful friend.

When you left us 6 years ago dad, April 27, 2013

our hearts were broken but you were failing and couldn’t hold on any longer. You lived a
good life and did everything you could for mommy, Jimmy and me. We’ll always think
of the great memories you left us with. Jimmy and you are in the heavenly garage fixing
some kind of motor together and listening to Engelbert Humperdinck, well at least you
are I don’t know about Jimbo. We love you & miss you very much. Please hug everyone
up there with you as we miss them too.
Cheryl Gries Brown 1972

Wishing my wonderful husband, Tony, in heaven, a very Happy 57th Anniversary (May
5th, 1962). Miss you every minute of every day. I know you would be so proud of our
little family. Your influence helped make them the special people they are. So still love
you are my warrior.

An Awesome Magic Trick

Prepare to be amazed as you watch Magician and Illusionist Simon Coronel perform
what appears to be a really simple act but one that ultimately left Penn and Teller fooled
in the end. This trick is usually done using coins and it’s much more difficult to
perform using different colored chips. Simon is from Melbourne, Australia and
without a doubt he is one of the best illusionists I’ve ever seen as his sleight of hand
skills are amazing.

The drunk was walking by this house in Revda, Sverdlovsk Oblast, Russia at 5 AM
when the dog came out to investigate. This idiot probably woke the entire
neighborhood up when he set the car alarm off. Thankfully it looks like the dog was
OK and the drunk man got the worst of this encounter.

Arat Montoya might just be the happiest man in the world as he gets to drive the
doggie school bus. He has five acres for the dogs to run and play on while they are at
his doggie daycare. If I lived near him I would gladly pay to utilize his service for
my dogs.
